    HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS

    PROBLEM?

    Research: conducted in the Nationwide KAPBaseline Survey on Alcohol and Drug Use inNamibia, published in 2002, by the Ministryof Health and Social Services (MOHSS).

    The three main factors creating the problem:

    - the ENVIRONMENT that motivates drinking;

    - the availability of SUBSTANCES and

    the PERSONS consuming alcohol andpersonal circumstances

    Stand Up Against Alcohol Misuse

    Support in form of food, hospital and homevisits, as well as referral for counselling andrehabilitation to Social Workers of MOHSS

    IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOLTARGETS) continue

    That people are aware of the of abuse ofalcohol

    Article 20-25 on Gender based violence isChallenges. We need to half violence by

    2015 deadline of the SADC Protocol onGender and Development.

    This target is well implemented at the town.

    The big marcg we had with about hundredsof people is a testimony.PR

    SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

    Organized women sub-CORD groups like

    literacy promoters, Red Cross volunteersand other are operating in the neighbouringfarms outside Outjo and tried to implementsimilar activities held in the town.

    Furthermore, government ,ministries andNGOs are mainstreaming alcohol issues intheir programmes.

    LESSONS LEARNED

    Local ordinances on alcohol regulation is not

    tight, therefore intensive advocacy on theliquor act has to be applied

    Shebeens are sprouting in the area,

    therefore a petition for shebeen closure after12h00 was started

    Limited resources for outreach, thereforesources for funds for outreach campaigns
