ArthritisDancing at My Daughter’s Wedding“About two years ago, I began having constant pain in my right hip. I got some relief from a chiropractor, but the pain always returned, whether I was sit-ting, standing, walking, or lying down. He told me there was no cartilage in my hip – it was bone on bone – and there was really not much he could do.

It was getting worse every week, so I went to a hip specialist in Tyler, Texas. He gave me three options.

1. Do nothing and be in a wheelchair in two years.

2. Take anti-inflammatories, come back in two years and have a complete hip replacement.

3. Have a hip replacement right then, fol-lowed by six months of rehabilitation.

My father-in-law, Leon Lewis, who sub-scribes to Dr. Whitaker’s newsletter, Health & Healing, suggested I look into the Whitaker Wellness Institute for stem cell therapy. After a few phone calls to the clinic, we decided to bite the bullet and try it, and I went to California for the procedure.

Six months later, I can sit, stand, walk, and sleep with absolutely no discom-fort. Every once in a while if I take a step wrong, I get a sharp pain in my hip, but it goes away quickly. It’s such a blessing to not be in constant pain. I would definitely recommend stem cell therapy to anyone who has been told surgery is the only alternative.”

– Mel Hudman, Graham, Texas

How a Marathoner/Mountain Climber Overcomes PainPierre Veres has been a patient at Whitaker Wellness for over seven years, and it shows. Extremely active and fit, he credits the clinic with helping him stay “on the road.” Three years ago, Pierre decided to run his first mara-thon – at the age of 64! – which he ran

with his 18-year-old grandson. Pierre is also a serious hiker and stays in shape by trekking at least 10 miles on weekends in the hills near his home.

Actually, Pierre is being modest by calling himself a hiker. He summit-ed 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro last year; he and his grandson climbed Mt. Whitney (the highest peak in the continental U.S.) and Yosemite’s Half Dome this past summer; and he’s planning on tackling the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu this fall.

How can a man who is 67 do all this? He eats a good diet, maintains his op-timal weight, takes nutritional sup-plements, and when he has flare-ups of knee pain, comes to the Whitaker Wellness Institute for laser therapy. As you can imagine, all that activity, not to mention nearly seven decades of the usual wear and tear, takes a toll, and Pierre’s problems usually crop up

in his knees. When he mentioned this to his physician at Whitaker Wellness, she suggested a course of high-inten-sity laser therapy.

High-intensity laser produces a particular wavelength of light that penetrates deep into affected tissues, where it increases blood flow, boosts cellular metabolism, reduces inflammation, and has an analgesic effect on nerve endings. We use it at the clinic to treat acute sprains and strains, degenerative joint disease in the neck and back, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and other repetitive and overuse injuries.

Pierre received six treatments in February and had such tremendous improvements that he was able to run the Los Angeles Marathon in mid-March.

“Dancing with my daughter at her wedding – something I wasn’t sure I would be able to do before the stem cell procedure.”

Anti-AgingCelebrating Decades of Good HealthI had a very pleasant chat recent-ly with James Felter from Scottsdale, Arizona, who first came to the Whitaker Wellness Institute in 1981, two years after I opened the clinic. We reminisced about the good old days – and the positive and enduring effects of his experience at the clinic.

“In 1981, I had a TIA [transient ischemic attack or ‘mini-stroke’]. My doctor in Scottsdale didn’t have any suggestions, and my wife had just read about your clinic in the newspaper. Your approach made sense, so I came out for a week. I’ve followed your advice ever since.

“I still eat the healthy diet I learned about at the clinic and have never had a weight problem. I drink a lot of water and low-sodium V8 juice. I go to the gym two or three times a week and work out on an elliptical machine. One of the things I learned during my first visit 21 years ago was the importance of nutritional supplements. I remember how you acknowledged that some of us were worried about taking all these supplements, so you said, ‘I’m going to show you how to take 25 pills all at once.’ And you did! Now, that made a lasting impression. I still take quite a few vitamins every day.

“At age 86, I have no real complaints. I occasionally feel a little unsteady when I walk, but I have no aches or pains, and the only drug I take is a low dose of verapamil for my blood pres-sure. The only time I ever see a doctor in Scottsdale is to have it refilled every two or three years. However, I read your newsletter and follow your advice reli-giously. After all these years, I still con-sider Dr. Whitaker to be my physician.”

Secrets of a Whitaker Wellness Centenarian

Anthony Barcelona, a Whitaker Wellness patient from Florida, turned 100 in 2012. How do Anthony and other healthy cente-narians do it?

For starters, he stays active. Virtually every study examining lifestyle factors and longevity points to the importance of exercise. Anthony walks a mile and a half to two miles a day, plays bocce and pool, and bowls. That’s a lot of activity for a person of any age, but even more moderate levels are beneficial.

Anthony also occasionally sings with a karaoke group and enjoys socializing, another characteristic linked with longevity. You don’t have to do karaoke, but staying in the flow of life goes a long way toward keeping us healthy.

Finally, he regularly takes nutri-tional supplements.

“I have been taking many of your sup-plements for many years now. I feel good, look good, and people contin-ue to be amazed when they hear my age and see how active I am.”

Autoimmune Disorders“Coming to Whitaker Wellness Is Like Winning the Lottery”Ashley is a vivacious young woman from Nova Scotia, Canada, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2010. Her symptoms were severe and includ-ed unrelenting fatigue, vision problems, numbness in her feet and left leg, and difficulties with balance and walking. She was started on an experimental new drug, but she had to go on disability and her supplemental insurance coverage ran out after six months, so she was looking at monthly bills of $3,300–$40,000 a year – for a single drug.

At that point, her employer, Deane Parkes of Preferred Nutrition in

Ontario, Canada, generously offered to send her to Whitaker Wellness for two weeks. After her initial evaluation at the clinic, she was started on a ther-apeutic diet and supplement program and daily treatment with hyperbar-ic oxygen, intravenous vitamins and minerals, and infrared light therapy. Ashley was delighted with the results.

