Presidents Message By Jim Rausch, President of the Friends of Kinder Farm Park I hope you have had an opportunity to visit Kinder Farm Park recently and enjoy all that the Park has to offer. Our Eco-Goat program is working out very well and these hard-working goats are indeed “earning their keep” by eating all of the weeds they can reach within the confines of their ever-moving pen. And they are so much fun to watch! If you have not seen them, be sure to look for them as well as the other livestock in the farm complex. The Friends held a very successful ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 31st to mark the public opening of the recently restored Kinder Family farmhouse. The day was beautiful and we had a great turnout of volunteers, elected officials, and even a few Kinder Family members. The public turnout for opening day was very good as well and we got many compliments on the farmhouse museum, one of three museums at the Park. The Friends have spent the last two and a half years and thousands of volunteer hours restoring the first floor of the farmhouse and furnishing it with period furniture and miscellaneous pieces to make it well worth visiting. I hope you have had an opportunity to visit Kinder Farm Park recently and enjoy all that the Park has to offer.

Our Eco-Goat program is working out very well and these hard-working goats are indeed “earning their keep”

by eating all of the weeds they can reach within the confines of their ever-moving pen. And they are so much

fun to watch! If you have not seen them, be sure to look for them as well as the other livestock in the farm

complex.

The Friends held a very successful ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 31st to mark the public opening of the

recently restored Kinder Family farmhouse. The day was beautiful and we had a great turnout of volunteers,

elected officials, and even a few Kinder Family members. The public turnout for opening day was very good as

well and we got many compliments on the farmhouse museum, one of three museums at the Park. The Friends

have spent the last two and a half years and thousands of volunteer hours restoring the first floor of the

farmhouse and furnishing it with period furniture and miscellaneous pieces to make it well worth visiting. The

house will be open every second Saturday of the month from 11 A.M. until 3 P.M.

On June 9th we sponsored another of our speaker programs, hosting Dr. Sara Via with the University of

Maryland Department of Biology and Department of Entomology. Dr. Via spoke on managing gardens and

and many hands to help on the day of the Festival are what guarantee a super event. We are always looking for

new volunteers for our festival and this is the time to get involved. The Fall Harvest Festival Committee meets

the 4th Wednesday of each month and you and your ideas are welcome!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we hope to see you “down on the farm.”

KKiinnddeerr FFaarrmmhhoouussee OOppeennss By Mike Lowman, Chairman of the FoKFP Historical Society

Almost three years have passed since a group of the Friends of Kinder Farm Park first entered the farmhouse in

mid-2011 and began getting it ready for one of its most ambitious projects ever. The objective of the project

was to restore the first floor of this beautiful old brick house to what it might have looked like during the 1930s

and 1940s.

It would take until January 2012 for the FoKFP Historical Society to get the house ready to actually start work.

Two members, Diane Rausch and John Rubino would play key roles in the restoration efforts. Diane Rausch

was our recruiter and project guide, contacting volunteers before each monthly work party, and lining up

enough tasks to keep our volunteers busy and accomplish the work that needed to be done. We found that this,

coupled with donuts, bagels and drinks (soda, coffee and water) seemed to keep our volunteers returning month

after month.

John Rubino, the owner of Rubino Enterprises, Inc. which had done restoration work at the Benson-Hammond

House stepped up to the task of organizing and directing the work that had to be done. Since our volunteers

were both experienced and inexperienced, John often served as instructor showing folks how to accomplish

tasks, like dressing the brick walls, insulating, installing and mudding drywall, etc.

Originally it was thought that it would take about four to five

years to complete the project, starting with our first work party on

that cold Saturday in January 2012. However, thanks to the great

volunteer turn out and the thousands of hours that they put in, the

restoration was completed in just over two and a half years. On

Saturday May 31, 2014, a gorgeous spring day, we held the

ribbon cutting ceremony and officially opened the first floor of

the Kinder Farmhouse to the public.

That day about 150 people had the pleasure of seeing this third addition to the museums in Kinder Farm Park

which tell the history of the Kinder Family and agriculture in Anne Arundel County. The Kinder Farmhouse

will be opened free to the public on the second Saturday of the month (January through November) from 11:00

AM until 3:00 PM.

As chairman of the Historical Society, I would like to take this opportunity to offer special thanks to the

Thank you to all of our volunteers for their hard work, and especially to those who returned month after

month. They can certainly point at a job well done!

