YMCA CAMP Y-KODA MISSION STATEMENTYMCA Camp Y-Koda promotes responsible stewardship of our environment and enhances participant quality of life by offering hands-on education opportunities.

CAMP Y-KODA ANNUAL SUPPORT CAMPAIGNThe Annual Support Campaign provides scholarships for financially challenged and at-risk youth who wish to experience summer camp. Your support makes a positive difference in the lives of children and families in our community. To make a donation, please contact Jeremiah Dentz at [email protected] or visit our website at sheboygancountyymca.org/camp-y-koda.

PARENT HANDBOOK & CAMP RESOURCESsheboygancountyymca.org/camp-y-kodaVisit our website to find our 2021 Parent Handbook and Camp Resources page. Our resource page includes everything you need to know to get your child ready for camp. You’ll find helpful tips on our policies, what to pack, information on our sleepover and more! We’ve included specific tips on Pee Wee Camp, Day Camp, Specialty Camps, Resident Camps and Adventure Trips.

When you visit our Camp Resources page, you’ll find a copy of the Parent Handbook, along with downloadable documents such as: the camp brochure, registration forms, state licensing forms, waiver forms, detailed schedules, events and more.

SOCIAL MEDIA - CAMP PHOTOSAt camp, we love to take photos of your campers having a blast and of our camp groups all day long! Camp photos will be uploaded to our Facebook page and some may be posted on our Instagram account.

These photos will be uploaded during the week of or 1-2 weeks after each camp week. Find our camp photos faster by searching for our 2021 official hashtags: #CampYKoda and #SummerCamp2021.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR I’m sure one of the biggest questions you all have is, “What will summer camp at Y-Koda look like in 2021?” While I do not possess a crystal ball, I can tell you our plan is to offer a full slate of camps without the restrictions that were in place during the difficult, yet successful 2020 season.

We learned A LOT in the last year about how to navigate the pandemic and how to operate our programs in a manner that provides a safe and rewarding experience to our campers. We are confident we will be able to expand upon what we’ve learned in order to provide your campers the FULL experience.

That is not to say we are simply moving forward as if the pandemic is over, throwing all caution to the wind. You can expect enhanced sanitizing and cleaning. We may require masks while indoors depending on the mandates in place at the time. There may be temperature checks and other strange things that the pandemic brought us; like all the drinking fountains being turned off. Those are the unknowns, and we can easily work with those as we all have for the past several months.

What we do know is that kids need camp this summer! They need fresh air and the absence of screens. They need to run, and play, and swim, and sing! And in my humble opinion, they need it more than ever. As the parent of four school aged children, I know that our decisions on what we sign our kids up for during these trying times are personal. We want our kids to be able to interact, but we want to keep our families and our community safe. I do believe that summer camp is one of the safer places you can send your child, but I wholeheartedly understand that is a decision only you can make.

If you have any questions on specific protocols or practices we plan to implement this summer, please visit our webpage sheboygancountyymca.org/camp-y-koda or give me a call directly at 920-467-6882.

JEREMIAH DENTZ • [email protected] DIRECTORJeremiah started working for Camp Y-Koda in 2001 after earning his Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Education from UW-Stevens Point. Jeremiah believes strongly in the value of outdoor experiences as part of a healthy childhood and works to ensure Camp Y-Koda provides those experiences to everyone. He enjoys his job because he knows camp is impacting young lives in a positive way and providing life-long memories. He loves seeing exhausted, dirty and smiling faces at the end of a full day of playing outside.

SARAH DEZWARTE • [email protected] OF EDUCATIONSarah has a degree in Biology and Elementary Education, a graduate certificate in Leadership in Natural Resources from UW-Stevens Point, and a Master’s Degree in Educational Policy and Community Engagement from UW-Milwaukee. She recently started a Ph. D. program in Education, where she plans to focus her research on the growing gap between children and nature. This is her 16th year working for Camp Y-Koda. She enjoys her position at camp because she likes working with children and loves teaching about the natural world.

KAITLYN RAUTMANN • [email protected] CAMP Y-KODA SUMMER CAMP DIRECTORKaitlyn has been a member of the Camp Y-Koda community from the time she was a camper and volunteer. She enjoys educating the public and hopes to create awareness and appreciation for our environment. Mackinzi has many outdoor interests including gardening, kayaking, hiking and camping. She also has many creative hobbies such as drawing and painting, crafting and nature photography.

