Rate Yourself

How comfortable are you with incorporating the use of Web 2.0 technology tools such as Google Applications and blogs and wikisinto your classroom instruction?

Rate your comfort level on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest level of comfort.(You don’t have to worry about sharing. This is reflective.)

The Essential Question Is:

1. How can 21st century technology tools be used to make the teaching and learning experiences meaningful?

How Can Teachers Use Web 2.0 Tools and Technology In The Classroom?

In The Past We Have Asked The WRONG Question:

How can teachers make teaching and learning fun?

What Can Google Do For You?

Sharing

Using Google In The Classroom!

Some ideas on how to use Google in the classroom…?• Use Spreadsheets for collaboration.

• Consider using a Table when you are working in large numbers in a Google Document.

• Use for collaborative homework.

• Have several students work on a presentation to be delivered during the hand-in lesson.

• Publish a presentation for protected sharing.

• Using Google Forms, survey your students in order to get information to drive instruction.

• Use Google Docs for Reading Responses because there can be an ongoing conversation, aided by the extra motivation of working online.

• Use Google Docs for students to buddy edit information or reports (or other type of writing). Students share their document with their writing buddies. The teacher can be a collaborator and they can assist in the process as well, long before the product is finished.

• Use a single shared spreadsheet for the whole class. Add the children's names in the first few columns. Add data information along the column headings. Pooled data could then be analyzed, averaged, charted and explored.

What Can Google Do For You?

Know your limits when using Google Documents

There are; however, limits on the number of collaborators that can work simultaneously in a document for each type of Google Document.

10 people can edit a Presentation at the same time.50 people can edit a Spreadsheet simultaneously.50 people can edit a Document at the same time.

There is a limit of 200 combined viewers/ collaborators for all of the different types of Google Docs.

Individuals can use a Google Group to learn about & acquire information about almost anything imaginable.

For example… •Teachers can use Google Groups to collect assignments, hold discussions, hold Socratic seminars, monitor projects, form cooperative learning groups, etc.

Using Blogs•Posting assignments. (Not blogging)

•Journaling, i.e. “This is what I did today.” (Not blogging)

•Posting links (Not blogging)

•Links with descriptive annotation, i.e. “This site is about…” (Not really blogging either, but getting close depending on the depth of the description.)

•Links with analysis that gets into the meaning of the content being linked. (A simple form of blogging.)

Using Blogs•Links with analysis that gets into the meaning of the content being linked. (A simple form of blogging.)

•Reflective, meta-cognitive writing on practice without links. (Complex writing, but simple blogging, I think. Commenting would probably fall in here somewhere.)

•Links with analysis and synthesis that articulates a deeper understanding or relationship to the content being linked and written with potential audience response in mind. (Real blogging)

•Extended analysis and synthesis over a longer period of time that builds on previous posts, links and comments. (Complex blogging)

Idea on how to integrate technology into what you and your students do in the learning process…

Example that students can blog about:

What is your opinion about school uniforms? Should schools require uniforms? Do you believe they help maintain classroom discipline? Do they have an effect on school violence? Share your thoughts.
