The Middletown Arts Center’s Summer Arts Camp offers creative activities all summer long in our beautiful, air conditioned facility with our caring and talented staff.

Children can explore the arts in affordable morning and afternoon sessions that can be joined together to create a full day experience. Campers who enroll in a morning and afternoon camp bring their lunch and a supervised lunch period is included.

Membership is optional and benefits of membership are discounted rates on classes, camps, and workshops. The MTCAC is the non-profit 501(c)3 organization that operates the Middletown Arts Center. Art Explorers Half Day Program June 17–21 and June 24–28 Get a jump on summer with this fun art adventure that will explore different types of art! From colorful collage to awesome landscapes, there’s something for all!

Hip Hip Hooray! USA! July 1–3 *CLOSED JULY 4, 5 Celebrate the 4th of July as only Miss Laurie can with patriotic arts and crafts. Create flags, fireworks, stars, stripes, and use lots of red, white, and blue!

Beach Party July 8–12 Jump into an ocean full of underwater fun! Sandy beaches, sparkling waves, colorful fish, and beautiful seashells await you in this week with lots of great art activity.

Furry Friends July 15–19 A week devoted to your favorite pets! Paint stuffed animals, Purr-fect pet portraits, clay creations, and scratch art critters. Rainbow Magic July 22–26 Make magnificent art based on the beauty of the rainbow. Lots of colorful, imaginative fun with paint, clay, and more. ROY G BIV to the max!

Do Art, Get Messy, Have Fun July 29–August 2 A week full of amazing art projects! Make your own slime, explore mixed-media, dig into clay. Lots more fantastic art fun.

Surfin’ Dudes and Mermaids August 5–9 Back by popular demand, this island week will include new projects of surf board creations, iridescent mermaids, palm trees, tiki art and lots of creative fun.

Fireflies, Frogs, and Fairies August 12–16 A magical art adventure exploring garden delights. Glow-in-the-dark insects, colorful patterned frogs, and iridescent fairy wings are just the beginning.

Jungle-Mania August 19–23 From parrots and macaws to lizards and snakes, this week’s art is all about the beauty of the jungle!

Summer Art Bash August 26–30 Enjoy the last week of camp as we create masterpieces celebrating all that is summer.

Artistic fun designed to stir the imagination and bring out the creative best in every child. Each week is different and will include age-appropriate activities relating to the themes below - children will draw, paint, construct, create, and collaborate. Each week will include a variety of materials including watercolor, acrylic paint, different kinds of clay, pastels, pencils, and lots of craft materials. Children bring their own snack. *Activities will vary between morning and afternoon for campers who wish to remain in the art program full day.

Before and After Care with the creative and beloved Miss Maria and friends is available at $7 per hour starting at 7:30 am and running until 6 pm.

It’s Raining Cats and Dogs July 8–12 Enjoy creating adorable “Pet Portraitures,” using, clayboards, scratch paper, canvas, colored pencils, acrylics, watercolor and more. Learn to sketch, follow patterns, and be proud of all your creations. Gilded WatercolorsJuly 15–19 Using high quality materials, students learn to sketch and paint a diary of, “What I did over the Summer 2013”. Paintings will be ready to hang or display. Their sketches will also be part of their sketching diary, which we will bind together to make it extra special. Painted Pillowcases July 22–26 Bring your own white or pastel pillowcases (2), new or used and we’ll create a special pillowcase for sleep-overs or home use with fabric paint that will last a lifetime. Washer & dryer friendly. Many patterns, and subject matter to choose from.

Exploring the Seven Seas July 29–August 2 This 3D adventure will take your child around the world to learn about all that’s beneath the seven seas. We will use canvas, many kinds of papers, model magic, markers and more, to make each ocean memorable!

Stepping Stones August 5–9 Embellish your garden with your one of a kind stepping stones! We will be using plaster of Paris and other materials to create these stones, designed with footprints, handprints, shells, beads and other embellishments to treasure for a lifetime.

Re-Use and Recycle with Glass and Crayons August 12–16 With melted, recycled crayons, your child will mold and intertwine the crayons on a recycled glass bottle to make one of a kind vases for “summer flowers” or display. Create designer glass jars with air-dry clay as well. Great for precious keepsakes, or piggy bank change. *Please bring in jars and bottles - they will be collected in the office with a box marked Laura French. *Used crayons are also gladly accepted.