TERESE KOENE-CARROLL • [email protected] BILLING AND REGISTRATIONTerese began working at Camp Y-Koda in 2007 as an Outdoor Educator. With her love of camp, she became our Administrative Assistant and a Lifeguarding, CPR & First Aid Trainer for the Outdoor Education and Summer Camp Team. When she was 9 years old, she saved her 6 year old brother from drowning. She has been a lifeguard instructor for over 20 years and a swim instructor for more than 30 years. The best part she loves about working at camp is taking walks around our grounds and seeing our campers every morning with the pure energy and excitement they have for camp. She enjoys working with her family on a small hobby farm taking care of their ever-changing menagerie of animals including 3 dogs, 6 goats, 4 bunnies and 16 chickens. During her down time, Terese enjoys a good cookout with her friends and family. Her favorite activity at Camp Y-Koda is anything to do with water either at the lake, river or swimming pool.

They understand the magic of camp and work hard to ensure that your child has an amazing experience keeping with the traditions and core values that Camp Y-Koda has to offer. Counselors are carefully screened and selected based on experience working with children, maturity, sound judgement and sensitivity. Safety is our top priority. A TYPICAL DAY OF CAMP

Each day of camp provides a variety of safe and fun adventures!

8:30AM - OPENING CEREMONYEach morning we meet with our counselors, raise the flag and get excited for the day ahead!

8:45AM - ICE BREAKERSEach day we have ice breakers and games to get to know the other campers and make friends.

3:45PM - CLOSING CEREMONYWe round out our day with a closing ceremony: lowering the flag, a camp song and end of day reminders.

4:00PM - DEPARTUREEach afternoon we say goodbye to our counselors and friends as we get picked up or head to the bus to go home and share our exciting camp day!

NOTESOn Wednesday afternoon, campers participate in an all-camp game. Campers choose their own activity on Friday morning. Specialty camps may take off-site trips or require more time for instruction so the activity period in the morning may be longer. The rest of the daily schedule is adjusted accordingly.

Detailed schedules can be found on our website: www.sheboygancountyymca.org/camp-y-koda.

CAMP DAY: 9:00AM - 3:30PM Campers begin their adventure with a wide variety of small and large group activities, nature activities, arts & crafts, water fun, games, sports, special themed activities and more while growing as individuals! Mornings are so busy that we can’t help but build up an appetite. Mid-day we’ll kick back and relax by eating lunch and making new friendships out at the campsite.

Water fun begins after lunch with a jump in the swimming pool, swimming at the lake or enjoying a variety of water activities such as our slip n’ slide, tubing in the river and much more! To end our day, campers will enjoy a snack and one last activity.

WHAT TO BRING TO CAMP EACH DAYPlease label your child’s name on everything they bring to camp. If any other supplies are needed, camp will inform you. Please send your camper in clothing that is ok to get dirty!

TOP 10 REASONS WHY CAMP IS GREAT FOR KIDS!

10. Campers Spend the Day Being Physically Active Children spend way too much time inside and most of that time sitting down. Camp is walking, running, swimming, jumping, paddling, playing, hik-ing, climbing and more!

9. Campers Gain Confidence by Experiencing Success Camp helps build self-confidence and self-esteem by removing the academic, athletic and social competition that shapes their lives at school. With the diversity of activities and opportunities to succeed, camp is a real boost for young people. There is accomplishment every day at camp.

8. Campers Gain Resiliency The kind of encouragement and nurturing kids receive at camp makes it a great environment to try new things, endure setbacks and try again. It’s the perfect pressure-free environment to try new activities that may be a bit fearful, a continuous part of life.

7. Campers Unplug When kids take a break from television, cell phones, video games and the internet, they rediscover their own creative powers and engage in the REAL world, REAL people, REAL activities and REAL emotions. Camp is real!

6. Campers Develop Life-Long Skills Camps provide the right instruction, equipment and facilities for kids to enhance their athletic abilities, artistic talents and adventure skills. The sheer variety of activities offered allows kids to discover and develop what THEY like to do.

5. Campers Grow More Independent Camp is the perfect place for kids to practice making decisions for themselves without the constant guidance of a parent or teacher. Managing their daily choices in a safe and caring environment, children welcome this freedom to blossom in new directions. Camp helps kids develop who they are.

4. Campers Have Time for Unstructured Play Free from the overly structured, overly scheduled routines of home, school and athletics, life at camp gives children much needed time to just play! Camp is a slice of carefree living where kids can relax, laugh and be silly all day long. At camp we play!

3. Campers Learn Social Skills Through the dynamic of camper groups, campers share jobs and responsibilities, resolve disagreements, make group decisions, and learn firsthand the importance of sincere communication. Camp builds teamwork.

