ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE LAST DAY OF TERM

Last day of this term is tomorrow Friday 12 April. Students are dismissed at

12 noon. Please note that our Canteen will be closed on the last day of term.

We encourage parents to provide children’s recess (and lunch if children stay

on).

Remember that students are dismissed at 12 noon unless staying for a

modified program until 2.10pm. A completed early dismissal form to confirm

arrangements for their children must be returned to class teachers.

Kids’ Zone will be open from 2.10pm. Bookings are essential.

CASUAL DAY – FRIDAY 12 APRIL

Please remember that tomorrow is a casual day to celebrate the end of term.

Please send a gold coin to school with your child. All donations will be going

to Downs SA to support people with Down Syndrome. Thank you for

supporting this very worthy organisation.

YEAR 6/7 ORIGIN ENERGY WORKSHOPS

Origin Energy has a foundation that has partnered with Solar Buddy, an

Australian charity working to improve the educational opportunities of

children throughout the South Pacific, South East Asia and Africa, by

distributing portable solar lights. Each of the Year 6/7 classes have worked

with a group of volunteers from Origin to learn more about the programme.

On Tuesday, volunteers from Origin came to talk to FR3 about solar buddies.

Solar buddies is a program to provide light to the people in Papua New

Guinea. Most families there don’t have light when the sun goes down in PNG.

This light helps kids like us study and do homework. We got to assemble the

lights then write a letter to the new owner of it. We also learnt what it was

like without lights by covering our eyes for one minute. Most people believed

that having no lights was boring and dull. “I felt very lonely and sad”, “It was

quiet and felt like you were

alone.” These are some of our

opinions on how the darkness

felt. Hopefully with the lights,

the kids in Papua New Guinea

will be able to study better

ROAD SAFETY MESSAGE TO DRIVERS

Road safety around schools is everyone’s

responsibility. All drivers need to look out for

children, many of whom will be walking or

cycling to school. We ask all motorists to be extra

vigilant when driving past or near our school

making sure to observe the lower speed limits

and be watchful of children walking or cycling to

school. We want to ensure that our children

make their way to/from school safely.

STUDENT MEDICATION

It is a Department for Education requirement that we have a

current Health Care Plan for all students at our school who

need individual health care and support. All Medication

Agreements must be reviewed every 12 months. Please ensure

your child’s is up to date.

In cases where medication must be taken during the day, the

following procedures apply:

• All medications, including those purchased over the

counter, must be sent with a Medication Agreement and

a Health Care Plan. They must be in the original container

with a chemist label detailing the child’s name and dose.

• Medication is stored in the Health Centre

If your child has a medical issue that the school is not aware of,

please contact Student Services for further information.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN

F5 are collecting the Earn and Learn stickers that Woolworths

will be doing again in May. We would appreciate it if families

would collect the stickers and bring them to school. There will

be some collection points throughout the school. Outside Rehn

Hall, in the Front Office and outside F5 classroom.

The class has voted on what we will get with the stickers and

we have developed a list in priority order. We will get as much

as we can off the list with the stickers we get.

1st priority is Recycle bins for the school as we are concerned

about all the soft plastic, paper and food that is going into

landfill.

2nd priority is Sand pit toys as there isn’t any at the moment

and there are 3 sand pits around the school.

3rd priority is an outdoor kitchen to go next to the sand pit.

4th priority is some more Aaron Blabey books for the library.

5th priority is some football and soccer balls to go in the sports

shed for children to borrow during lunch and recess.

CANTEEN

TERM 2/3 MENU: A new Term 2 and 3 menu will start at the

beginning of next term in anticipation of the winter months.

The popular wedges, and burger packs will return, along with

a variety of Friday lunch specials. Qkr will be updated and the

menu will be added to the Skoolbag App and Stradbroke

School website over the holidays. We will be deleting the fruit

salads and Slushies from the menu.

FROZEN YOGHURTS: Due to manufacturing issues, Frozen

Yoghurts are still unavailable. Please refer to Qkr before

ordering as I am able to "show" or "hide" any item depending

on availability.

SHOWDOWN DONUTS, WEEK 2: Just letting everyone know

that we will only be selling the Crows and Power donuts for the

first Showdown next term. This will be on Friday 10th May.

(The second one is at the end of term 2). All orders will have to

be pre-ordered by Thursday 9th May so we can place our

school order. Qkr will be updated accordingly so orders can be

placed from today, and again choose recess/pickup or

lunch/crate delivery option.

