CHAPTER 1 - I N T R O D U C T I O N The Sun City West Garden Club has been in existence since 1979. The Club was founded by several men interested in gardening, who met for fellowship and to exchange ideas about gardening in a “hostile environment”. Three groups of gardeners were instrumental in the formation of the present day Sun City West Garden Club. They were the Garden Plot Club (later known as the Agricultural Club), the Garden Club (Landscape Gardening) and the Master Gardeners of the Northwest Valley. Today the Sun City West Garden Club is comprised of Sun City West residents, with widely diverse gardening interests. All are interested in one or more aspect of horticulture. With a membership of over one hundred sixty, the club represents many years of gardening experience, much of it acquired in other sections of the country. Learning to garden in the Valley of the Sun is not an easy task, nor is it impossible. The Sun City West Garden Club is out to prove this to its residents, especially to newcomers. Newcomers to Sun City West are thirsty for gardening advice and the club hopes to be helpful. Gardening here in the low desert is so different than anywhere else. That is where the club comes in. During the club’s monthly meetings, members can glean information and techniques about gardening in this unique environment from the experience of other club members and listen to topical presentations given by a variety of guest speakers.

CHAPTER 2 - HISTORY OF THE SUN CITY WEST GARDEN CLUB

THE BEGINNING Sun City West Garden Club became a chartered club December 13, 1979. In January 1981, the Recreation Centers signed an agreement with the Garden Club for the use of 6.2 acres of land leased from DEVCO (Del E. Webb Development Company). Located at Bell and Dysart Roads, the land provided more than 200 garden plots. In April, the club held its first garden show in the R. H. Johnson Center arcade. The club had cuttings and plants available for anyone who gave a donation. Proceeds went to the Sun City West Library. Club members diagnosed plant problems, recommended treatment for troubled plants, and even made house calls. 1

Morris Weingarten2 , first president of the Garden Club, and his board worked with the Del Webb organization. The result was a gift of land at Dysart and Bell Roads, which they fenced. Webb also supplied other generous help to start the fledgling group. The land at the time was known as the Agricultural Common. As land became pressing, the location was changed to another location (17800 137th Drive). The present garden plots at this second location are used enthusiastically by the garden group to raise produce. 3

THE FOUNDERS The Sun City West Garden Club was founded by Lloyd Murphy, a certified Master Gardener. Murphy said that he organized the garden club “for fellowship and to save money.” Another purpose was to help gardeners with advice and answers to their questions as to how to grow a garden in a desert environment. 4

A BIT OF HISTORY: REGARDING GARDEN PLOTS

Story by Mildred Baker in The Wester-Aug. 27 - Sept. 2, 1992 Gardening was a hobby when Lloyd and Lillian Murphy lived in Naperville, Illinois, where he was a scientist in the research and development laboratories of Continental Can, and she was a executive secretary with the same company. Murphy has been active with the crop-producing members of the Sun City West Garden Club since the Master Gardeners began meeting in 1980 … although he attended the group’s first meeting December 4, 1979. Having had a garden plot in Naperville, Murphy was interested in availability of plots for local enthusiasts. He and Morris Weingarten negotiated with the Webb Corporation for a suitable area. “The first Sun City West gardens were located at Bell and Dysart Road,” recalls Murphy, “but when the Webb Company decided to sell that location, we needed to secure another area.”

It was during Murphy’s term as president of the club that he worked with Dick Mastin of the Webb Company to secure the present permanent location at 137th Drive. It consists of 6.7 acres and 287 plots,

A BIT OF HISTORY: REGARDING GARDEN PLOTS - continued which 80 gardeners cultivate. A six foot brick wall marks the area with its shed and washroom. “Millions and millions of white flies are our biggest problem,” observes Murphy. “When the cotton farmers spray, the files all flock to our gardens, and so far there is no control. They look like a snowstorm!” “On November 14, 1989,” states Murphy, “U of A opened its first satellite extension office … located in Sun City West in the PORA building, as the Northwest Valley Master Gardener facility.”

CHAPTER 3 - DIVISION In 1987, the development of homes continued to grow as well as the community’s population. Most of the newcomers were interested in their new landscape and their back yards. These new residents sought advice on how to grow plants and flowers in a new environment (in 100+ degree heat). Gardeners interested in raising vegetables split off from the Garden Club. First known as the Garden Plots Club, the members changed the name to the Agricultural Club. 5 The Sun City West Agricultural Club received its charter on August 2, 1987. They withdrew from the Sun City West Garden Club to become a chartered club of the Recreation Centers because of unlike interests and purposes. Their purpose was to promote interest and disseminate knowledge of gardening, horticulture, cultivation and harvesting of vegetables and other edibles 6 whereas the purpose of the Garden Club was to promote landscape gardening and the maintenance and the beautification of our environment.