“During the first week, the feeling in my feet started to return. My balance was bet-ter, and I felt steadier when I walked. My energy picked up, and I was much more clearheaded. I also had improvements in my vision. I had been having a hard

time distinguishing between browns and purples, reds and oranges, and whites and yellows. I received a picture of my daugh-ter during my stay, and to my amazement I could see that her nail polish was pur-ple! That’s something most people take for granted, but it was a huge deal to me. By the time I left Whitaker Wellness, I tru-ly felt like a different person.

“That was eight months ago. I’ve stayed on my diet, do Pilates regularly, and take supplements – fish oil, vitamin D, multi-vitamins, your Essential Greens, Poly MVA, and lots more. I also continue to use an infrared light machine on my leg and spine every night, get weekly infusions of IV nutrients from a naturopath, and re-main under the care of my local physician.

“There’s nothing like going to Whitaker Wellness. I feel like I won the lottery! I want to thank the Whitaker clinic and Deane for giving me hope. MS is such a hard disease. The clinic made it possi-ble for me to have more good days than bad – and Deane made it possible for me to go to the clinic. So thank you for putting a smile on my face. I may have MS, but I am extremely lucky.”

– Ashley M., Nova Scotia, Canada

Multiple Sclerosis Better After Two Weeks of Treatment“I have multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and migraines. When I first arrived at the clinic, I had little energy and could barely walk. I could not raise my arms above my head, and numbness and burning in my hands limited their use. After four days of hyperbaric oxygen treatments, I was able to walk better, and by the second week I could put on my own make-up and hold a glass with one hand. Your genuine concern for my well-being is very comforting and encouraging.” – Denice W., California

Lupus: “Pain Is Gone, Head Is Clear, I Am Drug-Free – and No Cane!”“I have had health problems most of my life, but it wasn’t until I was 25 and the mother of two boys that I was di-agnosed with lupus. Although I was on a crazy regimen of chemo drugs and narcotic painkillers, I often had to walk with a cane. A dear friend of mine, who is an alumni of your clinic, kept telling me I needed to get out there ASAP. Earlier this year, I made the choice to take charge of my life, so I kissed my young family goodbye and spent 14 days at Whitaker Wellness. I have had tremendous results. My pain is gone, my head is clear, I am drug-free – and no cane! I have been truly healed.” – Heather M., Texas

AutismHuge Strides with Neurofeedback and Hyperbaric OxygenLiam was a bright, curious, excep-tionally social child who talked up a storm and loved to play and explore

– until around 18 months of age, when he began to regress. By the time he was two and a half, he was not only failing to meet developmental mile-stones, but he no longer spoke or in-teracted with others. His parents took Liam to one expert after another, and shortly before his fourth birthday, he was diagnosed with regressive autism. Because Liam had severe reactions to every round of vaccinations, his family believes his autism is vaccine-related.

Treatment with speech and behavior-al therapy, an allergen-free diet, fish oil, and other supplements resulted in noticeable benefits. But improvements really kicked into high gear when six-year-old Liam came to Whitaker Wellness, where he was treated with neurofeedback, a type of biofeedback that helps normalize brainwave pat-terns, and hyperbaric oxygen, an ex-cellent therapy for any type of brain injury or dysfunction.

At the end of his fifteenth neuro-feedback session, Liam formulated

– without any prompting – his first full sentence: “I’m hungry.” His mom, Susan, who couldn’t have been more surprised and delighted, recently up-dated us on Liam’s progress:

“Liam is putting together more words, including two-word phrases such as drink please, park play, go car, and my bed. He has also started using short sentences like, ‘More juice, please. Thank you.’ It’s infrequent but he’s definitely trying. Liam’s level of understanding has also improved noticeably to everyone who has regular contact with him. It’s nice to hear others point out these positive changes.

“Socially, Liam has made huge strides since first arriving at the Whitaker clinic. He no longer has severe anxiety in crowds and has begun engaging in group activities. At a recent visit to a water park, he was taking turns chasing another child. Interactive play like that, regardless of how simple, is a huge leap for Liam.

“We are encouraged by these improve-ments and hope to return to Whitaker Wellness for another round of treatment.

We would also like to encourage other parents and shed light on ‘alternative’ therapies, since far too often parents are given no hope at all for their chil-dren, just as we were. It’s a good thing we didn’t listen to those so-called ex-perts or Liam wouldn’t have made the significant progress he has so far!”

– Susan C., Seattle, Washington

Chronic PainRelief for an Aching BackFor years, Joe awoke every morning with throbbing and stiffness in his lower back. The pain got better as the day progressed, but it never really went away. An avid backpacker, Joe managed to stay fairly active in spite of his dis-comfort. However, unrelenting pain can wear down even the best of us.

Joe tried over-the-counter drugs and months of chiropractic treatments with minimal results. He saw an orthopedic surgeon who ordered X-rays and an MRI and gave him steroid injections. The shots provided some relief, but the pain quickly returned. Then Joe read about prolotherapy, a unique treatment we use at the Whitaker Wellness Institute to al-leviate chronic back and neck problems.

Prolotherapy targets the ligaments, the bands of connective tissue that

hold the vertebrae in proper position. When these ligaments are weak or lax, the spinal column becomes misaligned, triggering muscle spasms, irritation of nerves, and pressure on disks that may lead to degeneration and herniation. Strengthening these supporting struc-tures restores proper alignment, and symptoms disappear—not for weeks but for years.

Even though prolotherapy wasn’t covered by insurance, Joe figured it was worth a try. Anything was better than living with pain. Two years lat-er, 60-year-old Joe feels like a million bucks. Last year he trekked 68 miles of Yosemite’s John Muir Trail, and over the holidays he hiked the Grand Canyon—free from back pain.

“After Five Years of Misery, I’m Now Pain-Free”“I have been very active most of my life until five years ago, when I tore the tendons in my knee during a yoga class. Although I went to several doctors trying to get relief from the pain, which was al-ways present and pretty intense at times, all they offered were painkillers, shots (which didn’t help), and surgery. I found a chiropractor who helped somewhat, but she eventually told me there was nothing more she could do, so I resigned myself to getting used to the pain.