Thank you to the many generous donations of items to the Friends of Kinder Farm Park over the years

that we were able to use to furnish most of the house, and also for the generous monetary donations that

provided funds which enabled us to purchase additional furnishings that were needed.

It is hard to believe how fast the summer is passing. School will start in another month and fall will be here

before we know it. Saturday, October 11th

– 10:00 am to 4:00 pm should be marked on your calendar in bold

print! That is the date and time of the best ever Kinder Farm Park Fall Harvest Festival.

Our committees have been holding monthly planning meetings since March, and are still working on a few new

events and games, but since they are still not finalized, you’ll have to attend to see what we have added. Each

year, we try to improve upon the previous year, while holding onto the favorites, such as hayrides, pony rides,

crafts and games, scarecrow making, pumpkin painting, the corn cannons, as well as demonstrations, food and

craft vendors.

Due to changes in operations at the park and through the efforts of the Friends, there will be more animals to see

this year than we have had for the past several years. This is in large part due to a particular Friends’ member,

Roy Fielder. We are quite grateful to him and his wife, Carrie, for the projects that they have created to bring

more animals to the park.

The Boo Barn will not be a part of the festival this year, but the tobacco barn will be open for tours, as will the

newly renovated farmhouse. If you have not toured them yet, please make a point to do so this year as they

represent the efforts of many to bring to life pieces of the history of the Kinder farm and Anne Arundel County

farming in general.

As always, we are seeking donations of long-sleeved shirts and long pants for making scarecrows. Donations

may be dropped off at the park office between 9:00 to 3:00 pm, except on Tuesdays when the office is closed.

The Fall Harvest Festival is the major fundraiser for the Friends of Kinder Farm Park, the profits of which allow

us to purchase items that the county is unable to provide and provide programs for all to enjoy.

We are also again holding a non-perishable food drive to benefit the Anne Arundel County Food Bank.

Donations will be collected at the entrance.

FFaallll HHaarrvveesstt FFeessttiivvaall ((CCoonntt..)) Our annual festival attendance averages around 10,000 people. This

is a major undertaking that requires approximately 450 volunteers to

operate. For middle school ages and older, please see and use the

volunteer forms that are in this newsletter (on pages 15 through 18) to

offer your help for this event. Service learning hours can be awarded.

Forms should be returned to the park office. We provide breakfast,

lunch and/or a pizza party at the end of the day, depending on the

hours that you are volunteering.

June 7, 2014 was a beautiful sunny day—and Woodside (our spokesfrog)

came out to make lots of new friends at the 3rd

Annual Wooden Nickel

Park 1-K Fun Run and Kid Fun Fest. This year drew more attendance

than previous years—we also had a significant number of returning

participants who had looked forward to the festival this year. Woodside the Spokesfrog

To announce the event, a likeness of Woodside the Wooden Nickel Park Spokesfrog was built at the entrance to

Kinder Farm Park. A wonderful article appeared on-line and in the printed version of the Severna Park Voice

before the event. This year’s Wooden Nickel Park 1-K Fun Run and Kid Fun Fest included random cash prizes

for runners under 12. Owls, snakes, lizards, hawks, snake eggs, fox pelts, several species of squirrels were also

part of the event. The festival also included Wooden Nickel Park’s special brand of fun from frog tossing, duck

pond, bird house painting, and face painting.

So about that mystery — hope you will help — a young woman taking photos, film and

interviewing people — for the press, — her name we believe is Brianne. She took lots of

pictures and film. We were hoping to hear from her. Do you know her; would you have her

get in touch with us? Can you help — do you have any pictures to share?

Additionally, we would like to thank everyone, especially the Friends of Kinder Farm

Park for the help the day of, and in preparation for the Wooden Nickel Park 1-K Fun Run

and Kid Fun Fest.

NNeeww FFuunnddrraaiissiinngg IIddeeaass By Michele Rose, Vice-President Friends of Kinder Farm Park and Chairperson, Fundraising Alternative Committee

The active members of the Friends of Kinder Farm Park are starting to show our age. Unfortunately, that means

that some of us have retired and moved away, others are starting to have health issues and some are just plain

tired.

Therefore, we found it necessary to form a new committee – the Fundraising Alternatives Committee. We have

been charged with finding some new ways to raise funds with fewer volunteers.

