FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear students, parents and caregivers. Ngā mihi o te wa ki a koe me te whanau.
It is impossible to comprehend the horror of what occurred on Friday in Christchurch and our
thoughts and prayers go out to the families, whānau of those involved and to the people of Christchurch. Jacinda Ardern’s words shortly after the incident were “they are us” and this is certainly a sentiment that we as New Zealanders believe and fit our school values: AROHA and TOLERANT.
He ora te whakapiri, he mate te whakatakariri – there is strength in unity, defeat in anger/division.

Term 1 has certainly been a busy term and it is hard to believe we are already in week 8 and there are only three weeks until the end of the term. It is important that students do not see this as a time to relax and wind down but the opposite and keep working and ensuring that they keep up to date with all their work and remain focussed on their learning and goal they have set. We have had a busy 8 weeks with many students being involved in the wide range of activities.
Thank you to the large number of parents/caregivers who attended our Poutama goal setting day earlier this month. I’m sure you would have found this valuable, and the foundation and goals are now set for the year. The relationship that your son/daughter has with their academic mentor is a very important one in assisting with goal setting and monitoring achievement over the year. Students will meet with their academic mentor every three weeks and there will be key messages that will be delivered at various times, especially for seniors involved in NCEA. Our next round of Poutama interviews with parents and students will be at the end of term 2. We welcome any feedback on the process undertaken this year.
All students will receive a report during the last two weeks of the term. Seniors will receive a progress report (parent interviews on Tuesday 2 April) and year 9s will receive their first graduation report with parent interviews to be held on Thursday 11 April. The year 10s will receive their reports at the end of the term with a parent interview evening at the start of term 2. The critical part of this cycle are the report evenings and talking to your child’s teacher about their progress. An important aspect of your attendance at the report evening, is the message that it sends to your children that you and the school are working together to support them. Students should use the reports and interviews to reflect on their learning, and should then review and reset some goals, re-establish routines, and ensure a life and work balance.
On another note, well done to those students who have been attending school on time so far this year. Tardiness continues to be an issue for some of our students, which in turn has an impact on teaching and learning. I would like to encourage parents to maintain a strong contact with the school on a regular basis. We have a very robust pastoral care systems in place and parents/caregivers have the opportunity to address any subject concerns with the classroom teacher. If there are ongoing issues or concerns, please contact the form teacher first then the Dean.
As always if you have any questions, concerns or feedback do not hesitate to get in touch with the
school. We are grateful for the support of our parents and our wider community. Thank you. Ngā mihi nui, no reira tena koutou katoa. Mr Keenan, Principal

BBQ ACCCOUNTABILITY The Year 13 Accounting Class held a BBQ on
Athletics Day. This proved to be a successful
fundraising event to assist with financing their trip to
Wellington this month. A huge thank you to Dan and
Rebecca at New World for their sponsorship. Also,
thanks heaps to the students and staff who supported
the BBQ and to Mrs Baldwin for her amazing
assistance – no wonder the sausages and onions tasted
so good!!!

Special Olympics Athletics On Wednesday 6 March the students from Te
Rangimarie joined students from all over Taranaki to
participate in the Special Olympics Athletics in
Inglewood. It was a great opportunity for our
teenagers and young adults to be active, to have fun
and to show their skills in running, jumping and
throwing in a formal athletics situation. Several
parents came along to support our team. We were
very proud of the way our students performed,
conducted themselves and showed HEART values. They were a credit to Stratford High School, to
themselves and to their families, and they were a pleasure to be with.

NCEA NEWS The 2019 NCEA Handbook for students and parents has been included in the posting with the ATL Reports
for seniors. It is important that both students and parents/caregivers read through the handbook as it contains
important information regarding all elements, school processes and procedures related to NCEA Levels 1-3.
Please keep this booklet in a safe place for future reference. Also included is a copy of the 2019 NCEA Exam
timetable and candidate information sheet from NZQA. At the beginning of April, information and forms
regarding 2019 NCEA fees and financial assistance will be available.
Many of our senior classes are now fully involved in internal assessment activities and it is important to
impress upon your students the need to be present before and during assessment, to attempt every part of the
assessment and to do the best that they can.
There are several students involved in Distance Learning programmes this year: STAR, Trades Academy, 3+2,
Correspondence School. Credits from their courses contribute to their NCEA results. This learning is self-
directed, and the students involved must remain committed to completing their units of work on time to gain
the credits available. The students have time allocated at school to do this work, but some time should be
allocated for homework as well.
In our past two assemblies we have acknowledged those students who gained Merit or Excellence
endorsements to their NCEA Level 1 and Level 2 Certificates in 2018 as well as those students who gained
Course (subject) Merit or Excellence endorsements in 2018. A listing is below and on the school website.
We are presently processing and applying for Special Assessment Conditions for 2019 NCEA candidates and
if you have any queries about the eligibility of your student(s) please contact me. If there is anything you wish
to discuss with reference to NCEA please contact me at school on 7656039 extn 706.