“A few months ago, I came to the Whitaker Wellness Institute because I was having digestive problems, and my husband, a Health & Healing subscrib-er, thought I should try an alternative approach. In addition to successfully treating my gastrointestinal issues, my doctor suggested that I exercise. When I told him I couldn’t because of my knee pain, he recommended high-in-tensity laser.

“I was skeptical, since laser sounds a lit-tle scary, but I was told it was painless and it was certainly better than surgery, so I agreed. After the first treatment, I took a few steps, favoring my other leg as I was used to doing – but there was no pain! I had three more treatments, and now my knee is perfectly normal.

“What a difference this has made in my life, just to be able to walk normally without pain. The stairs in my two-story home are no longer a challenge, and I can exercise, walk my dogs, and do just about anything. I can tell you from personal experience

Less Pain, More Energy, and a Positive Outlook on Life“I have suffered from osteoarthritis and cervical and thoracic bone spurs for many years. My pain was constant, agonizing, and lately so intense that I wanted to give up – I just wanted the pain to end. Conventional treat-ment put me on one medication af-ter another, which caused numerous harsh side effects, including diges-tive issues and eventually abdominal bleeding. I was in bad shape.

“When I arrived at Whitaker Wellness, my pain levels were up to an ex-treme 10. My hips and thighs were in agony and the joints in my right hand were so sensitive that giving a handshake to the people I met at the clinic was out of the question. After just one week of treatment at Whitaker Wellness, my pain subsid-ed enormously. Most significantly, I was able to personally thank Dr. Whitaker and shake his hand!

“I can’t say which one therapy ben-efitted me the most. I honestly feel that it’s the combination of the Back to Health program, the sup-plements, and all the therapies that have helped me immensely. I can go home with less pain, more en-ergy, and better ability to help my wife with her health issues. I plan to continue healing and maintaining this more positive outlook on life.”

– W.K., Calgary, Canada

that you don’t have to accept being in pain and misery. Do not believe doctors who tell you that drugs and surgery are your only answers. High-intensity laser and the other alternative treatments at Whitaker Wellness work!”

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)“Stem Cell Therapy Has Made a Vast Difference in My Life”

“I was a smoker for 53 years. I finally managed to find a way to quit – then four months later, I found out I had COPD. It got to the point that I could not walk a block without feeling like I was running out of air, which was life-changing because I’m a very active person.

“So my wife and I decided to go to the Whitaker Wellness Institute last sum-mer, and I was treated with stem cell therapy. I noticed results almost imme-diately. With the tremendous increase in the influx of oxygen into my lungs, my health has improved extensively.

I can now actually run much further than I was able to walk a year ago.

“I also had a debilitating knee problem. I couldn’t climb stairs, and despite wearing a brace, the knee would go out on me a couple of times a week. With the improvements in my knee and COPD, I’m now able to do deep knee bends, run up and down steps, and walk several miles a day.

“I will sing the praises of the stem cell therapy I received at Whitaker Wellness to anyone who will listen. It has made a vast difference in my life.”

– James Norman, Corona, New Mexico

Breathing EasyTen years ago, Arlana St. Clair began to experience increasing shortness of breath upon exertion. She was referred to a pulmonologist, who diagnosed her with COPD.

Arlana was shocked by this diagnosis. She had never smoked and had no genetic markers for COPD, but she does live in California’s San Joaquin Valley, which the EPA rates as having the worst air quality in the coun-try. She was prescribed several medications, but the side effects were intolerable, so she was forced to slow down and just deal with it.

Then she heard about stem cell therapy and came to Whitaker Wellness for treatment. Arlana noticed a difference immediately. She was able to walk longer distances, perform more strenuous tasks, and spirom-etry testing showed improved lung capacity. Today she works, does aerobic exercise five days a week, and feels fantastic.

Depression and AnxietyNeurofeedback Relieves a Decade of Depression and Anxiety“I’ve been dealing with depression and anxiety for the past 10 or 12 years. I’ve always been super sensitive and worried about what other people think, but it got to the point that I couldn’t bear to interact with others or even leave the house. I was pretty much a hermit.

“My doctor prescribed antidepressants, which I took for years – until I start-ed reading about the downside of these drugs and stopped taking them. I didn’t feel any difference at all! I looked into alternatives and tried everything I read about, but nothing really helped.

Through my research, I learned about your clinic and thought you might be able to help with all my health problems. So I made an appointment and went to Whitaker Wellness.

“I had a complete workup and was treat-ed with IV vitamins and minerals, bi-oidentical hormones, natural thyroid, diet, exercise, and nutritional supple-ments. Most impressive, however, was neurofeedback. It helped so much that I returned several months later for addi-tional treatment.

“It’s been almost a year and a half since my last visit to Whitaker Wellness, and

I’ve made great progress. I’m much hap-pier, more energetic, and motivated to get out and do things. I volunteer as a mentor for a first grader (I was a teach-er for 35 years) and take care of my two-year-old granddaughter – a huge step for me because I couldn’t have done these things before. My friends and two daughters also notice tremen-dous improvements.

“My stay at Whitaker Wellness was a won-derful experience. Neurofeedback has made me feel calmer, more relaxed, and capable of being a ‘real person’ again.”

– D.J., Texas

“Peace of Body, Mind, and Soul”Nelda and Carvel Mills are a lovely couple from Texas who have made annual visits to the Whitaker Wellness Institute for a number of years. Last year, Nelda was treated with neurofeedback, a biofeedback therapy that helps normalize brainwave patterns. We use it at the clinic to treat anxiety, depression, nervousness, insom-nia, migraines, memory and attention problems, and more, with great results. Here is Nelda’s story.

“When we came to Whitaker Wellness last year, I was at the lowest place I’d been in a long time. Over the past few years, I’d gone through the stress of caring for my first husband during his illness and the grief of his pass-ing. Although I am now happily remarried to a wonderful man, I just wasn’t feeling as well physically or mentally as I had in the past.