CHAPTER 3 - DIVISION - continued The split of the Agricultural Plots Club and the Sun City West Garden Club was not a smooth process. After many meetings and much correspondence between President Charlotte Zartman of the Sun City West Garden Club and the Plots Club organizer Rayland Evans, and W. S. O’Donnell, General Manager of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West, the formation of a new Agricultural Plots Club was created. The following is an excerpt from a letter dated February 1, 1993, from Treasurer Everett Mortenson to President Dick Muncie, which shows details of the division of the two clubs. … “This data can be used as basis for making an equitable distribution of funds between the Garden Club and the newly formed Agricultural Club. This financial detail shows a surplus of funds amounting to $1,853.72. The plan calls for equal distribution of surplus between the two clubs. In addition, the Liabilities of $2,296.47 belong to the Agricultural Club.” Also, as indicated in the letter dated October 5, 1992 from W. S O’Donnell on Page 6, he states that it is a “natural club evolutionary process” for one club to break away and form another club. As long as there is sufficient member interest there would be no problem. As a result, the Agricultural Plots Club was formed.

CHAPTER 4 - GREENHOUSE The Greenhouse is located in the rear courtyard (north) of the Beardsley Meeting rooms at the Beardsley Recreation Center, 12755 W. Beardsley Avenue. The Greenhouse Club received its charter on July 8, 1985. It was started as space assignments for members. They were for propagation by germinating seeds, root cuttings and grafting stock. It initially had 12 spaces which were rented on a first come, first served basis. July 9, 1985 - Robert Pruitt, acting chairman of the Greenhouse Club, was given $1,000 by the Recreation Centers of Sun City West for start-up supplies and equipment. Full accounting to be made to the Recreation Centers by October 1985. J. Wood wrote Clyde Hunter, Treasurer of the Sun City West Garden Club, to release to Leon Ginsberg (Secretary of the Greenhouse Club) the amount held in the Sun City West Garden Club treasury for our first year of existence. On July 5, 1990, the Greenhouse Club was dissolved. They were a non-chartered cub until invited to join the Garden Club. In July, 1992, the Agricultural Club petitioned to become separate from the Garden Club. On October 23, 1992, the Garden Club, as it is now, started with the nomination of officers. Past officers and monitors of the Greenhouse: 1985 Robert Pruitt Chairman 1986 Jean H. The Greenhouse Committee (1998 - 2009) consisting of Carole and Ray Kamka, Lou Jordan, Yvonne Golsteyn, Louise Carroll and Diane Wingert, meet the first Monday of each month to do planting and maintenance of the plants. Each member takes a turn at watering during the month. This is done throughout the year. The propagated plants are sold each year at the Sun City West Fall Arts & Crafts Fair to raise money for the Club. This money is used to subsidize the Club’s trips, picnic, speaker gifts, repairs to the greenhouse, additional equipment, and purchase of plants. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1998 – 2009 Carole and Ray Kamka, Lou Jordan, Yvonne Golsteyn, Louise

Carroll and Diane Wingert, 2010-2015 Louise Pierce, Louise Carroll, The Recreation Centers of Sun City West has donated to the Greenhouse the property adjacent to the building. It is being used as a propagation garden. The cacti will be tagged with numbers which will correspond to a list to be posted on the Greenhouse window. This list will have the name of the plant corresponding to the number. CHAPTER 5 - PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS

(1980 - 1987) During the early formative years of the Garden Club, there is no record of monthly activities. However, the club was very active. Some special events over these years were as follows: 1980 - A project of the Garden Club was conducting a contest to pick the most attractive yards. The winners were: 1st Place, Mr. & Mrs. David Kravitz; 2nd Place, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Goss; 3rd Place, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Smith.7 1981 - A project of the Sun City West Garden Club that took place April 15, 1981, was the first garden show at the Johnson Center arcade. “Thousands of people attended,” stated club president Morris Weingarten. The club had cuttings and plants available for anyone who gave a donation. Receipts went to the Sun City West Library. 8 The club helped members diagnose plant problems and recommended treatment for troubled plants. “We even made house calls,” states Weingarten. 1983 - Sun City West Garden Club Landscape Contest - Winners: Barton & Mildred Kellogg and Joe & Frances Farrell. CHAPTER 9 - TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS The monthly Newsletter was created using the computer and Microsoft Word software. Enhancements were added for fonts and pictures to be used in the Newsletter. It is sent via e-mail to 130+ members which in turn saves the club copy costs and postage. A club logo was selected from various images available via the computer. This logo was applied to the Newsletters, club tee shirts (which were sold to members for $6.00) and club aprons used by members in the sales booth at the November Arts and Craft Fair. A Membership database was created which is used to: - Create meeting sign in sheets - Trip sign up control - Annual membership renewals - Adding new members - Create various required Recreation Center reports - Create an e-mail ID list to send the monthly Newsletter - Create non-email mailing labels - Special club activity information The Garden Club now has the availability to search on the web for various club needs such as greenhouse needs (pots, shade screens, tools) and field trip planning information. Reports have been created for the Treasurer to use to keep track of dues and trip applications. All club information is available on the web site which shows: - Information about the club and a membership application - Announcements and news (Newsletter) - Activities (pictures of our picnic, trips, craft fair, etc.) - Meeting information - About the club - club brochure - Organization (names, phone numbers and pictures of Officers and Board Members) - Calendar with all club monthly activities - Other related websites - links to other garden related information