It’s a Paper Trail August 19–23 Have FUN using many kinds of papers and surfaces to create amazing land and seascapes, using many kinds of paint, pastels, markers, and experimenting with kosher salt, saran wrap, wax, and more as we create texture and design to make one of a kind masterpieces.

Needlepoint Placemats August 26–30 We will create unique placemats by choosing from many colors and textures of yarn. Using basic stitches and plastic canvas, these placemats will surely be a work of “ART!” *Donated any skeins of yarn will be appreciated, but not necessary.

A fun artistic time in the world of gaming. Huge gamer party at the end of the week. Star Wars Appreciation Week July 8–12 Plenty of cosmic art and space crafts, model ship building, and an awesome “gamer” day all in the honor of George Lucas! Sea n’ Things! Deep Sea Doodlizm! August 12–16 Surf’s up! Celebrate the beautiful world under the sea with magnificent WATER colors. Pirates, Sharks, Piranhas, …and plenty of Island Art to round off the artistic fun.

Budding musicians will hone their craft by creating original music, and will perform live at one of Miss Sherri’s Live TV concerts filmed in our 250 seat state-of-the-art theater. Students will explore the process of song writing from composition, form, lyric writing, rhythm, harmony, melody, and learn what makes a hit a hit. Piano and guitar accompaniment will be available. SUMMER MUSIC CAMP WITH MISS SHERRI (Ages 3-11)Monday-Friday, 8:30-11:30 am Members $130 Non-Members $142Fun and frolic abound as we make music, sing, and move. Students develop social skills as they enjoy instrument play, crafts, story time and dramatic expression. Campers may bring a lunch. No previous musical training necessary. Each week on Friday campers will have the opportunity to perform. Wear comfortable clothes. Themed weeks as follows:

Rockin’ Choo Choo Camp July 8–12 Campers explore locomotion through creative movement and music, singing train songs, dancing and drumming. Campers are propelled to chug along and even do a little fun work on the railroad. Honey Child Music Rock Star Camp July 15–19 Campers will shine bright while learning Miss Sherri’s award winning songs as well as learning about astronomy and the world around them. We will encourage leadership, collaboration, and team work. Cowgirl & Cowboy CampJuly 22–26 Round up the kids and saddle up your horses for a wild west Camp at the MAC that’s sure to be the best hoe-down in town. Sing some of your favorite traditional ditties like, “Old McDonald”, “Home on the Range” and even some originals.

Let’s Pretend Camp August 5–9 Imaginations soar as we sing about whatever we fancy. Let’s pretend to be a silly monkey, a noble ruler, a caring Doctor, a five star Chef, a T- Rex or even a knight in shining armor. Children RULE in this fun-filled creative experience.

Pirates & Lassies Camp August 12–16 Ahoy me Ma-ties... RRRRRrrrrrr is the letter of the week in this treasure hunting, deep sea diving adventure filled music camp! We will sail the Seven Seas and follow the treasure map in search of the best Pirate songs of the century.

Go Go Green Camp August 19–23 Mindful campers will learn about the earth, natural habitats, and ways to protect our beautiful planet and it’s eco-systems. We will create instruments and crafts using re-cycled materials, sing green songs and play together as a band!

Stomp, Rock & Swing Camp August 26–30 Skip, jump, swirl, twirl or stomp your little feet with Miss Sherri & friends. Be amazed at the energy, enthusiasm & confidence we encourage in campers. We equip them with social skills, movement activities, creative play, music and some of the tools they need to blossom into Peace builders.

BLACK ROCKET PRODUCTION CAMPSMembers $160 Non-Members $170 No prior experience is needed. At the end of each camp, students will be able to access their work on a password protected website to share with friends and family! All Black Rocket Production classes are designed to mirror real life experiences and the collaborative nature of the creative process. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

FX: Learn the Science Behind Special Effects (Ages 8-12) June 24–28, 9 am-12 noonIn this class everything is not what it seems! Become a master of illusion by learning the age-old scientific techniques used by Hollywood masters to create movie magic. You will experiment with visual and mechanical effects as well as using Green Screens and CGI or computer generated imagery. Each student will finish the program with a digital representation of their FX project which will be hosted on a password protected website to share with friends and family. Mobile Movie Maniacs (Ages 8-12) June 24–28, 1-4 pm Share your ideas with the world! The mobile revolution has allowed filmmaking and video to be done by anyone-anywhere. This course is designed for young adults who have the desire to focus on creating short films meant for a You Tube Audience. Students will begin by collaborating learning the basics of storytelling, but then each participant will create their own short story or idea to be filmed and edited. Once the film trailers are complete publish your work and watch as it goes viral! DROIDS and BOTS (Ages 8-12)July 1–3, 9 am-12 noon (3-day camp – prorated)From R2-D2 to the Roomba. In this cutting edge class you will learn the basics of task robotics including the assembly process, principles of gears, mechanics, sensors, and sound activation. Each day will bring a different concept and a new challenge as you build a variety of different task oriented robots with a partner.