“For example, I’ve worked at the same law firm for 20 years, but I would forget the names of clients – and I’ve known some of them for decades. Or I’d miss appointments at the beauty shop, which, as any woman knows, no one forgets. I had taken care of my mother after she had a stroke and was suffering with dementia, and I just couldn’t shake the feeling that, like her, I was developing Alzheimer’s. When I mentioned these things to my physician at Whitaker Wellness, she prescribed a course of neurofeedback.

“After the very first treatment, I noticed a sense of seren-ity that I hadn’t felt in quite some time. Some of it was the relief I felt when the neurofeedback therapist, who is

exceptionally kind and patient, reassured me that I didn’t have Alzheimer’s, but that the activity in certain areas of my brain was out of sync, most likely as a result of the grief, stress, and fear I had been dealing with. I had several treatments, and, after each one, I felt better and better.

“Neurofeedback helped me so much that I found a facility that offered it back home so I could continue treatment. Of all the therapies I did at Whitaker Wellness, neurofeed-back was the most valuable. It gave me lasting calmness and peace of body, mind, and soul.”

– Nelda Mills, Midland, Texas

“After the very first treatment, I noticed a sense of serenity that I

hadn’t felt in quite some time.”

DiabetesEx-Diabetic With AttitudeIn November 2009, Ron Soester was told he had type 2 diabetes. He was surprised by the diagnosis. He was a lit-tle overweight, but he was active, felt pretty good, and had no family history of diabetes. When his blood sugar was retested a few months later with similar results, he was downright alarmed.

Ron returned home that day and found a flier that discussed the Whitaker Wellness Institute’s treatment approach to diabetes. He read it, called the clinic, and came to our Back to Health Program a few weeks later. He was treated with diet changes, a number of supplements, hyperbaric oxygen, and IV nutrients, and was told to step up his exercise – which he did with a vengeance!

One of the ways we encourage our pa-tients to get more exercise, which is es-pecially important for those with dia-betes, is a walking contest. Every week, we distribute pedometers to new pa-tients and ask them to track the num-ber of steps they take every day. We

then tally them up and award a prize to the person who takes the most steps.

Ron walked 200,246 steps. It takes the average person about 2,000 steps to cover a mile, so we we’re talking 100 miles! He won the contest hands down and, in fact, walked far more than the combined total of the second and third placers. He also dropped 16 pounds, his blood sugars completely normalized, and the depression he’d been dealing with for years lifted.

He returned home so fit and energetic that some of the folks in his hometown of Crawford, Nebraska, didn’t recognize him. When they commented on how great he looked, he’d ask if he smelled funny and then reply, “I thought I might because the Whitaker Wellness Institute spoiled me rotten!” Ron con-tinues to do well and says he’s on the longest stretch of happiness he’s had in 39 years. Now that’s a nice compliment.

Once Skeptical, Now a Believer“After following the advice of my phy-sicians for decades, all I had to show for it were more and more prescription drugs. I was originally skeptical about getting off my medications, but I was able to eliminate most of them and still have improvements. Whitaker Wellness has done for me in a few weeks what years of conventional medicine did not.”

– Gerald Schwartz, Winnipeg, Canada

“I No Longer Have Diabetes!”“When I first came to Whitaker Wellness, I was overweight, I had uncontrolled diabetes (my hemoglobin A1c was 12.8!), and I’d had neck pain for years. My doctor started me on therapies for my diabetes, including hyperbaric oxy-gen, which really helped the neuropa-thy in my feet.

“He also recommended the mini-fast with exercise (skip breakfast – or, as Dr. Whitaker says, have breakfast at noon – exercise in the morning, and eat sensibly the rest of the day). My first thought was no way, since I had always been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, I agreed to give it a try.

“Now I’m the mini-fast’s biggest fan. Although I could never stick with other programs like the South Beach diet, I lost 20 pounds in the first few months and, more important, my A1c and blood sugar normalized. I no lon-ger have diabetes! Although I would like to lose more weight, I eventually hit a plateau. Fortunately, my Whitaker Wellness doctor discovered why. I have a thyroid disorder that does not show up on the usual tests or respond to the usual treatment. Now that this is being treated, I’m convinced I’ll reach my weight loss goals.

“I’m also thrilled that my neck pain, which I had for 20 years, resolved

with the chiropractic, acupuncture, prolotherapy, and high-intensity laser treatments I received at the clinic. I’m proud to say that I recently became an advanced certified Gyrotonic trainer, something I’ve wanted to do for years but couldn’t because of the pain.”

– Elizabeth Billups, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Ron was so enthusiastic about Whitaker Wellness and his newfound health that he had this t-shirt made up.

Lost 100 Pounds and Got Life BackKent Moore is a 50-year-old minister from Colorado who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 20 years ago, after he quit a three-pack-a-day smoking habit and gained a substantial amount of weight.

For the next 10 years, he was on various combos and increasing doses of oral di-abetes drugs as his blood sugar rose in tandem with his weight. In 2003, Kent was shifted to insulin, and things went from bad to worse. With every passing year he gained more weight, his blood sugars climbed higher – and, incredibly, his doctor kept upping his insulin dose.

Kent topped out at 341 pounds and 220 units of insulin, yet his blood sugar was still out of control, and he had developed several complications, including neuropathy, kidney disease, hypertension, and sleep apnea. He was rapidly barreling downhill.

At the urging of his father-in-law, a Health & Healing subscriber, Kent come to the clinic in September 2013. When he arrived, he was on two types of insu-lin plus another diabetes med, a statin, and drugs for hypertension, heart dis-ease, heartburn, and pain – 11 prescrip-tions in all! Following our long-standing policy, Kent’s physician took him off in-sulin during his first appointment. His other medications, except for one blood pressure pill, were also discontinued.

Stopping drugs, especially insulin, causes concern among patients because their conventional doctors lead them to believe they’re essential, even lifesaving. As Kent said, “It was a little scary at first. Before, I wouldn’t go anywhere without my insulin. I felt like I had to have it at every meal in order to survive.”

