This year Chizuk Amuno celebrates 140 years of presence and participation in the larger Baltimore community and in the United States, as well as in our connection with

Israel. We have always prided ourselves on our leadership role in adult learning, and we continue to maintain adult learning as a priority in our congregation.

About 2,000 years ago, the mishnah articulated what was perhaps the first formal curriculum: 5 years old - Bible; 10 - Mishnah; 13 - Mitzvot; 15 - Talmud; 18 - marriage; 20 - pursuit of a livelihood; 30 - the peak of one’s powers; 40 - understanding; 50 - the age of counsel; 60 - old age, and so on.

Well, things are far different now. They are even very different from what they were 140 years ago. Happily, today we can look forward to long, productive lives. We recognize that adults continue to develop personally, especially if their lives are enriched with Torah. It is our goal to make every adult a lifelong learner; to join others on a never ending journey that continues to enrich us as Jews.

Please join us as we continue to grow Jewishly, to learn with and from one another, and to prepare for the future of our beloved congregation.

A dynamic teacher and lecturer, Dr. Kraemer is the Joseph J. and Dora Abbell Librarian and professor of Talmud and Rabbinics at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He is the author of numerous articles that have appeared in a wide variety of journals and the author of several books, including Jewish Eating and Identity Through the Ages.

Verdi’s Nabucco—An Opera SeminarKen Meltzer, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Program Annotator and “Insider”

Sunday, March 131 - 4 p.m.“With this opera, my artistic career may be said to have begun.” Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi scored a remarkable triumph when his early opera, Nabucco, premiered at the La Scala Opera House in Milan on March 9, 1842. Verdi’s powerful and revolutionary musical setting of the story of exiled Hebrews, suffering under the domination of the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, resonated with Italians yearning for their own unified homeland. Nabucco immediately catapulted Verdi to national - and ultimately international - prominence.

The class will offer an in-depth examination of Verdi’s Nabucco - the story (including its original biblical sources), the music, and the opera’s profound significance in Verdi’s career and life. Numerous audio and video musical excerpts will be featured.
