The Salvation ArmyThe Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love for God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a wide array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. About 83 cents of every dollar raised is used to support those services in nearly 9,000 communities nationwide.

“ Brenden (9 years old) is excited to come to Mighty Kroc Wrestling each week. He looks forward to seeing the other kids and getting to learn more about wrestling from Coach Bazer. I like that Brenden is participating in activities at the Kroc Center and getting exercise. ”

Dave S., Brenden’s Grandfather

“ At 70 years old I decided to overcome my fear of water. My instructor was very patient, helping me to first learn to put my face in the water and then finally getting me to jump in from the side! My husband came to my swim lesson graduation and many people in the Kroc Center knew I was taking lessons so when I finished my instructor gave me a certificate that says “Donna has learned to swim”, I proudly display it in my office on the wall.

I then started swimming laps three times a week. But, because of a lung problem, I was having problems breathing when swimming and my son suggested I use a snorkel. I thought it would be cheating but he asked “Cheating who?” So I started using a snorkel. To keep track of my laps I use clothes pins, moving them to the side to denote laps. I like the Kroc Center because I can come anytime I want and swim laps. There is always a lane open. I visit with the water aerobics people – they’re encouraging and all of the lifeguards, too. My advice to those who haven’t learned to swim, try, try to take lessons. Once you learn, it’s worth it. It’s kind of a challenge, a personal challenge that the elderly can say I’m not old, I learned to swim. I can do things. And I feel good. ”

Donna K., Kroc Center Member

“ We have taken grandchildren and their friends swim-ming many times. They love the pools, slides, lazy river and lap pool. I love that the pools and the facility are always spotless! It is a fabulous spot for families in Omaha! ”

“ At camp, I like when we do dance. Dancing is really fun and I couldn’t imagine my life without it. Camp Kroc is so much fun and I can’t wait until next summer. It was truly amazing. I’m bummed out that I only have one year left. I am IN LOVE with this place!! ”

“ When I think about learning about God, I don’t always think about having fun. But Kroc Church provides interaction and activities that involve my wife and I, our adult children, and our grandchildren too! At the end of our experience, we had each written a card of encouragement to someone on our prayer list. Now that is faith in action! I can’t wait for our next chance to have fun as a whole family while doing something spiritual. ”

FloAt4liFe lessons AGeS 1 - 3

Float4Life is a water safety program that teaches young children, ages 1-3, how to roll on their backs (like an Otter!) so they can breathe, float and reach the side of the pool until help arrives. Those precious seconds can save a life! Sessions include 8 lessons, each 15 minutes long. These “mini” lessons maximize the short attention span of toddlers while gradually increasing the child’s comfort level in the water through personalized one-to-one instruction. The program is a partner-ship between the Omaha Kroc Center and the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation.

AdAptive sWim lessonsAdaptive Lessons are geared towards persons with special needs. The swim instructor uses techniques and in-water activities adapted to fit the individual’s physical/specific needs to help them learn and improve skills, as well as reach their personal goals. 8 lessons per session.

water safety for toddlers

“Too Brief Here On Earth, But His Impact Will Last Forever…” Josh the Otter was created in honor of Joshua Collingsworth, a 21/2 old little boy who was lost to a drowning accident in June of 2008 in Lincoln, Ne. His parents believed they had all the pool safety barriers in place but did not spend enough time talking to him about never going near the pool unless mom and dad were with him. During a family gathering he was briefly out of sight, went to fill his brother’s squirt gun, lost his balance and fell in the pool. Josh the Otter’s goal is to educate all children that water is fun but only with an adult. The Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation is dedicated to water safety and life saving programs like Float4Life.

new! CreAtinG sAFetY: sexuAl AssAult preventionSelf-defense goes beyond physical tactics in the prevention of sexual assault and other forms of violence. Part of good defense is knowl-edge and it starts with understanding the dynamics of sexual assault. It is important to identify the many forms of sexual violence and how everyone in our community can work to prevent it from occurring. This workshop offers information on the types and prevalence of sexual vio-lence, shines a light on some of the myths and talks about how sexual trauma impacts the brain and our responses. We will also discuss local resources and practical information in helping yourself and others if you experience sexual violence. This class, offered through the Domestic Violence Council, requires a 10 participant minimum to be held.

about The Salvation army Kroc Center

In January of 2004, Joan Kroc, wife of the McDonald’s restaurant chain founder Ray Kroc, left a gift of $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army to build and operate commu-nity centers around the country. Joan’s vision was that people in underserved areas would be given access to a high quality facility with a variety of programs so they might discover their natural gifts and talents. Kroc Centers are now located in 24 cities, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico!

The Omaha Kroc Center, which opened in the fall of 2009, is one of six located in The Salvation Army’s Central Region. It was made possible through both the generosity of Ray and Joan Kroc as well as the Omaha community. Our Kroc Center currently serves approximately 3,500 members. The facility, programs and events are also open to the general public. In addition, groups and businesses rent the Kroc Center for a wide variety of professional meetings and personal events.

a Community that Cares: Positive Youth Development

Do you remember the first friend you made in grade school? Or maybe it is easier to remember your favorite teacher or neighbor...what made him or her so special? The simple act of taking time to make a new friend or express interest in the life of a young person can have a larger impact than you realize.

As young people develop, each individual still needs attention, acknowledgment, encouragement and positive relationships with adult role models. These things empower young people to make positive choices as they grow up.

Research shows intergenerational relationships are one of the most important assets a young person can have. The Kroc Center exists so our community has a place to form inspira-tional relationships, and we encourage you to positively impact the life of a young person today.

At the Kroc Center, we are committed to developing a community that cares for children and youth. Learn more about simple, intentional ways that you can partner with us to develop and transform young lives by contacting Lt. Judith Fetzer, Officer for Youth Development at 402-905-3521 or [email protected]. Training for parents, teachers, and community leaders as well as volunteer opportu-nities within the Kroc Center are only a phone call away.

Dear Members and Friends of the Kroc Center:

“The Skies declare the glory of God, the works of his hands are his handy work.” Psalm 19:1

I often enjoyed watching clouds go by on a summer day or the rich color a sunrise or sunset brings. God’s handiwork often inspires creativity in our own lives.

Summer brings a sense of freedom and joy with warm sun rays and gentle breezes. Most of us welcome summer because it provides us the opportunity to enjoy outside activities and have extended days of leisure and recreation. After a long winter being cooped up inside, we rejoice in the warmth that a summer day brings to our life. Summer is a wonderful time of the year to try new things and create memories for the whole family.

I was always challenged to win the war against summer boredom. The words from my children: “I’m bored there is nothing to do.” Always sparked a creative idea to take them swimming, to play ball, or make up a fun family activity. Whether it is rain or shine, there is always something for families to do this summer at the Kroc Center. Come and check out the variety of summer activities for you and your family:

These are just a few ideas to provide fun and exciting programs for families and youth in our community to help fight summer boredom and discover new possibilities together. I invite you to come and make the Kroc Center a rich place of discovery this summer.

“Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done...” Psalm 40:5

What wonderful works of God will you be praising this summer?