VOLUNTEERS: Thank you to everyone who has spent time in

the Canteen this term. Without your support, we would not be

able to provide the students the variety of recess or lunch

choices. If anyone is available next term, especially on

Thursdays, please let me know.

I hope everyone has a relaxing and safe holiday.

MYP SERVICE AND ACTION HOURS

As part of their learning in the MYP, students are encouraged

to demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to

make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the

environment. Students are recognised for their service both at

school and in the wider community. At Stradbroke the Year 6

and 7 students will take part in a Community Service program.

Congratulations to the following students who have completed

their hours for 2019:

LIBRARY

Holiday borrowing: We encourage students to borrow for the

school holidays during the year. Many students have taken up

the opportunity to grab a couple of good books for the

upcoming April holidays. Please be aware that upon returning

to school in Term 2 all library books will be overdue and we

appreciate students returning their books promptly in the first

week back.

Campbelltown Public Library: Public libraries are a great place

to visit, especially in the school holidays. Our local public library

and council are once again running programmes based in the

library as well as at other community places that sound fun and

free! (or minimal cost) visit

https://www.campbelltown.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=2086 as a

great starting point. The library itself provides a lovely

environment for some family reading and borrowing while our

school library is closed for the holidays.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

The Sudsy Challenge

In Australia, 1 in 200 people experience homelessness. The

Sudsy Challenge is an initiative developed by Orange Sky

Australia, the world’s first free mobile laundry service for

people experiencing homelessness. What started as an idea to

improve hygiene standards and restore dignity to people doing

it tough has evolved into something much bigger and more

powerful.

The Sudsy Challenge involves wearing the same set of clothes

for three days (without washing them!) To support this cause

Sophia Roach in F5 wore a special orange t-shirt on Friday 5

April, to start conversations that raise funds and awareness for

Orange Sky so that everyone can have access to a laundry van

like Sudsy.

More information on Orange Sky Australia can be found here:

https://orangesky.org.au/sudsy/

YEAR 6 ART GALLERY EXCURSION

On Monday 8 April, the Year 6 classes went on an excursion to

the Art Gallery of South Australia. Whilst at the Gallery, the

Year 6’s attended two tours and participated in a workshop.

We had a guided tour of the Ben Quilty exhibition and were

able to see his artistic techniques and style. Quilty uses the

Rorschach painting technique, as well as his emotions and

connections with Aboriginals, to produce many of his artworks.

In Ben Quilty’s son's studio, Joe's Studio, we were taught how

to draw a self portrait, using proportion to create facial

features with oil pastels. We also learnt how to draw detailed

eyes and noses, along with finishing by blending pastels

together to colour the face.

In the self-guided tour, we analysed different movements of

art and thought about the artist's reasons for creating their

artworks.

We are currently experiencing a greater percentage of students arriving to school late or not attending on a regular basis.

• Please call the school on 83372861 when your child is absent from school.

• When a child is absent or late for school, without exemption from the Principal, for 10 or more days in a term it is

deemed at ‘chronic non-attendance’.

• When there is a pattern of chronic non-attendance occurs or your child is late for 10 or more days, your child’s teacher will

request an interview with you to discuss how best to support you and your child.

• If the patterns of non-attendance continue I will then be notified to also offer support and strategies to support your

family getting your child to school. In some cases, after 10 or more days of non-attendance I also refer the case to

our Attendance and Engagement social workers within the Department for Education.

At Stradbroke we maintain a priority focus on student attendance and engagement. We know that educational success is central to

the lifelong achievement wellbeing and success of our students. We have high expectations for attendance and achievement.

International research demonstrates a high correlation between attendance at preschool and school and successful literacy and

numeracy outcomes. Research shows that non-attendance early in life can be a predictor of future patterns and can lead to lower

levels of achievement.

Parents and caregivers have primary responsibility for ensuring their children regularly attends school and that they are on time for

school, however if you would like support and practical solutions on how to improve your child’s attendance and engagement at

Stradbroke please contact Rachel Pontifex (Student Wellbeing Leader), 8337 2861.

Rachel Pontifex

It is important for your child to arrive on time for school so they do not miss out on valuable social and learning experiences.

What people are saying… What a relief to come across a program that preserves the

dignity of the child, maintains the self-control of both the

parent and the child and is actually easy to remember when

memory is the first thing to go!

I realized quickly that the 1-2-3 Magic can be a magnificent

preventative measure that any parent can use to avoid

raising a child, who later down the line, needs excessive

discipline or grows out of control.
