Tuition Fees

For degree courses (e.g. Medicine) starting in 2013 universities can charge up to £9,000 per year for UK and EU undergraduates. The University of East Anglia (UEA) will be charging £9,000. This is not an upfront cost; there is a Tuition Fee Loan available.

Full time UK and EU students can obtain a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the cost of their course. The fee is paid directly to your university on your behalf and is administered by Student Finance England. You can borrow the full fee, part of the fee or none of the fee for each year of your study. You pay back the loan once you have finished studying and are earning over £21,000 a year.

Tuition fee amounts vary for students from the Channel Islands. For the most up-to-date UEA fee amounts please visit

NHS Funded Courses

Eligible students residing in the UK, studying Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practice or Speech and Language Therapy will not pay tuition fees; these will be covered by the NHS.

In addition eligible students will normally receive a small non-means tested NHS Grant, currently £1,000 per annum, and may apply for a means tested Bursary. Students can also apply for a reduced rate non-means tested Living Cost Loan (also known as a Maintenance Loan) from Student Finance England. NHS students are not eligible to apply for Living Cost Grant or a UEA bursary. Eligibility for bursaries is at the discretion of the NHS Business Services Authority and further information and criteria is available from:

Medicine/Dentistry

In the final year of a Medicine or Dentistry course, fees are paid by the NHS. The Department of Health have confirmed that students starting “on the five or six year undergraduate programme between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2015 will continue to have their fees paid through the NHS bursary in years five and six of the course”. There is also an NHS Bursary (linked to household income) available in the final year. Students can apply for a Living Cost Loan each year but in the final year it is available at a reduced rate.

Medicine Funding for Graduates

Students who already hold a degree and wish to study the MBBS Medicine programme are eligible for some funding. These students can apply for a Living Cost Loan through Student Finance England. These students are not eligible to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan. The final year of the course is funded by the NHS, as above.

Social Work

Students studying Social Work may be eligible to apply for a Bursary from the NHS. For further details visit:

Living Cost Loan

Living Cost Loans (also referred to a as a Student Loan or Maintenance Loan) are available from Student Finance England for UK students. They are designed to help with living costs such as course materials, accommodation and food. The loan is usually paid in three instalments, one at the start of each term, directly into your bank account.

Living in parental home £4,375

Living and studying in London £7,675

Living and studying elsewhere (outside London)

£5,500

The amount of loan you are entitled to depends on your household income and where you live whilst you study. The table above gives you an indication of the maximum loan you could receive. Everyone is entitled to 65 per cent of the loan (non-income assessed) with only 35 per cent being dependant on household income. Those from lower income households will be eligible for a larger amount of loan.

Students studying NHS funded courses are eligible to apply for a Living Cost Loan but the amount they receive is at a reduced rate.

Repaying Fee and Living Cost Loans

You only become liable to start repaying your Tuition Fee and Living Cost Loans once you have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year. Repayments are linked to what you earn and not what you owe.

An example:

- A student finishes their degree in July 2016

- Their salary is £25,000, so they earn £4,000 in excess of £21,000

- Repayments are calculated at £30 per month (9 per cent of £4,000/12)

- From April 2017 £30 is deducted from their wages via PAYE

If you earn more, you pay back a little more each month, if you earn less, you pay back a little less each month.

Interest Rates

Interest on your loan will be applied at inflation (RPI – Retail Price Index) plus 3 per cent while you are studying, and up until the April after you leave university. From the April after you graduate, if you are earning below £21,000 a year, interest will be applied at the rate of inflation.

For graduates earning between £21,000 a year and £41,000 a year, interest will be applied between RPI and RPI plus 3 per cent on a gradual scale depending on income. For graduates earning above £41,000 a year, interest will be applied at RPI plus 3 per cent.

If your salary falls below £21,000 a year your repayments automatically stop. If you take a career break, go on maternity leave or are unemployed your repayments will be suspended until you are earning over the £21,000 threshold. However, interest on the loan will continue to be applied even if your repayments are suspended. If your loan has not been paid off after 30 years (starting from the April after you graduate) the balance is written off. The loan does not pass to parents or any future children and will not impact on your ability to get a mortgage.

Living Cost Grant

UK students may be eligible for a non-repayable Living Cost Grant (sometimes referred to as a Maintenance Grant) in 2013 worth up to £3,354 per year, to help with day to day costs such as rent, food, travel and entertainment.

The grant is administered by Student Finance England and is non-repayable. The grant is usually paid in three instalments, one at the start of each term, directly into your bank account.

The amount of grant support that you will receive depends on your household income.

Household Income Grant Amount

Less than £25,000 £3,354

Between £25,000 and £42,611 Part of £3,354

Over £42,611 Not eligible for grant

Students studying NHS funded courses are not eligible for grant support.
