Alzheimer’s Memorial Wall Team Unforgettable – keeping memories alive!
T here’s a special event that occurs every summer in the Fabulous 40s neighborhood of Sacramento. It’s a
gathering of family and friends who are taking action to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Saturday, July 14, 2012, marks the 5th year of the City of Sacramento 5k Championship (also known as the Fab 40s 5k Run/Walk), and about 1,700 participants are expected. All benefits go to local Alzheimer’s agencies.
“The purpose of the race is to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s — the sixth leading cause of death in the United States,” says Lisa West, marketing director for East Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries and race committee member.
West lost her grandmother to Alzheimer’s in 2007. She has been on the race committee since it began and is one of many who have witnessed the effects of the disease and are actively fighting for a cure.
“It robs people of their families,” says West. “They don’t know who you are any more.”
Many of East Lawn’s 100 employees from its five locations will be volunteering at the race, which begins and ends just inside the East Lawn gate at 43rd Street and Folsom Boulevard. Vendor booths and family activities will also be at the entrance. The race winds through the Fabulous
40s homes around East Lawn and is the only 5K championship race held in Sacramento.
In another attempt to bring awareness to the disease, a very significant granite wall was recently built at East Lawn — an Alzheimer’s Memorial Wall. It was dedicated on November 1, 2011, and is the first of its kind in the nation. It holds names of those who are living with the disease as well as those who have passed. On the wall is a picture of a grandmother with two of her grandsons. Her name is Eileen Miller and she is one of many suffering from the disease. The community is encouraged to purchase engraved names. Proceeds will go towards caregivers and agencies supporting Alzheimer’s families.
“Our goal is to help with memory diseases that shorten people’s lives or make their golden years more difficult,” says West. “We believe there is a cure for Alzheimer’s. We just have to find it.”