Nevertheless, he got with the program and started on the mini-fast with exer-cise (replacing breakfast with morning exercise and fasting until lunchtime), a low-glycemic diet, and targeted nu-tritional supplements. During his Back

to Health Program at the clinic, Kent lost 30 pounds, and his blood sugar and blood pressure held steady – with-out insulin or oral diabetic drugs.

I spoke to Kent nine months after he returned home:

“I’ve lost more than 100 pounds since I was at the clinic, got off insulin, and started doing the mini-fast. I’ve also modified my portion sizes, and I’m eat-ing healthier. My fasting sugars continue to go down – they’re actually less than when I was on insulin. I do slip occa-sionally. I went to a birthday party and overdid it a little, but even then it was no higher than when I was on insulin.

“I have so much more energy now that I’m off insulin and the other medica-tions. They took the life out of me. I couldn’t even climb the stairs without wheezing. It’s like I got my life back. I have a two-year-old daughter, and I’m now encouraged that I will be able to see her grow up.”

FibromyalgiaMy Fibromyalgia Pain Has Never Returned“I first went to Whitaker Wellness two and a half years ago, after a heart attack and 20-plus years of fibromy-algia pain. My doctor at the clinic weaned me off my heart medications and recommended therapies to ad-dress my pain. After my first session, I was able to sleep the entire night without waking up in pain!

“Further therapy helped me recov-er movement of my head, after 20 painful years of having my head ‘frozen’ in immobility. I am amazed that my fibromyalgia pain has never returned. I’ve done so well that in February, I was able to take a rather arduous trip to Antarctica, the most magnificently beautiful place on Earth.”

Heart DiseaseBack in the Saddle with EECPBob Holtcamp is a veteran of cardio-vascular disease. Heart attacks, strokes, seizures, hypertension, heart failure, nine hospitalizations – you name it, he’s been there, done that. Bob tried ev-erything his doctors recommended, in-cluding an angioplasty and more drugs than he could keep track of, but he continued to go downhill. Debilitating fatigue prevented him from walking

up a flight of stairs without stopping halfway to catch his breath, let alone running his landscaping business.

So Bob and his wife Carol packed their bags and came to Whitaker Wellness. The trip was hard on Bob, who had to be pushed through the airport in a wheelchair. But within days of begin-ning treatment with EECP and other therapies at Whitaker Wellness, he was

up and about, and by the second week, he was, as Carol put it, “bouncing off the walls.”

His blood pressure fell from 156/101 to a normal 122/70. He lost 29 pounds (most of it fluid accumulation caused by a failing heart) and his ejection frac-tion, a marker of the heart’s pumping ability, went from 17 to 38. He left in great spirits, ready to get back to work.

Just Said “No” to AngioplastyFive years ago, Dorothy was rushed to the hospital, diagnosed with a heart attack, and recommended to have an immediate angioplasty. Actually, “rec-ommended” is the wrong word. What Dorothy and her family experienced in that hospital, considered one of the best in Los Angeles, can only be described as systematic, premeditated bullying.

There she was, lying in the ICU, ex-hausted and traumatized by the heart attack she has just sustained but stabilized on medications and out of danger. That’s when Dorothy politely but firmly declined the recommended angioplasty – and that’s when the ha-rassment started. First the cardiologist, then wave after wave of other doctors and nurses who told her she’d go into

“full cardiac arrest,” and ultimately a group of psychiatrists, who insinuated to her family that she was crazy if she didn’t consent. It only stopped when Dorothy’s son, concerned for his moth-er’s welfare and shocked by the disre-spectful doctors and their scare tactics, threatened to physically throw them out of her room.

After her discharge from the hospital, Dorothy came to Whitaker Wellness and was treated with a program of life-style changes, nutritional supplements, and EECP. Within two weeks, she had no more chest pain or shortness of

breath, and by the time she completed her course of EECP, she was off all her heart medications.

Five years later, she is taking no med-ications, has no chest pain or other symptoms of heart disease, she’s main-tained her exercise, diet, and supple-ment regimen, and she feels fantastic. Did Dorothy really need that “immedi-ate” angioplasty? You be the judge.

“I Got My Wife Back”Elaine was frustrated and de-pressed. She could no longer take walks or ride her bike, and she even had to stop and rest while doing housework due to chest pain and shortness of breath. Yet, her doctors back home in Canada told her there was nothing they could do for her and that she’d need to be on a nitroglycerin patch and blood pressure medication for the rest of her life.

A 10-year subscriber to Health & Healing, Elaine remembered read-ing about enhanced external coun-terpulsation (EECP), a noninvasive therapy for cardiovascular disease we’ve been using at Whitaker Wellness for 15 years. She decided to call and make an appointment to come to the clinic for treatment.

After just one week, Elaine’s en-ergy began to rebound and her breathlessness improved. By the end of her EECP course, she was able to resume her normal activ-ities and discontinue her drugs. Elaine is thrilled with her remark-able recovery, and she isn’t alone. Her husband, who accompanied her to the clinic, said, “I got my wife back.”

Heart FailureGoodbye Wheelchair, Hello Life!“For most of my life, I’ve been very healthy. But in 2008, I was diagnosed with con-gestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation, and my life began a downward spiral of medications, hospital stays, threats of impending doom (if I didn’t agree to my doctors’ recommendations), and little hope for a happy and productive future.

“It went from bad to worse after I was hospitalized for pneumonia in 2011. I was so weak that I was unable to get out of a chair without assistance, let alone walk. Even eating made me feel like I’d just run a marathon.

“Then I learned about your clinic. My doctor was concerned I might not sur-vive the plane ride, but I was willing to risk it because I wanted to live, not

merely survive. So my husband and I left for California.

“As soon as I entered the clinic – in a wheelchair because my ejection fraction was a dangerously low 15 percent – I was struck by the healing essence, so unlike the foreboding feeling of a hos-pital. Every person we met at Whitaker Wellness touched our lives; they took the time to listen and talk and really cared about us.