The first of our new programs is just getting off the ground. It is an “Honor Box” that has been installed on the

large animal barn – the Cattle Barn. It is a location where people can drop off cash or checks that they would

like to donate to the Friends organization. Since we are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, monies donated are

tax deductible. We’ll be happy to send you a receipt if you attach your name and address to any donation that

you deposit. The box will be emptied on a daily basis by a member of our organization.

Unfortunately, the signage for it has not yet arrived, but you’ll find it next to the “Cattle” information sign on

the Barn.

Secondly, we are in the process of starting another project – the “Buy a Brick” program. Since we have been

lacking a flagpole for the Visitors Center, we have incorporated it into this project. At

this time, we are working out the details and are in the design phase. We are hoping to be

able to offer it by the beginning of October, so please look for details in upcoming e-

mails and newsletters.

Finally, please consider becoming an active member of the Friends. We try to make our

meetings and events fun for all who volunteer, as well as for those who just participate.

Inspired by the book Open Spaces Sacred Places, Master Gardener Bonnie

Pavlak got permission to create a Woodland Garden in Kinder Farm Park,

planting primarily native trees, shrubs, and perennials. The garden is

located at the intersection of the North Gate Trail and the Perimeter Path.

Work began in 2008 clearing debris and invasive vines from the site. Oaks,

holly, maples, tulip tree, wild black cherry, locust, and viburnum were

already present, as was the resident wood chuck. We planted ferns

including Christmas, sensitive, ostrich, marginal shield, lady, holly, royal

and New York Fern; it is perhaps the only place in the park with ferns.

Many grants, especially those from Unity Gardens, plus other grants from

Four River Garden Club, Friends of Kinder Farm Park, and the Chesapeake Bay Trust provided funds for the

purchase of plant material. Many plants are labeled with common and scientific names for identification.

The purpose of the garden is to provide a place to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of nature on one of three

benches donated by Kinder Park, Unity Gardens, and the Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners.

Witch hazel sports yellow blossoms in February, followed by the white flowers of the shadbush. Spring is the

best time of year to see the ephemeral wild flowers blooming, before leaf cover brings shade to the woods.

Mayapple, Virginia bluebells, bloodroot, wild ginger, hellebores, green & gold, trout lily, false Solomon’s seal,

Carolina lupine, mountain mint, bleeding heart, jack-in-the-pulpit, and lily-of-the-valley are well worth the visit.

The long hard winter affected all gardens and gardeners. At the farm house garden tended by the Chartwell

Garden Club, several perennials and shrubs sustained winter damage and a few died from the sustained cold and

wind. Happily, many of our plants have rebounded but the recovery took 4-8 weeks longer than usual. Since

weather conditions in the future will be increasingly unpredictable, gardeners must adapt. Horticulture is

always working to develop vegetables, fruits and ornamentals that are more suitable to current conditions such

as temperature, rainfall, pests and disease. Take advantage of this information

in your garden and learn how you can help your plants in the growing season

and all year long.

Congratulations to the Friends of Kinder Farm Park on the grand opening of

the farm house. The Chartwell Garden Club members who attended the event

were pleased to meet one of the members of the Kinder family who said she

was delighted to see peonies in our garden. She remembers that peonies in

particular were always part of the family garden.

SSuucccceessssffuull aanndd SSuussttaaiinnaabbllee GGaarrddeenniinngg iinn aa CChhaannggiinngg CClliimmaattee By Lindsay Barranco, Board Member Friends of Kinder

On June 2, 2014 Dr. Sara Via spoke at the Kinder Farm Park Visitors

Center on the topic, “Successful and Sustainable Gardening in a Changing

Climate.” Dr. Via is a professor of biology at the University of Maryland,

College Park, has a background in evolutionary genetics and previously

taught at Cornell University. Dr. Via stressed that gardeners will need to

adapt to a warming climate and that certain sustainable gardening practices

can be utilized by the gardener. Below were some of the points presented:

NASA maps the earth’s warming. This has been the 8th

warmest winter globally and since the summer

of 1951 temperatures have shifted, creating warmer oceans. Global temperatures track increased carbon

dioxide in the atmosphere.

Gardens are affected in the following ways: there are more extremely hot days and fewer cooler nights.

