Oneofthebestaspectsofbelongingtoacommunityoflike-mindedstitchers(thinkguild,bee,smallgroup,orotherregularcongregationofthoseyouhavesomethingincommonwith),whetheronlineorinrealtime,ishavingtheopportunitytoshareyourtalentsandcreativity.Swapsprovideafun,give-and-takeformatthatallowsforthesharingoftalentinatangibleway.Asidebenefitthathasmadethemsopopularisthefriendshipsandbondsthatdevelopamongparticipants,evenacrossfiber-opticlines.
Swapsareorganizedaroundathemeandasetofrules.Inaswap,eachparticipantisbothagiverandareceiveroftheswap’sproject.Usually,theparticipantsonlyknowtowhomtheyaregivingtheirfinishedproject,buttherearenohardrulesforthis.It’satthereveal,whentheprojectsareexchanged,thatthemysteryissolved.
Whatsetsthisapartfromachallengeistheexchangepart.Withchallengesyougenerallykeepwhatyoumake;swappingprovidesachallenge,plusthejoyofgiftmaking,giving,andreceiving.Thecorepurposeofparticipatinginaswapeventistohavefun.It’sasewinggame!
Andthat’swhysomanyvariedthemesandwaystoplayarepartoftheswapprocess.Thethemeofaswapcanbejustaboutanythingthatyoucanimagine—asinglefabric,afabriccollection,acolor,aholiday,aroom,andsoon.Aswapcanbearoundatechnique(mayberaw-edgeappliqué)oranitem(suchaspincushionsordollquilts).Theitemmightneedtohaveapurpose(storage)orbespecifictoaroom(kitchen).Youcanevencombinethemes—whateverfloatsyourgroup’sboat.Thereisnoendtowhy,how,andwhatistradedamongplayers.
Everyotherreason—creativeexploration,camaraderie,showcasingtalentornewtechniques—isirrelevantifyouandyourgrouplosesightofthefunfactor.That’sright.It’sallaboutthefun,people.
Onemajorthingtoknowaboutswapsisthatusuallytheprojectsaresmallandeasy.Inouropinion,ifyoucan’tcompleteyourswapprojectinlessthanaday(exceptifyou’reanewbiestitcherortryinganewtechnique),thentheswapisgoingtoinflictstressinsteadofbringingjoy,andthat’snotgood.Smallprojectsmeansmallpiecesoffabrics;precutsorscrapsaregreat.

Anytypeofsewing/quiltingchallengeshouldstretchyourcreativemuscles.Afterall,you’regivenaprescribedsetofrulestofollow,andinalllikelihood,youwouldn’thaverules—nottheserulesatleast—determininghowtospendyoursewingtime.

Withthisinmind,aswapcanbeorganizedwithasfewasthreepeopleorasmanyasyouhavethebraincellstocoordinate.Wethinkacomfortablenumberforafirst-timeendeavorisabouttwentypeople.That’senoughbodiestohavesomereallyfunthingsmadefortheswap,andenoughpeoplethatyoucanturntoanotherparticipantifsomeonedropsout.(Moreonthislater.)Also,twentypeoplearenottoodifficulttokeeptrackof.Butremember:You’renottheirmommyordaddy;you’rejustthefacilitator.
It’snotjustbiggirlsandboyswholikeswapping!Ifyouhappentohaveanykidsinyourgroup,area4-HorScoutleader,orhaveayoungguildwithlittleonesaround,theyouthcoulddotheirownswap.Oryoucoulddoanadult-childswap.Projectsinthisbookthatwouldbeparticularlyaptforthat:potholders,eyepillows,pincushions,themonster(ofcourse),andthedollquiltsandpillow.

Youcaneventaketwoormoreoftheseandgroupthemtogetherinaswap.Forexample,weknowofaguildthatusedpaintchipstoorganizeachallenge.Eachparticipantdrewtwochipsandwasallowedtoaddonemorecolortothemix.Thentheycreatedasmallquiltfromthecolors.Youcouldeasilyadaptthisideatoaswap.
Anotherguildwe’reinvolvedwithhadeachparticipantgiveafatquarteroffabricandanotesayingwhatkindofsmallsewnitemtheywanted(pillow,bag,placemats).Thepersondrawingthename/fabricthenusedtheir“swapee’s”fabricinthatfinishedproduct.The“what”oftheprojectwasopentotherecipient’sdesire,andthedesireditemandprovidedfabricdirectedthepersonmakingit.(Afewpeopleinthisswapsaidtheydidn’tcarewhattheyreceivedaslongasthefabricwasused.)
Pillowsareagreatswapthemebecausetheyaresmall,offerablankslate,andareusedbymanypeople.HeatherBostic’sPillowPop,publishedbyStashBooks,isagreatplacetofindpillowpatterns.
STYLES• SwapscanbeorganizedlikeSecretSanta,wheretheparticipantsarerandomlygivensomeoneinthegrouptosewfor.
• InaLeapfrogSwap,usuallythepersonwhowillreceivetheswapprojectisnotthesamepersonwhowillmakeaprojectforthegiver.Thisismorelikeachain:SwapperAgivestoSwapperB.SwapperBgivestoSwapperC.Andsoon.
• Peoplecouldbepartnered,sotheymakesomethingforeachother.
• AYankee-StyleSwapisalsoagreatwaytomaketheexchanges.UnlikeatraditionalSecretSanta–typegame,youdon’tknowwhoyouaremakingyourgiftfor;itcouldgotoanyone.Youpickgiftsoneatatimeandblindly—atleastinperson—andthenthenextpersonchoosesanunknowngiftor“steals”aknowngift.Oneofthethingsthatmakesthisworksowellisthatpeopletrytocreatethemostwonderful,most-likely-to-be-stolengift.

