Coming Soon for a Bicyclist Near You…. Over the winter, a group of dedicated citizens and city employees took first steps toward making Staunton a more bike-friendly city.

The establishment of the Staunton Ad Hoc Bicycle Advisory Committee to advise the city followed last spring’s enthusiastic presentation by Ride Staunton to City Council. The advisory committee was appointed in July by City Manager Steve Owen and met every three weeks through February to consider ways in which the city can better accommodate bicyclists.

To guide its efforts, the advisory committee adopted a structure developed by the League of American Cyclists—known as the “5 E’s”— which brings a focus on the subject areas of Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering and Evaluation and Planning. (Further details at http://www.bikeleague.org/content/5-es.)

The Advisory Committee issued its report and recommendations to the City Manager in March, and expects a presentation to City Council in May.

Called Again: An Evening with 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis In 2011, two-time Appalachian Trail thru-hiker Jennifer Pharr Davis wanted to test her limits. With the support of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of volunteers dubbed the “Pit Crew,” Jen hiked, stumbled, and some-times crawled the 2,181 mile A.T. in 46 days (an average of 47 miles per day), becoming the fastest person to hike the trail and the first woman to ever set the mark. And for that, she’s been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, Guideposts magazine, and the CBS Morning Show. But Jen’s story is not about records or numbers; it’s about endurance, faith, and most of all, love. She will be speaking about the many challenges and lessons that present themselves along the trail, showing slides from over 12,000 miles of long-distance hiking which she has completed on six different continents. Jen will also be answering questions about her hiking exploits. After her presentation, she will be signing copies of her new book Called Again: A Story of Love and Triumph, which Kirkus Reviews has called “an inspired exploration of the mean-ing of commitment.” Join us 7pm, Monday, May 19 at the Staunton Public Library for what is sure to be an exciting and inspiring presentation from this world class athlete and wilderness adventurer. Sponsored by: Staunton Parks & Recreation and the Staunton Public Library.

What is the (h)OUR Economy? hOUR Economy is a local economy of friends — those we’ve met and those we haven’t yet. Instead of money, we exchange time. Our online timebank allows members to share their talents with others in the community, and thereby earn “hOURs” that are recorded in the online timebank. In exchange, they can use their hOURs to purchase gardening assistance, cooking classes, business services, wellness and medical care, pet sitting, bicycle repair, and many other local services. In hOUR Economy, everyone’s hOURs are treated equally, and everyone’s contribution is valued. In this section, in lieu of cash payment for the class, you would sign up as a timebank member here: houreconomy.org and pay your instructor directly, in hOURs. This could be your starting point and introduction into the timebank process, and how it works. *Upon registering as a new participant of the timebank, you will receive a complimentary 3 hours to get you started. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it so much, you’ll be recommending this system to all your friends. Come on, give it a shot. The h(OUR) Economy was initially catalyzed by the Staunton Creative Community Fund, a group of local volunteers have now taken the reigns. These classes are a collaboration between the h(OUR) Economy and Staunton Parks & Recreation. For class information, please call Claire at (540) 332-3945. For more information on the (h)OUR Economy and the timebank, please call the Staunton Cre-ative Community Fund at (540) 241-0333.

Stress and the Brain Stress is at the heart of every disorder. Just like rust, stress corrodes whatever container it’s in. Each person’s body re-sponds differently to stress, whether it’s anxiety/depression, digestive problems, heart disease, autoimmunity, or weight gain. So let’s talk about how the brain reacts to stress and what we can do about it! When the brain is regulated, choic-es become less impulsive (especially food choices) and we can mesh with the world instead of busily react to it. Instruc-tor: Anne Buzzelli of Buzz Nutrition, Staunton Public Library, 6pm-8pm on July 29. Price: FREE or 2 hOURS. Please let us know if you are paying in hOURS: (540)332-3945. Register by: July 25

Babe Ruth South East Regional Tournament The Staunton Cal Ripken League, with coordination from the City of Staunton’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Staunton Kiwanis Club, will host the 2014 Babe Ruth Southeast Regional Tournament for the 12 and under age division. The tournament is scheduled for July 17-20, with teams arriving on Thursday and play beginning on Friday. The Southeast Region consists of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. State champions plus the host team, Staunton, will compose the field for the tournament. The tourney will be pool play followed by single elimination. Last year, 10 teams participated. The tournament will be played at the Kiwanis Baseball Complex in Gypsy Hill Park with action on both May Field and Kiwanis Field. There will be no admission charge for fans wishing to watch the games. This is the third Southeastern Regional hosted by the Staunton Cal Ripken League. Each participant will receive a “goody bag” which will include free passes and discounts to local attractions. An event of this magnitude is very costly. Just to host the tourna-ment, the Staunton Cal Ripken League gave the Southeast Region $2,500. Local businesses and individuals can help the league defray some of the costs in several ways, since there is no admission charge. Company banners are able to be hung on the outfield fence of May Field. The banner will be displayed for the entire regular season, the playoffs, invitational tour-naments, the Southeast Regional and through Fall Ball. Businesses can also advertise in the Southeast Regional Program booklet. For more information or to find out how you can be a sponsor, please call Debbie Gregory at (540) 332-3945.