Junkyard Warriors (Ages 8-12)July 1–3, 1-4 pm (3-day camp – prorated)In this eco-friendly S.T.E.M. program,students will recycle common everyday items to create motorized mechanisms and racers. The program is divided into a series of challenges where students will compete to accomplish specific tasks and goals. Each challenge combines environmental principles, physics, and basic elements of design and engineering. After mastering the basic concepts, students will face a final challenge to earn the title Junkyard Warrior and become protectors of the realm.

LEGO® Films & Animation! (Ages 8-12)July 8–12, 9 am-12 noonMake your LEGO®s come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGO®s and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. Students will develop research and writing skills as they learn about scale, energy, and city planning. Student designs will be posted on a special class website. App Attack! Make Your 1st Game App (Ages 8-11) July 22–26, 9 am-12 noon (Ages 11-14) July 22–26, 1-4 pmExplore the App universe and create your own mobile application or mobile game! Students will explore the world of phone-based and tablet applications. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and games, you will also see firsthand how the world of App’s publishing functions. Make Your First Video Game! (Ages 8-12)July 29–August 2, 9 am-12 noonA one of a kind class that shows you the crucial keys to designing your first 2D game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics and elements, music and sound, software, and simple coding are some of the concepts that we’ll explore as you really get into the game because you made it yourself! No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student created games will be available on a password protected website to share with family and friends. Software/games are only compatible with PC computers. Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15 conversion fee. With the digital revolution everyone can rock out even if you have never played an instrument! Create songs, podcasts, or music videos using tools like Garage Band and other mass media

software, explore the basics of song composition, editing tracks, and create a music video. Student created songs, music video, and podcasts will be hosted on the Black Rocket student website to share with friends and family. Students should bring earphones with them to class. NEW! App Adventures! The Next Level (Ages 11-14)August 19–23, 1-4 pmContinue your quest to make the next viral app! Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! All students will create a mobile game app and explore more in depth programming concepts. 2013 SUMMER CAMPS

INDUSTRY FILM SCHOOL SUMMER CONSERVATORY PROGRAMJuly 22 through August 9thMonday through Friday from 10 am until 4 pm Tuition for the entire course: $2200 for three weeks (includes Lab and Equipment Fees)

The summer program is open to all students ages 13 and older. This program is designed for responsible high school and college students who have a serious attitude toward film-making as their primary focus during the program. This course is designed as a complete immersion in the collaborative process of filmmaking. Students will work together through the entire process of script development, pre-production, directing, shooting, and editing. The resulting film will be shown in the Middletown Arts Center’s state-of-the-art theatre and students will receive a DVD of their films.

Week 1: Film Studies10 am-12 noonStudents and faculty engage with all forms of moving-image culture including film, still photography, television, and digital media. Teaching students to think historically, theo-retically, and analytically about film media within the broad context of humanistic studies. Week 1: Writing the Short Screenplay 1-4 pm Students will learn the essential elements of screenwriting from developing a good idea to creating a treatment. Final scripts will be shot in Week 2 and edited in Week 3. Topics covered for this portion of the class will include developing the character, plot, structure, themes, goals and conflicts, flashbacks, dialogue, proper format, scene analysis and how to pitch your script. Stu-dents attending this course will have access to computers and screenwriting software, but are welcome to bring their own laptops.

Week 2: Production10 am-4 pm Professional filmmakers work with students through the technical and creative process of shooting, directing, and editing their own projects while participating as crew members on other students’ projects. This course focuses on developing skills needed to create an independent short or feature film for distribution as well as a strong portfolio for college admissions. This class teaches students the essential elements for submitting to festivals and competitions. Past and current students have won numerous local and national awards for their work.

Week 3: Editing 10 am-4 pm Avid Certified Editors will take the students through the post production process form capture or ingesting to output, encoding, and mastering to DVD. Students will edit the footage they shot in the 2nd week of this course. Emphasis is on terminology, organization, pacing, and timing. Each group’s finished film is screened at the final showcase.