“During our three-week stay, I was treat-ed with hyperbaric oxygen, microcurrent therapy, intravenous nutrients, acupunc-ture, reflexology, natural thyroid, and high doses of coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, and other supplements. The therapies were difficult at first because I was so

weak, but I got stronger every day. By the time I was ready to return to Tennessee, my ejection fraction was up to 37 percent, and I no longer needed a wheelchair!

“That was over a year ago, and I am happy to say I have my life back. I can walk, shop, and even do a little hiking. I’m still on three medications, which my doctor here told me I would need for the rest of my life. But I’m convinced that when I return to Whitaker Wellness for a course of EECP, which I was unable to do before, I’ll be able to discontinue them.”

Lyme DiseaseThe Great ImitatorLyme disease is often called the “great imitator.” That’s because the symptoms of this bacterial infection (Borrelia burgdorferi), which is usually spread through tick bites, can be so diverse that it is often mistaken for a host of other conditions, such as chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, and even hypochondria. It may take years before a correct diagnosis is made, and by that time, symptoms are severe and notoriously hard to treat.

This has certainly been the experience of Nate Brownlee of Falls Creek, Pennsylvania. Three and a half years ago, this active and healthy 29-year-old began experiencing numb-ness and stiffness on his left side. When he started having balance problems as well, he saw a doctor who, after much testing and evaluation, diagnosed Nate with transverse myelitis, an inflammatory disorder of the spinal column. This was the start of a rotating cycle of diagnoses that in-cluded lupus, Devic’s disease, demyelinating polyneuropa-thy, and multiple sclerosis. When steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) – typical treatments for these au-toimmune disorders – failed to help, additional tests were run, and Nate was finally told he had Lyme disease.

Once Nate’s diagnosis was established, he was treated with heavy doses of antibiotics and had marked improvements. The antibiotics were eventually stopped, however, and he immediately went further downhill. By late last year, Nate had minimal use of his left hand, was unable to stand or walk without a cane, and was forced to use a wheelchair at times. His physician was running out of options, so he recommended that Nate come to Whitaker Wellness.

We treated this young man with hyperbaric oxygen, EECP, and intravenous vitamin C and glutathione. After two weeks, he had regained some of his balance and partial use of his left hand, and he was able to walk 50 feet without assistance. Because Nate didn’t have access to these therapies back home, he returned to the clinic six months later for additional treatment.

Today, Nate’s balance and stability are steadily improving. He no longer drags his left leg, and he can walk 100 yards on his own. He is very encouraged by his progress and optimistic about the future. The next time he comes to Whitaker Wellness, Nate promises to bring his brand-new baby girl.

“As soon as I entered the clinic, I was struck by

the healing essence...”

Memory LossReversing Bypass-Induced Memory Loss and Brain DamageFour years ago, Frank Bostwick had triple-vessel bypass. It was the usu-al scenario. He was told that if he didn’t have surgery, he could drop dead at any moment, so he consent-ed. Big mistake. After the operation, he had vision problems, dizziness (he couldn’t bend over without feeling like he was going to fall), and what he described as ”brain fog.“

Frank had read in Health & Healing about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as a treatment for stroke, Parkinson’s, and other neurological disorders. Because his symptoms were similar to those of a stroke, he thought it might help, and he asked his doctors if he could give it a try. It was like talking to a stone wall. Not only did they refuse this treatment

– without suggesting anything else – but they adamantly denied that his issues were in any way related to bypass surgery!

So, earlier this year, Frank enrolled in the Back to Health Program at the Whitaker Wellness Institute, where he underwent a complete workup and was prescribed a personalized nutri-tional supplement regimen, a thera-peutic diet and exercise program, and a course of hyperbaric oxygen.

HBOT is administered by breathing 100-percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This allows oxygen to

dissolve into all fluids in the body, so even damaged tissues with a poor blood supply are flooded with oxygen. Repeat treatments resuscitate injured brain cells, stimulate new blood vessel growth, and promote healing.

For his heart disease, Frank was also treated with EECP, which opens up alternative pathways around arterial blockages and improves cardiovascular health.

After four years of little to no progress, just two weeks of treatment at the Whitaker Wellness Institute

increased Frank’s energy, improved his focus and balance, and sharpened his thought processes.

Today, several months later, he still gets a little dizzy, but he’s now able to read and work on his computer, drive, and do chores around his ranch.

”I may not be 100 percent yet, but I’m pretty darn happy with the 75 percent improvement I made at the clinic.“

NeuropathyNeuropathy is among the most devastating complications of diabetes. Triggered by diabetes-induced damage to the blood vessels and nerves, it causes excruciating pain, disability, and, in more than 86,000 cases per year, amputation, usually involving the lower extremities. We see many patients with diabetic neuropathy at the clinic, primarily because conventional medicine has little to offer besides pain-relieving drugs and wound care.

Although our success rate in treating neuropathy may seem miraculous, it’s really just good medicine. We simply help patients get their blood sugar under control and use therapies that dramatically improve blood flow and oxygen delivery, thereby stimulating the natural healing process.

Avoided AmputationCecil is a gentleman in his 60s with a decades-long history of diabetes. Like many patients with this condition, he has severe neuropathy and problems with his feet. A small blister had progressed to a gaping, gangrenous ulcer, and his doctors back home had amputated all the toes on his right foot in an effort to curb the spreading infection. Two months later, despite intensive, expensive wound care, the ulcer still hadn’t healed, and Cecil was facing a leg amputation.

The thought of total amputation was devastating. Then a friend at church mentioned the Whitaker Wellness Institute, and Cecil came to see us as a last resort. We treated his dia-betic ulcer with sugar dressings and hyperbaric oxygen ther-apy (HBOT). Sugar dissolves in the fluid of an open wound and creates an osmotic environment in which no bacteria can survive. HBOT also dramatically improves wound healing and reduces risk of major amputations.

Within four days, Cecil’s oozing sore began to improve, and today, he is walking around on his own two feet.