2. Campers Reconnect with Nature Camp is a wonderful antidote to Nature Deficit Disorder and the narrow experience of modern indoor life. Outdoor experiences enrich a child’s perception of the world and supports healthy childhood development.

1. Campers Make True Friends at CampCamp is a place where kids make their very best friends. Free from the social expectations pressuring them at school, camp provides an easy and silly no-pressure atmosphere for kids to make friends easily. All the fun at camp draws everyone together; singing, laughing, talking, playing - doing almost everything together. Camp creates friendships every day!

THURSDAY FAMILY NIGHT AND CAMP SLEEPOVEROn Thursdays, campers leave at 4:00pm and then return later with their family for the Thursday Family Program and camp sleepover. Throughout our camp week, each group will practice a camp song and entertaining skit to perform and sing at the family program. This event allows families to meet the counselors, tour the grounds and see the fun activities the camper has been doing all week. The program begins at 7:30pm for weeks 1-7 and at 7:00pm for weeks 8-11. Families are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to drop items off and shop at the camp store.

When the program is finished, all campers who would like to sleepover will meet at their campsite with their counselor and partake in a night activity, campfire songs and more! Our night activities range from swimming in the camp pool, carnivals, night hikes, star gazing, a campfire sing-a-long and so much more!

If the Family Program and sleepover is cancelled due to inclement weather, it will be announced on Camp Y-Koda’s website www.sheboygancountyymca.org/camp-y-koda and Facebook page.

CAMP STORE The camp store is your official source for a wide variety of novelty items and camp “swag” such as t-shirts, sweatpants, long sleeve sweatshirts, hats and more! Campers may also purchase nutritious snacks and refreshments at select times during the week and on Thursday evening during the family program. The store is not open on Monday. Snack items are $0.25 to $1.50. Merchandise items range from $1.50 to $50.00. We recommend purchasing all merchandise items on Thursday night.

CAMP POOL All groups using our pool are supervised by camp staff who are lifeguard certified by the American Red Cross. Each camper is required to take a swim test to determine their swimming ability. If your child passes the swim test, they will wear a green wristband. If they do not pass, they are required to stay in the roped-off shallow end. The deepest part of our pool is 4 ½ feet and the shallowest area is 2 ½ feet. Lifejackets are available to use upon request. More pool information can be found in the Parent Handbook.

DAY CAMP WEEKS 1 - 11Ages 6 - 13 Day Camp is one of the best ways to experience the fun of Camp Y-Koda! Think of it as the “sampler” of all the different camp activities. On any given day during the week, camp-ers may participate in archery, boating, climbing wall, fish-ing, fort building, nature studies, team building and so much more. The Day Camp activity schedule changes each week.

Campers are placed into groups with similarly aged children. It is a great way for your child to find out which activities they enjoy most so their next camp experience can be a specialty camp to focus on their favorite skill or activity. Please note that Day Care Licensing only allows archery and sling shots for age 7 and older, bb guns for age 9 and older, and the climbing wall for age 9 and older.

PSRESIDENT CAMPSTwo of the most popular camps are back with a resident camp inspired twist! These themed resident camps are a five day, four night experience for kids who can’t get enough of Camp Y-Koda. We’ll spend the week on our own schedule at our own pace. Our resident campers will stay in our cozy lodges each night or perhaps we’ll challenge ourselves by sleeping outdoors for a night.

All resident camps include meals, snacks and tons of action-packed fun. This is a great experience for campers to disconnect from technology and distractions of outside life for the week, offering an unforgettable positive experience. An email will be sent to parents prior to each camp with details and information about the week ahead.

STRANDED RESIDENT CAMP WEEK 7Ages 9 - 13We decided the only way to make Stranded Camp better was to turn it into a resident camp allowing for full blown, outrageous adventures that can go all day and into the evening. A day camp in the past, Stranded Camp became an instant favorite designed to mimic the once popular “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. Campers will be given scenarios and have to make a choice as a group. Each choice will lead them to an unknown adventure or challenge with the ultimate goal of surviving the scenario presented at the beginning of the week.

By turning Stranded into a resident camp, we have opened the door for some amazing and memorable escapades. Perhaps you will be setting up tents for an evening out, or paddling down a river, or using your compass to find your way out of an unknown woods. You won’t know until you’ve made your choice. Adventure awaits! This camp will be taking day field trips to local sites throughout the week.Additional waiver form required.

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE RESIDENT CAMP WEEK 4Ages 9 - 13Join us in this week long battle to diminish the terrible outbreak of zombies at camp. We will conquer brain craving challenges, obstacles and experiments to find a cure! On Monday we’ll set up base camp in our lodges and all week we’ll practice our skills needed to survive.

Campers will have the opportunity to sleep outside one night to set up a wilderness based refuge site and take night watch to defend our wilderness location from the zombies. Don’t forget your flashlights and put your skills to the test to see if you could survive the apocalypse!

COUNSELORS IN TRAINING CAMP WEEK 1Ages 14 - 16This is a one week leadership development camp for those interested in becoming counselors and leaders around the community. The week will focus on teamwork, positive character development, problem solving, values, communication and becoming a positive role model. On Wednesday and Thursday, the group will sleepover and stay in our Johnsonville Lodge to continue their training.

The CITs will also have the opportunity to help out with our younger day camp groups to put some of their newly learned skills to work. The program is designed to challenge the teen participants to be positive role models and future leaders at camp, school and in our community.

ASSISTANT COUNSELOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAMAge 14 & OlderThe Assistant Counselor Volunteer Program offers countless opportunities to interact with children, lead activities and participate in camp programs. Volunteers fulfill many different roles at camp. Volunteers must have a sincere desire to become strong leaders, a wish to give back to the camp community, a strong work ethic, lots of energy and creativity, a positive attitude and the ability to put children’s needs ahead of their own.

The objective of the program is to better prepare the participants to be future leaders, in and out of the camp setting. This is done through hands-on experiences and guidance from staff members. All volunteers are required to take pre-camp training in camp and state DCF rules and regulations.

Steps to VolunteerFor those who wish to volunteer with us, camp requires all prospective volunteers to partake in our Counselor in Training Camp to learn the expectations and duties of an assistant counselor volunteer. During this camp, they receive our volunteer application to complete and are required to apply and interview to become a potential volunteer. For past camp volunteers, please contact the camp director for information on volunteering again. To learn more, visit our website at www.sheboygancountyymca.org/camp-y-koda.

CommunicationCITs will focus on effective methods of communication, collaborating as a team and why communication is so important.

Influencing and Developing OthersCITs will learn about listening and communicating with others as a leader. They will use these skills in a variety of ways throughout summer and beyond.

InclusionCITs will learn about working with others from many different backgrounds, preventing exclusion as a form of bullying, and the importance of including everyone. We are stronger together!

Community and RelationshipsCITs will focus on building quality relationships while at camp with peers, campers and staff. Strong relationships equal a vibrant camp community.

Coaching and MentorshipCITs will focus on coaching and mentoring others to the best of their ability. This includes finding what motivates others to succeed and what type of strategies can be used to mentor others.

SUMMER CAMPS AT MAYWOOD SITEMaywood campers spend the majority of their day immersed in Maywood Environmental Park’s diverse habitats, learning and playing. We take time every day to explore the outdoors, fostering a connection to nature. We will return your camper tired from fresh air, exploration and physical activity.

Maywood is a beautiful 135 acre environmental park where habitat diversity abounds. Prairie, maple forest, wetland, ponds and the Pigeon River provide a haven for wildlife. A stunning nature center features exhibits, program space and laboratories which serve to enhance the experiences and discoveries made while outdoors. The park also has many miles of trails for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing.

Our Camp PhilosophyChildhood should be joyful and wholesome! We believe that the earliest, most memorable experiences of a child should include tree climbing, catching frogs, chasing butterflies and playing in the forest and river. We believe that it is important to educate and inspire current and future generations of children to explore, innovate and advocate for nature. At Maywood, we guide learning and youth development with nature as our vehicle. We imagine. We play. We get messy.

SLEEPOVEROn Thursdays, campers leave Maywood at 4:00pm as always, but are welcome to return at 7:30pm for a sleepover. Campers will sleep in tents provided by camp. If inclement weather is forecasted, the sleepover will be moved indoors. Friday breakfast is provided, followed by the regularly scheduled Friday field trip to Camp Y-Koda.

SWIMMING AT QUARRY PARK IN SHEBOYGANEvery Tuesday and Thursday, campers walk from Maywood to Quarry Beach Adventure Park in Sheboygan to swim and play on the inflatable slides and obstacles. Life vests are provided by Quarry Park and must be worn by all swimmers.

All participants must have a signed waiver to swim at the Sheboygan Quarry. Waiver forms will be available during pick-up and drop-off or sent home on the first day of camp. Only one form is needed for the camp season. Waiver forms are also available on Camp Y-Koda’s website.

FRIDAY FIELD TRIPS TO CAMP Y-KODAEvery Friday, Maywood campers will be taken on a field trip to Camp Y-Koda for swimming in the camp pool followed by canoeing, kayaking, fishing and more swimming in the camp lake. Campers will have a cookout lunch before returning to Maywood for afternoon games.
