Welcome to the new Strathfield Council Community Newsletter. Each quarter we will be providing you an update on Council initiatives that benefit your community and make you as a resident proud to call Strathfield home.

Following ongoing instances of graffiti in Fitzgerald Park, Council voted to adopt a more proactive approach to combat these attacks.

It is acknowledged that graffiti artists will respect the artwork of others and based on this research, Council retained the services of Street Art Murals Australia. This not for profit organisation works with local youths to develop designs that would enliven Fitzgerald Park.

Youths were drawn from the Australian International Academy, Homebush Boys High School and Strathfield Girls High School. Following three weeks of design and development, artwork has been completed on park seating, barbeques and soon decorative tree guards will be put in put in place to protect tree trunks from vandalism.

Aside from enhancing the park environment, Council anticipates this initiative will reduce graffiti and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Coming up on Sunday 26 June, Strathfield Council will hold its 7th Annual Cooks River Fun Run. Entries are now open for the 5km run and walk, 10km run and relay and 2km kids run. Early bird entries are open online until 5pm Friday 10 June.

I would like to invite all residents to participate in the fun run and take in the beautiful scenery on this great running track. The kids run and 5km walk provide options for the whole family, making it a great active morning for the local community.

For the fourth year in a row, the event is supporting Bowel Cancer Australia with $5 from each entry donated to assist with research and awareness for this important cause.

On the amalgamation front, Strathfield Council’s position is still to remain independent. Council understands that the delegate is currently preparing his report and will provide his finding to the Minister in due course. We will keep you informed on the progress.

Bin inspection program & RECYCLING STATIONS

Harmony Day

As part of Council’s Recycling Bin Inspection and Education Program, Council’s waste education contractor EnviroCom, are inspecting recycling bins. The project is being rolled out in select streets in Strathfield, Greenacre, Homebush and Homebush West.

In the last six months, Council collected approximately 2,000 tonnes of recycling. The Bin Inspection Program aims to educate residents on what is and isn’t recyclable and lower contamination. Remember to reduce consumption, reuse where you can and recycle as much as possible. Together we can work towards a greener future for generations to come.

To encourage residents to recycle and offer an alternative for disposal of problem wastes, Strathfield Council has implemented Community Recycle Stations. Residents can find these at the following locations:

• Council Customer Service Centre, 65 Homebush Road, Strathfield • Main Library, 65-67 Rochester Street, Strathfield • High Street Library, 64 High Street, Strathfield

Residents can recycle household batteries, light globes (excluding halogen and LED) and CDs/ DVDs at the stations.

Soccer season is among us and now our local teams can score their goals in newly installed soccer posts. The outdated posts were removed in late-March. The $15,000 post upgrades demonstrate Council’s commitment to continuously upgrading our facilities for the community.

Are you looking for a way to actively be part of your community? Bushcare groups are a fantastic way to meet your neighbours and take care of your local environment. Our program has been running for over 15 years in Strathfield. Our primary focus is revegetation, weed control and planting native species to meet the needs of wildlife. To celebrate Harmony Day Strathfield Council held a community event which featured performances by many local cultural groups. Strathfield has a largely multicultural community. Just over 50% of our residents are born overseas with the most popular birthplaces being:

There were a number of informative talks on the day from community groups supporting multiculturalism. MP’s Craig Laundy and Jodi McKay also came along to express their gratitude for the many cultures that call Strathfield home. There were record numbers present on the day with over 2,000 guests in attendance. We look forward to another great event next year.

Community Works

To further recognise the contribution of George Bressington to the local community, Strathfield Council is proposing to rename Bressington Park to ‘Bressington Memorial Park’. As part of the process, Council would like to hear feedback from the wider community. Contact Council during opening hours on 9748 9999 to share your comments.

In the 2015/16 financial year the Infrastructure Planning group has delivered 17 parking, traffic and transport projects to improve the amenities in Strathfield.

Underpinning work on the Town Hall has recently been completed. Other works such as flooring upgrades in the Supper Room and a new kitchen is programmed for completion in 2016.

Remediation of the soil at 29-30 Loftus Crescent is being programmed which will allow for the construction of a community park. (Draft landscape plan adjacent.)

Planning is also underway for drainage upgrades in The Boulevarde and Amaroo Avenue which are planned for completion by the end of June.

REFURBISH ed WAR MemorialOn the 8th November Strathfield Council opened the newly refurbished WW1 Homebush Memorial at Davey Square. The original plaques from the old Homebush-Strathfield RSL Sub- Branch were moved and placed on the new memorial. The memorial serves as a commemoration of the commitment and sacrifice of our Australian servicemen.

Community Report Snapshot 2014/2015Over the past year, Council delivered a wide range of services and local infrastructure to the Strathfield community. Council delivered strong financial returns in 2014/15 with total assets of $313 million and a $10.2 million surplus that will be directed to new and renewed local infrastructure such as roads, footpaths, drainage and parks. This positive financial result along with no debts support continued maintenance of facilities and enhancements in the delivery of services.

Council implemented significant improvements to local roads and footpaths which included road upgrades at Richmond Road, Arthur Street, Redmyre Road, Barker Road, Wallis Avenue and Albyn Road; footpath works at Knight Street, Newton Road, Ismay Ave, Burlington Road, Dickson Street, Albert Road and Underwood Road; traffic calming works at Wallis Avenue and Newton Road intersection, Beresford Road and Elva Street intersection, extensive line marking and upgrades at Homebush Road, Wallis Avenue, Newton Road, Arthur Street, Barker Road and Dickson Street.

The ongoing management and continual improvements to over 60 parks in the Strathfield area make recreation and open space a strategic priority. Highlights in the last 12 months include dedication of a new park - Arnotts Reserve - in Homebush,

Community Report Snapshot 2014/2015 CONTINUEDinstallation of new fitness equipment in Airey Park and a playground at Henley Reserve. National Tree Day and Bushcare programs have involved hundreds of volunteers who have assisted in bush regeneration work and planting of over 5,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses in parks, natural areas and wetlands.

Providing clean, safe and attractive areas in Strathfield is a Council priority and supported by a range of programs including waste and recycling, graffiti, vandalism, illegal dumping initiatives, animal management, ranger services, food inspections, fortnightly street sweeping, litter removal from parks and streets, and daily cleaning of town centres.

Council regularly distributes calendars to households of upcoming events. Events are designed to provide a diverse range of activities to create a sense of community and celebrate significant dates. These include Australia Day, Cooks River Fun Run, Spring Festival, Food Festival, Movies in the Park, HSC Art Show and the Christmas Carols Concert. Other community activities such as Seniors Week, Youth Week, Harmony Day, Clean Up Australia Day and National Tree Day are also celebrated in Strathfield. In addition to civic and community events, Council holds a number of forums, workshops and meetings for specific community groups.

Strathfield Council provides community services and events that support and promote the wellbeing and inclusion of the local community. Council runs English conversation classes, traditional arts and crafts workshops as well as various multicultural activities for our diverse ethnic groups.

Strathfield’s Library and Information Services are located in Rochester St Homebush and High Street Strathfield. Over the past 12 months, they received over 250,000 visits and loaned over 207,000 resources. The library also provided a range of services including Storytime, Baby Bounce, Home Library Service and School Holiday Programs.