ExceptforYankee-Style,it’suptothegrouptodetermineifparticipantsknowwhoissewingforthem.Oftenidentitiesarekeptsecretuntilthereveal.
Speakingofthereveal,wethinkthisisthesecond-bestpart(nexttogettingthehandmadeitems,natch).Thisiswheneveryonelearnswhotheyhavebeenplayingwith.Itcanbealotoffuntohavesecretsinaswapuntiltheend,muchlikehavingasecretadmirer.Butatleastoneperson—usuallytheorganizer—alwaysneedstoknowwhoispartneredwithwhom.Thatway,ifsomeonedropsoutorcan’tparticipateinthereveal,thentheorganizercanstepinanddirectthingsappropriatelysonoonefeelsslighted.

KeepItSimple:Offeraprojectthatcanbemaderelativelyquickly,assumingyourplayersallhaveintermediatesewing/quiltingskills.Iftheswapprojectwilltakeweeksormonthstocomplete,you’llprobablyhaveaverylimitedpoolofparticipants.
Supplies:Alloftheseprojectsweredevelopedwiththeassumptionthatthereaderhasbasicsewing/quiltingknowledgeaswellasbasictools—pinsandneedles,rotarycutterandmat,scissorsforfabricandpaper,measuringandmarkingtools—athand.Anythingnotbasicwe’velistedintheproject’smaterialsandsupplieslist.
Ifyouareworkingaroundasetproduct,fabric,ortoolthathasbeensuppliedbytheswap,makesurethereareextrasforemergenciesorsurprises.Forexample,ifyourswaprevolvesaroundaspecificcharmpackoffabricandtheswaporganizerisdisbursingthosetoparticipants,haveatleastafewextrapacks.Peoplelosethings.Carsgetstolen.Foodgetsspilledinsewingrooms.Youjustneverknow.
Itisperfectlyacceptabletoaskparticipantstocontributetothecostofanybulkmaterialsyou’re
acquiringfortheswap(suchascharmsquarepacks),butyouneedtorespectyourparticipants’walletsandoutlinethepotentialcostbeforehand.Ifyourgroupisresistant,plentyofswapideasworkaroundfoundobjectsorhavingeachparticipantthrowsomethingintothemix(fatquarters,ribbons,theirownscraps).Themostimportantthinghereisthecommunication.Claritywillcurepotentialproblems.

1.Usingadesignwallorlargeflatarea(youcanspreadalargepieceofflannelonadiningtableandthenholditup),arrangethewhitestripsinapleasingarrangementsothatprintsandvaluesaredistributedevenly.
2.Addaccentpiecesontopofthestrips,balancingthecolordistribution.Staggertheplacementoftheaccentpiecesbypositioningthemoneithersideofthecenterinapleasing,randomorder.
3.Gentlyfoldtheaccentpiecesinhalfinordertomarkwheretocutthebackgroundstrips.Cutthebackgroundstrips,andsewtheaccentpiecesbetweenthe2ends.Presstheseamstowardtheaccentfabrics.
4.Whenallaresewn,repositionthestripsinthecorrectorderonthedesignwall.
TipTakeaquickpictureofthearrangementbeforesewingsoyoucanrememberwhatyoudid.
5.Bastethebackingandbattingtogether.6.Positionthefirstpiecedstrip,rightsideup,about1˝fromthetopedgeofthebacking/battingsandwich,makingsurethestripisparalleltothetopedge.Sewalongthetopedgetosecureittothebattingandbacking.
7.Positionthenextstrip,rightsidedown,overthefirststripandataslightangle.Pinitinplace.Sewalongtheedgeofthesecondstrip.
8.Trimawaytheexcessfabricfromeachseam,andpressthestripwellsoitliesflatbeforeattachingthenextstrip.Thisisimportant,oryoumightendupwithabubblethatcan’tbe
flattened.
9.Continueaddingstrips.
NOTES►Asyouaddstrips,makesurethestripslineupalonganedgeasevenlyaspossible.Becauseyou’resewingeachstripatanangle,theentirepiececanstarttoskewifyouarenotwatchingforit.