Goodbye Cane, Neuropathic Pain“I came to the Back to Health Program because my diabetic neuropathy was so bad that despite taking Lyrica for pain relief, I was miserable. I was only sleeping 2–3 hours a night, I was unable to work because I couldn’t sit for more than an hour at a time due to severe leg pain, and my life was steadily going downhill. The last straw was a family vacation to Disney World where my wife had to push me around in a wheelchair. After that, I made up my mind that this had to change.

“My wife and I came to the clinic in March 2010. When I first arrived, I had to use a cane because I was very unsteady on my feet. But after just four days of undergoing enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), hyperbaric oxygen therapy, microcurrent therapy, and receiving intravenous nutrients, I put my cane away – and I haven’t used it again to this day!

“My family and friends cannot believe the difference in me. I can now walk and do things I hadn’t been able to do for three or four years! I bought a microcurrent machine to use at home for pain relief, and I watch my diet because I never want to be in the shape I was before I came to the clinic. Thank you, Dr. Whitaker, and your wonderful staff for all of your help.”

“I Would Be a Vegetable by Now If it Weren’t for My Stem Cell Treatment”“I have had Parkinson’s for about 10 years. I believe I would be a vegetable by now if it weren’t for my stem cell treatments at the Whitaker Wellness Institute.

“I have gone through many stages of the disease. My bal-ance was poor, I was unable to walk normally, my speech was impaired, and I used to have a fixed stare. After receiv-ing stem cell treatment, all these problems have improved. Though I still have to keep up with the Parkinson’s medicine, I can live an almost normal life. I just finished a project of laying blocks in my backyard. I can’t say it was easy, but I got the job done – thanks to stem cells.

“I would not like to mislead anybody, but I certainly think it’s worth a try, rather than having to depend on others to help you survive. My Parkinson’s doctor thought I was wasting my money on the first session, but after seeing how much stem cells helped me, she encouraged me to have another treatment a year later.”

Parkinson’s DiseaseFrom Walker to WalkingFourteen years ago, Coco was diag-nosed with Parkinson’s disease. Over the years, her tremors worsened and she was unable to get around with-out a walker or a cane – a devastat-ing handicap for this active, vibrant, 55-year-old from Arizona.

During a trip to southern California to visit friends, Coco decided to treat her-self to a day at the spa. While she was there, she was approached by a woman who told her about her best friend’s father, who also had Parkinson’s, and how his treatment at the Whitaker Wellness Institute really helped. Coco Googled the clinic, read about our patients’ experiences with Parkinson’s, and showed up at the clinic bright and early on Monday morning.

After just four days of intravenous glutathione and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), Coco’s gait began to

steady, and her tremors started to subside. After continuing treatment at the clinic, she reported:

“I haven’t used a walker or a cane for months. I’m able to wear shoes with a slight heel, and I’m even dancing again. I went from barely walking to going up and down stairs on my own. If I feel like the benefits of the therapies are wearing off a little bit, I get maintenance treatments, and they keep my symptoms at bay.

“I wish I could thank the lady who told me about all of this. This information changed my life, and I owe her a debt of gratitude.”

Prevention“Don’t Wait Until You’re Sick to Focus on Your Health”Raymond and Suzanne Berg from Minnesota have been coming to the clinic every year for 12 years. They don’t come because they’re sick; they come to stay well. And it has paid off. They’re both enjoying second careers as profes-sional models and actors.

Suzanne: “I had no health problems when we first came to Dr. Whitaker’s clinic, but I was intrigued by his approach. Imagine a doctor prescribing supplements! And what a difference it has made in our lives.

“I have early cataracts, and my ophthal-mologist wanted to do surgery, so I start-ed taking your vision supplement. At a recent exam, she was pleasantly surprised that my eyes are actually getting better.

“And when my local physician recommend-ed vitamin D and fish oil, I told him I’ve been taking both for years and showed him my excellent vitamin D level. He used to pooh-pooh my trips to Whitaker

Wellness, but last year he marveled how most women my age are on 3–5 medica-tions while I am on none.”

Raymond: “When Suzanne indicated she was going to California to see a doctor, I wanted no part of it. I was a healthy but skeptical 60-year-old and thought this was some kind of voodoo vitamin stuff. But Dr. Whitaker’s scientific approach to preventive health convinced me otherwise.

“Whitaker Wellness is way ahead of everyone else and has given us many tests and treatments long before our doctors at home had heard of them. Years ago, the clinic found that my C-reactive protein was high and started me on a program to protect against cardiovascular disease.

“I also learned about the problems with statin drugs, which allowed me to help my 87-year-old mom, who had serious heart failure and was taking a sta-tin. We started her on coenzyme Q10,

and within a month, she was up and about cleaning her house. She recently passed away at age 95.

“I’m so glad we didn’t wait until we were sick to come to Whitaker Wellness. You have helped us ward off future prob-lems. We will be back next year and the year after – hopefully until we are 100.

– Suzanne and Raymond Berg, Minnesota

“Health Is Everything”“I’ve always considered myself fairly healthy, but I came to the realization that I needed to be more proactive about taking care of myself. I was work-ing on reducing my weight and blood pressure when I learned about the Whitaker Wellness Institute from a fel-low high school teacher who had had a wonderful experience at the clinic. So in May of last year, a friend and I enrolled in your Back to Health Program. That was the start of my own transformation.

“After my initial exam and diagnos-tics, I learned that in addition to low thyroid and hypertension, I also had borderline diabetes and a serious case of sleep apnea – I stopped breathing more than 30 times an hour during the night! My doctor explained in de-tail what I needed to do and why and

prescribed several therapies, including nutritional supplements, IV vitamins and minerals, acupuncture, and reflex-ology. I was also taught how to eat right, to take walks after meals, and to follow the mini-fast diet. I had lost 10 pounds by the time I left, so I was motivated to keep going!

“I returned for a tune-up this past sum-mer. I was treated with neurofeedback, and my stress level has dropped sig-nificantly. I also had microcurrent and acupuncture to treat a recent foot in-jury – no more pain! So far, I’ve lost 50 pounds, and as a result, my sleep ap-nea has improved. My blood pressure is now close to normal, and I’m no longer on the brink of diabetes.

