Alex’s Story After serving 6 years in the U.S. Army as a cannon crew member Alex found himself in a series of dead-end jobs. He knew he wanted to work in the area of social services, specifically assisting veterans, but was not sure how to make that career a reality. When Alex connected with Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program he received the assistance needed to get on the path for a solid job.

Job Success Alex is now a Peer Support Specialist with a USC program for veterans. In fact, USC waived the bachelor’s degree requirement to hire him based on his prior experience, thanks to Easterseals advocating on his behalf. Alex is also a student at a local Cal State University and is working to get his bachelor’s degree in Human Services.

Caleb’s Story Caleb served over 12 years in the U.S. Navy where he worked as a hospital corpsman in combat providing medical assistance to U.S. Marines. After being injured and medically discharged, Caleb found it hard to get work and became discouraged.

Job Success Caleb is now a certified mixologist working at a bar and taking training in responsible beverage service with the goal of becoming a bar manager while he attends community college.

“Easterseals helped me a lot. I think Easterseals is really important to veterans transitioning out of the military to the civilian sector because of the wealth of resources and the experience and knowledge all the staff have. They work together to make sure the veteran gets what they need.”

Desma’s Story Desma served over 14 years in the U.S. Navy as a Logistics Specialist managing areas such as supply, finance, accounting and budgeting while achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer and leading a team of 65 sailors. After retiring from the Navy, Desma had no confidence in finding work as a civilian. She came across the Easterseals Bob Hope Support Program when searching for resources.

Job Success Desma now works as a civilian in asset management for the U.S. Navy.

I look back at my original resume and can’t imagine how I devalued the experience I had to offer a company. Bryant’s Story Bryant served 9 years in the U.S. Marine Corps in the infantry and as a training instructor. After transitioning out of the military Bryant thought about pursuing a career in psychology but decided he’d like a career in which he would be able to help other veterans. Bryant was referred to Easterseals Bob Hope Veteran Support Program by a fellow veteran.

Job Success Bryant is now a full time student working on his master’s degree in Marriage and Family therapy while also volunteering in the local community.

“After exiting the Marine Corps, I lacked direction and a plan for my future. Easterseals helped me develop a solid plan that is leading me towards a master’s degree and a fulfi lling career helping other veterans.”

La Shawn’s Story La Shawn retired from the U.S. Navy as a Religious Program Specialist after 26 years of service. During her time in the military she received two degrees—an MBA and a master’s in Healthcare Administration. With her level of education she thought she would quickly fi nd civilian employment, but it was not the case. As she struggled to fi nd a job, La Shawn was connected with Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program.

Job Success La Shawn now works as a Clinic Manager at a health and dental center and also serves as an adjunct professor in healthcare administration at a private college in San Diego.

“Easterseals’ professional mentorship opened the door to jobs I didn’t even know existed or be able to obtain on my own. I am very grateful for the work they’ve done and continue to do to encourage me in my career.”

Easterseals Bob Hope Veterans Support Program provides one-on-one assistance to help veterans transition out of the military to civilian work. We help veterans determine employment goals, create resumes, build interview skills and network to get a “foot-in-the door” with employers.
