Our Expressive Arts week is in full swing! Don’t forget Thursday 12 September is our showcase concert, opening with our art exhibition from 5:30pm. The canteen and coffee cart will also be open then to have an early dinner. The showcase commences at 6:30pm and there will be raffles throughout the evening. Then the final of our talent quest is Friday 13 September from 9-11am. Come along and experience a fun morning of amazingly talented kids!

Creativity is our learning super power at the moment. Many align creativity with artistic talents but it’s soo much more at Ferny Grove. According to our students this is what Creativity is? I am a creative learner because…

I think outside the box and give 100%. I use my imagination; let my imagination run wild. I like imagining. I try something different every time. I love to think about how to make items. I help others expand their mindset. I share ideas. I am original.

Ask you children if they have been a creative learner today!

Thank you so much for your ongoing support this term in the educational partnership with your child. I hope you all have a wonderful spring break doing what you most enjoy with those you love. See you next term.

Middle Years news

Dear parents & caregivers,

This will be the last newsletter distributed to families for the term. Looking back over the recent weeks it’s clear to see that we’ve had a wide range of exciting learning opportunities for our students. The Expressive Arts week has been a fabulous culminating event for our school community. It’s been a wonderful opportunity to showcase the artistic skills of our talented students. The highlight of our expressive arts weeks is the Expressive Arts Showcase held on Thursday 12 September.

Also, I’d like to use this final newsletter to inform the community that I’ll be returning to my substantive position at Camira SS from the commencement of Term 4. Unfortunately I’ve had a change in personal circumstances that has impacted on my family (and subsequently, being able to continue at Ferny Grove SS). The new Principal for Term 4 will be Mr Simon Boyce. Simon is currently the Principal of Amberley District SS and is looking forward to joining the team at Ferny Grove in the very near future.

Although I’ve only been at Ferny Grove for a short time, it’s very clear that the school has a rich culture and powerful focus on student learning. The school has many hardworking and dedicated staff and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time. I’d like to thank the students, staff and parents for the welcome to the school and wish you all the best for the remainder of the 2019 school year.

Yours sincerely,

Glenn Glenn Forbes, A/Principal

PREP 2020 Our online booking system SOBs is now open for prep 2020 enrolment interviews. If you have a child born 1 July 2014 – 30 June 2015 they are eligible to start prep next year. If you have not yet completed an Expression of Interest please do so immediately. I look forward to meeting our newest students next week along with our prep teachers who will be helping to do these interviews.

Resilience

Recently I was reading an interesting article around resilience and the role schools now play in teaching this. School really shouldn’t be the first time our children are required to draw on their resilience. It is so important that children have experienced moments of challenge and adversity under the loving, supportive care of their parents. When children first start at school they should already know what if feels like to lose when they play a game. They should be familiar with the experience of being told no. They should be aware that adults provide boundaries of behavioural expectations and consequences. What schools are noticing however is that many students are arriving at school ill-equipped to face even the most common everyday challenge. So what might this look like? As parents we need to stop letting our children win the board game! They need to experience loss. Resist the temptation to rescue them when they are going to make a mistake. They learn from mistakes. Let them play the way they want to play. Don’t bullet proof their experiences, free play is where they learn problem solving, risk taking, cooperation and resilience. Give them time to do things for themselves. Let them dress themselves and pack their bags – I know that often as parents to save time we do these things for them but these tasks develop persistence, mastery and resilience. Give your children responsibilities – make their bed, unstack the dishwasher, feed the cat – these all provide opportunities for them to contribute, manage time and be responsible. I completely understand wanting to protect children from this feeling of losing or failing at a task, but the reality is that they will have to face the real world at some time. They will, despite our best effort experience feelings of disappointment, frustration and upset throughout the course of their life. As parents and educators we cannot and we should not continually rescue them from these things. If they

are constantly rescued they’ll never learn to draw on their own resilience. Resilience doesn’t mean abandoning our children or asking them to detach from their feelings. Resilience is about putting life’s everyday events and adversities onto a scale of importance. We need to show our children that certain moments are inevitable and frustrating, but in order to succeed we need strategies to help us deal with these moments.

School Holidays

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of another school term. What a fabulous busy term 3 it has been -so many things going on and so many opportunities for our students. Please enjoy the upcoming holidays and find the time to relax and recharge ready for another busy 10 weeks for term 4.

Writing

‘Spoonies’ have been spotted causing mischief in 1VW. These creatures are being used as a writing stimulus as the class document their adventures around the school and then turning these into an E-Book. Well done 1VW – you guys know how to make writing fun!

Garry Thompson, PE Teacher

Chappy Chat Kindness matters and I love when a student comes up with an idea, explains what they want to do and we are able to help facilitate that. Yesterday Olivia T and myself delivered on a plan to give the Administration staff some Kindness Crumble. I encouraged her to do up a little gift tag and that was facilitated by her teacher. She took time away from friends and worked on this project over three lunch breaks. At 1.30pm yesterday we delivered the goods complete with a serviette a beautiful note, a dollop of cream and the most incredible smile. What takes this kindness to an extra level which totally blesses me is that at no time did she ask for one herself. Her joy was in the giving with no expectation of needing anything in return.

Be the reason someone smiles, be the reason someone feels loved and believe in the goodness of people. Be Mindful Be Positive Be Grateful Be True Be Kind

No act of kindness not matter how small is ever wasted.

There was a beautiful smile on all the faces of the people who received their gift.

Defence news

As the end of the year approaches, the current year 5 students will be preparing to apply for leadership roles in year 6. These spots are hotly contested and give the students of FGSS valuable experience. Applying for these roles requires students to demonstrate commitment to their community and leadership qualities.

We are extremely proud of the Defence students who have taken up the opportunity to give back to the FGSS community through the Defence students’ leadership program, offered to year 5 students during term 3. We've had 3 groups of year 5 students participate and they have demonstrated great leadership skills, initiative, maturity, respect and teamwork.

As a result, younger students have enjoyed games such as Red Rover, Pacman and most amusing for me, Dodgeball! Who knew it was actually a sport and not just a movie!

Defence Students’ Expressive Arts Contribution

It has been a hive of activity here at the school as teachers and students enthusiastically prepare their submissions for the visual arts component of this week’s Expressive Arts activities.

Here in the Defence/Chappy room it has been no different! We have undertaken two projects. One is an indigenous themed project in the form of a goanna painted onto a branch. The other is a canvas inspired by the sacrifice made by all those brave men and woman who have sacrificed everything during past conflicts. This piece is all about colours and flowers, especially poppies that inspired great poetry, writing and a pride in our nation.

The students have had a great time learning a new art skill, "Decoupage" and collaborating with peers. They have also put forward many impressive artistic ideas, which helped create a beautiful art piece. We hope you enjoy all the art and talent on display this week.

Administration news

Attendance is important. Every day missed is a missed opportunity and missed learning. Just one day off each fortnight equals more than a year of learning missed over 12 years.

Being late adds up too. Just 12 minutes late each day, adds up to an hour each week. That’s a full day missed every month of school.

Every day at school counts. Please help your children to get to school and get to school on time and ready to learn.