“Health is everything. Without it, you can’t enjoy life to its fullest. Eating right, taking the proper nutrients, and utilizing natural therapies have made a world of difference in my health. All the people at Whitaker Wellness have taken such good care of me and have given me a new lease on life!”

StrokeBillie Walked Away From a WheelchairBillie McGee, a charming 81-year-old from Alabama, has had a rough go of it the last few years. She had a se-vere stroke in 2002, and although she eventually learned to walk again, she continued to have balance problems. Three years later, she had a heart at-tack, followed by a quadruple bypass, valve replacement, and a pacemaker. But the worst was yet to come.

In 2008, Billie suffered multiple small strokes that temporarily robbed her of her eyesight, hearing, and ability to walk. Although she recovered to some degree, her balance remained impaired and she experienced occasional diz-ziness. She also had severe pain and numbness in her legs and was treated with vein bypass, with no lasting re-lief. As a result, this once-active wom-an – who was a master gardener, an ac-complished seamstress, and a talented singer – was forced to spend most of her time in a wheelchair.

One thing Billie had in her favor was perseverance and a willingness to work hard. When her doctors back home told her there was nothing more they could

do for her, she decided it was time to pay the clinic a visit. So, accompanied by her sister and daughter, she came to the Whitaker Wellness Institute.

Billie enrolled in our Back to Health Program and was treated with a num-ber of therapies aimed at restoring ac-tivity in the affected areas of her brain, improving circulation, reducing pain in her legs, and regaining function.

To that end, she underwent a course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to

“wake up” damaged neurons along with physical therapy to help restore lost function. She also received neurofeed-back, a form of biofeedback that helps

“retrain” brainwaves, and microcurrent therapy, reflexology, and therapeutic massage for pain relief. She was also prescribed a comprehensive nutrition-al supplement program that addressed all of her conditions.

I chatted with Billie and her family whenever I ran into them at my lec-tures or in the waiting room, and every week I could see her getting better and better. She reported that the pain in her legs was improving and sensation

was returning. The unrelenting fatigue that had plagued her was beginning to lift. She was also feeling steadier on her feet and was walking more and us-ing her wheelchair less and less.

A few days before Billie returned home, I spoke with her and asked how she was doing. She proudly announced that she could now walk to the end of our building and back unassisted. In fact, she was doing so much better that her wheelchair was in the trunk of the car. That’s how seldom she was using it!

Dr. Whitaker with Billie McGee and her daughters – out of the wheelchair!

Hyperbaric Oxygen Returns Function After StrokeA stroke was the last thing Gary Jarvis expected when he went to bed. But the next day, this 64-year-old woke up in a hospital, unable to move the entire left side of his body.

After a week, Gary was moved to a rehab facility. He made some progress, but upon discharge, his left side remained weak and par-tially paralyzed. Unable to walk or drive, he was more or less home-bound – until a close friend who is

a Health & Healing subscriber urged him to go to Whitaker Wellness.

Gary arrived at the clinic in a wheelchair, his strength and balance so poor that he was unable to even stand without assistance. He had limited use of his left arm, and facial paralysis made speaking, eating, and drinking a challenge. So we treated him with IV nutrients, reflexology, and most importantly, hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

His response was dramatic. During his treatment course, his balance rapidly improved, and he regained strength and mobility in his hand and elbow. His facial appearance normalized, his speech became clearer, and he was able to eat and drink without cough-ing and choking. He also graduat-ed from wheelchair to walker. Back home, he eventually swapped the walker for a cane and was able to do more and more of the activities he had enjoyed before his stroke.

Weight Loss“I Can See Myself Staying on This for the Rest of My Life”“Over the past eight years, I put on 30 pounds. I’m tall and carried it fairly well, but it really bothered me. I tried many diets and I’d lose 5–10 pounds, but I’d invariably gain them back. So I decided to try Dr. Whitaker’s minifast program.

“So far, I’ve lost 23 pounds and gone from a size 14 – with a muffin top – to a comfortable size 10! This program has really increased my exercise. Adjusting to no breakfast was hard at first, but now it’s second nature. For lunch, I usually have a salad or protein and no more than five grams of carbs. For dinner, I have whatever I want. That’s important, because I know I will never stick to a diet that makes me want for specific foods.

“I consider myself something of a diet expert, since I’ve tried so many. But this ‘diet’ – if you can call it that – is the first one I can actually see myself staying on for the rest of my life. It’s so easy, and it’s a money saver too, since there are no ‘special’ foods to buy or meetings to attend. My advice for anyone considering the mini-fast with exercise would be to just try it. What do you have to lose? Not money. Not time. Just the extra poundage!”

Sleep ApneaRx for Optimal Health: A Good Night’s SleepEight years ago, Linda Cooper from Ontario, Canada, fell off a ladder and injured her head and neck. Since then, she has faced one health chal-lenge after another, from hearing and vision loss, intolerable itching, and chronic cough to hypertension, diabetes, a mild stroke, and a heart attack. To make matters worse, Linda had severe insomnia. She never got to sleep before 2:00–3:00, and she was so exhausted and unfocused she could barely function.

The dozens of specialists she consult-ed were of little help, so she came to Whitaker Wellness. We treated Linda with a personalized program

of supplements and lifestyle chang-es, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and neurofeedback. Because of her fa-tigue, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, which are closely linked with sleep apnea, she also un-derwent a sleep study.

Linda’s apnea-hypopnea index (AHI, the number of times per hour she stopped breathing for at least 10 seconds) was sky high at 29, and her oxygen saturation level dropped as low as 80 percent. This means she rarely if ever got into the restorative stages of sleep, plus she spent a total of 93 minutes during the night starved for oxygen. No wonder she had problems!

Now that she uses a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device every night, Linda falls asleep within 15 minutes of hitting the pillow, sleeps 8.5–9 hours a night, and wakes up refreshed. Her blood pressure is down, her concentration is improving, and she has more energy than she has had in the past 10 years. Her cough and itching have also disappeared.