There have been warmer winters. We’ve experienced heavier downpours of rain AND more possibility

of draught.

Warmer temperatures mean that: there are earlier blooming dates; heat stress can adversely effect

pollination. Breeding heat tolerant vegetables is essential (try a variety that is typically planted further

south in warmer climates).

Warmer winters mean pests, plants and weed diseases have a better chance of overwintering. Insect and

pest range may expand (i.e. wax scales are now in New Jersey). Plants and their pollinators are

increasingly becoming “out of sync: meaning that plants may bloom when pollinators are not present to

pollinate.

-Heavy downpours are increasing. This can delay planting dates, deluges of rain can washout or

contaminate crops, plants are killed off, disease increases and soil depletion occurs.

WHAT CAN A GARDENER DO?

1. Improve drainage in your yard/garden

2. Monitor food safety (vegetables/crops)

3. Plant drought tolerant plants and heat tolerant plants

The fifth annual Anne Arundel County Fair Poultry Princess Contest will take place on Wednesday, September

10th at the county fairgrounds in Crownsville, Maryland. The mission of the Poultry Princess Contest is to raise

awareness about poultry by educating the public about various types and breeds of poultry and basic care;

however, it is not a requirement that contestants own poultry to compete. This contest offers young ladies from

ages10-15 an opportunity to participate by submitting a resume, written essay, and interacting with a panel of

judges through a "fishbowl" question and an interview. Applicants must reside in Anne Arundel County. The

newly crowned Poultry Princess will be awarded prize money, crown, and official sash, and will represent the

county fair and the poultry industry throughout the fair and year.

Two Friends Members Receive Ron Blake Awards Diane Rausch and Mike Lowman were recipients of 2014 Anne Arundel County Ron Blake Outstanding

Volunteer Awards. This award program was initiated in 1985 to recognize the achievements and service of

volunteers who support the Department of Recreation and Parks. The Recreation Advisory Board selects the

award recipients from nominations submitted by the recipients’ peers.

Diane Rausch is a member of the FoKFP Historical Society was very active in all

aspects of the group. She is our resident Kinder historian, contacting and

interviewing Kinder family members and other county farming families to help

tell their stories. Diane also plays a vital role in recruiting volunteers and working

on the restoration of the Kinder Farmhouse Since her and husband, Jim Rausch,

the FoKFP president were going to be out of town for the regular award

presentation, Diane received her award at the May 31st Kinder Farmhouse Ribbon

Cutting ceremony.

Mike Lowman is an FoKFP Board member, editor of this newsletter,

administrator for the annual Kinder Farm Park Photo Competition and chairman

of the Historical Society. As editor of the newsletter he is the “unofficial” FoKFP

photographer for park events throughout the year. Additionally, Mike also serves

on the Fall Harvest Festival committee setting up the volunteer food service for

the event. Mike received his award at the Ron Blake Award ceremony on June 4th

held at Old Mill High School.

Former Friends of Kinder Farm Park recipients of the Ron Blake Outstanding

Volunteer Award include Joe Miller, Lisa Willis, and Roy Fielder.

PHOTO COMPETITION RULES AND ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS

1. The categories for this photographic competition are: Flora (flowers, trees, plants, etc.); Fauna (all animals including fishes, birds, insects, etc.); Landscape; and, People in Kinder Farm Park.

2. Photos must be taken within the boundary of Kinder Farm Park during between Nov. 1, 2013 and October 31, 2014.

3. Entrants may submit up to a total of four photos in the competition, either as digital images or prints in color or black and white.

Photographs can be submitted in digital format (preferably JPG), with a maximum of 10mb per email.

Photographs submitted in print form should be no larger than 8” X 10”. Note that they will be digitally scanned for judging purposes.

4. This competition is intended to encourage amateur photography in our county parks. Photography is just one of the many activities enjoyed by park visitors. Contest entries will not be accepted from professional photographers.

5. All entries must be original work and must not have been previously published. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all photos entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in the entries.

6. Each entry must be marked with or accompanied with an email that includes:

The photographer’s: o Name and address, o Telephone number, o Email address, and o Photograph title.

A description of where and when the photo was taken.

The category In which each photograph is being entered (only one category per photo)

Note: Personal details will only be used for the purpose of administering the competition and will not be published or provided to any third party without your permission.

7. Entries can be submitted in two ways:
