During my first two years as Head of School, I have learned about the value and enduring qualities of this remarkable community by listening—to teachers, parents, alums, and students. Pat Kelly, an alumnus from the Class of 1972 wrote eloquently of his Summit years, paying particular homage to Sandra Adams, former Latin teacher, counselor and Head of School,

“Mrs. Adams’ manifold abilities as instructor, as inspirer and as pathfinder on an amazing journey of honest-to-goodness education made an indelible impression on this young learner, one which carried me forward on an Adams-inspired voyage of lifelong learning. Her unique capacity for animating long-past civilizations and a so-called ‘dead’ language was fundamental to my later educational and professional success, found in everything from the expanded vocabulary and love of the word that underpinned my verbal and written communication skills, to an affection for the historical and ‘ancient’ that is manifested in everything from college majors to preferences in current ‘pleasure’ reading.”

An education of Summit’s caliber takes dedicated, skilled teachers and administrators, involved parents and generous donors whose gifts provide resources needed to stay on the leading edge of educational thought and practice. People support Summit for a variety of reasons. Many are grateful for the outstanding education their children are receiving today. Others value the education they received years or decades ago. Still others are looking forward and want to be sure Summit remains vital for decades to come. All have confidence that investing in Summit students is one of the best ways to make tomorrow’s world a better place. Pat Kelly spoke for many saying,

“What I do know is that the educational and social experience of Summit set me on a course of learning, and provided the strong following wind that carried me to ‘higher’ educational accomplishment and then on to professional places I would not have found but for the navigational (learning) skills gained on Reynolda Road. For these reasons, and many more, I respectfully proffer this gift, with hopes that it may help other fortunate students to set sail under the guidance of teachers as talented and compelling as Sandra Adams.”

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide about 4.9% of the School’s operating budget each year. These unrestricted gifts help meet immediate needs,

develop relevant new programs and sustain the vitality of students’ academic experience. Annual Fund gifts from alums are extremely gratifying because they indicate a Summit education is valued long

after graduation. In addition, alum donations support the financial aid program. The Alumni Scholarship Fund was founded in 1997 with a

challenge from the Lovett Foundation. It provides aid to students with demonstrated financial need. To date, alum dollars assist nearly two

students per year.

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund provide essential revenue each year to augment the operating budget. Endowment and capital fund gifts support Summit in different and equally important ways.

Summit’s endowment funds, begun in 1959, have grown to $14.7 million, the largest per capita endowment among peer schools in the state. During the 2009-2010 school year, the endowment generated $821,300 for the operating budget. Gifts to the endowment come in many ways – unrestricted gifts, named endowments which support an area of particular interest to a donor, and by bequest. These funds generate unrestricted income as well as income designated for specific purposes, including financial aid, curriculum development, faculty enrichment, and student travel.

Capital campaign gifts catapult the School forward in transformative ways.

The Learning That Lasts Forever Capital Campaign has made possible state-of-the art facilities that inspire, teach, and open the doors to learning opportunities that prepare students for a rapidly changing world.

The most recent gifts to the Learning That Lasts Forever Capital Campaign come from parents who joined the Summit community during the 2009-2010 year. These parents, led by Shannon ‘89 and Chris ’87 Wilson, continued a long standing tradition by participating in the New Parents’ Capital Campaign. Gifts by parents new to Summit raised the campaign total to $10,604,141, bringing the campaign closer to the $13.5 million goal.
