WELCOME
The Spotlight on Youth idea originated 16 years
ago with the desire to highlight the positive creative and artistic accomplishments of young people in North
Central Florida. We welcome you to this event.
National media portrayals of youth in trouble have
resulted in a negative image of today’s young people. Our goal is to counteract that image. Youth who
violate the law represent a small percentage of young people. In reality, the majority of America’s youth are
participating and excelling in academics, sports, and creative arts. Our message is a simple one: most
youth are disciplined and talented achievers who will become successful adults.
We are fortunate here in North Central Florida to have many talented achievers. This afternoon we celebrate the gifts of selected artists in the areas
of music, dance, writing, culinary, and visual arts through the efforts of CDS
and Spotlight on Youth. The artists and performers are all deserving of recognition. All young people spotlighted today have worked hard at their craft
and successfully auditioned in front of a panel of judges. Roughly one-third of the performances that auditioned are included in the show. Of those not
chosen this year, many performed quite well, but creating a balanced show that lasts just over two hours forced the judges to exclude some students.
This show includes some of the best.
The mission of CDS Family & Behavioral Health Services is “Strengthening
Communities by Building Strong Families.” To this end, CDS Board of Directors, staff, and its partners proudly present the Sixteenth annual
Spotlight on Youth—2015. Thank you for your support, and thank you to the performers for sharing their talents with us.
Art as Prevention
Research suggests that children who are involved in the arts have increased self-esteem, confidence, and stress management skills. They are less likely to
drop out of school, become involved in violence, or abuse drugs. Arts education helps increase academic performance. High school students with
four years of study in the arts typically score higher on their SATs. It has also been suggested that youth who are passionate about the arts are more
tolerant and accepting of people and cultures different from their own.
Spotlight on Youth encourages area teens to express themselves through
the arts instead of through self-destructive behaviors. We seek to foster civic
engagement in addition to affording teens a chance to shine. Spotlight also raises money to support the Interface Youth
Shelter and other programs aimed at giving young people and their families a chance at healthier, happier lives.

You’re sitting there in your tied – up town thinking
what a world to see
But people’s faces, they come up erased. Is this the
kind of world we wanna see?
Where people get played like a checkers game,
And no one bothers to keep score
But I know a place where we can escape
It’s not too far away
I’ll drive somewhere we can hide
So together we might feel less alone
You often wonder if it’s any easier to just pretend it
isn’t true
‘Cause people take, they just wash away the very
best parts of you
And we all get played like a checkers game,
And we all keep perfect score
But I know a place where we can escape
It’s not too far away
I’ll drive somewhere we can hide
So together we might feel less alone
And lately that’s what you have been, stuck in a
solitary skin, not trusting anybody else
And maybe that’s the wisest thing, don’t let them
see your suffering, but that makes liars of us all
But I know a place where we can escape
It’s not too far away
I’ll drive somewhere we can hide
So together we might feel less alone
You’re sitting there in your tied – up
town thinking what a world to see

anyone’s expectations, only to return for their second year with
almost 70 students. During the first year, EGC traveled all over
Alachua County performing at different venues including
community events and churches. They even had the
opportunity to perform next to Gospel Legend Mrs. Dorothy
Norwood.
The choir has advanced to the point that they are now in the
beginning stages of planning a week long tour for the 2015-
2016 school year to include Philadelphia, New Jersey, Chicago,
Atlanta, and Florida. They are also working on a Central Florida
tour for this summer, as well as performing in August in
Jacksonville as part of a Gospel Extravaganza being held there.
Eastside Gospel Choir is an extended family. They believe in
supporting and encouraging each other at all times. They take
pride in what they do and are not ashamed of representing what
they believe in. Eastside Gospel Choir is not about individualism,
it is all about team work and what it takes to stick together.

Dream 17 by Marquel Smith
Sitting here alone I’m a villager with a dream
A simple Florida boy and I’m only 17
I’ve got years of stories to receive
But right now it’s the present
Like on Christmas Eve
This world is full of princes, kings, and queens
And they’re the only ones who can fit their royal jeans
They talk down on me
Like the laws of physics
But their words are heavy
And that’s not scientific
They’re going to kill and torture
Me and my town
Until their reign is over
And they hand down the crown

I wish you will notice me
I wish you would pay attention to me
Just look my way
Glance, smile, or just brush my shoulder
Then my heart will leap with joy
What do I have to do to get your attention?
Do I need to put flowers in my hair?
Or have on your favorite color you always wear?
Will you ever notice me?
I'm guessing you will probably not...
You will not pay attention to the way I twirl my
hair
Or how I tilt my head when I stare
I would do anything for you to notice me
But it seems like you wouldn't care
Until that day comes
I will sit and notice all the little things you do
You know its love when,
He walks you to class, every single day
Calls you beautiful when you feel awful
You smile and get nervous when you see him
His cologne helps you fall asleep
You know its love when,
You completely trust each other
You miss him, even if he’s only gone for two
minutes
You think about him constantly
You need his arms wrapped around you
You know its love when,
You and him fit together perfectly
You know its love when,
You cry when you think about losing him
I love you

I see a room of forgotten dreams,
a pile of stored up adventures and visions,
sitting in the corner, dusty and neglected.
I see the memories that fade,
no longer worth remembering.
I see hats and toys, books and glasses,
math homework and poorly drawn scribbles.
I see necklaces and coins, wristbands supporting
causes that no longer have meaning.
I see neglected trinkets no longer capable
of being seen, hiding behind recent treasure.
I see applications never filled out, and
pictures thrown about.
I see posters and instruments,
gifts from lovers and those loved.
I see glaring walls that fall back on the viewers,
and a poorly painted ceiling threatening to fall.
I see a blue carpet covered in invisible
tears, drinks, memories, and prayers.
I see a bed worn and torn,
hardly able to hold a person up.
I see a pillow soaked in tears, secrets,
and fears. A tool to cover the ears.
I see blankets that have always hidden,
the sanctuary of a young boy hiding.
I see the room of a dreamer, a late bloomer,
a boy who couldn't bare to live in reality.
I see a young boy, unable to choose.
Indecisive and naive he seems in between,
standing and falling, lost in his world.
I do not see a young man living here.
I see me.

moves, and you will eventually get it.”

Forgotten or Remembered
by Leighann Marie Callan
Forgotten or remembered;
Which do you choose?
Oh, what would you choose?
Forgotten or remembered,
Do you really have a choice?
Forgotten or remembered;
What is the difference?
In Death you are either;
In life you are too.
Yet in life, there is always,
One single painful question;
Forgotten or remembered,
Do we really have a choice?
Forgotten or remembered;
Why choose one or the other?
Forgotten for nothing done, or
Remembered for your mistakes.
After death it’s been decided.
Forgotten or remembered,
Do we even have a choice?
Forgotten or remembered;
Which choice is the best?
In life you must choose,
You must be what you want.
But fate, despite your choices,
Somehow plays her hand in things.
In life, it makes you wonder:
Forgotten or remembered,
Do you even have a choice?
Forgotten or remembered;
What’s the point of the choice?
Other people choose for you,
So why fight against fate?
Because we all know these things:
We are always loved.
Your mistakes are forgotten.
It’s the small things that count, and
You are always remembered,
And never forgotten.
Forgotten or remembered;
Choose and take charge of your fate!
In the dark night as the sky turns gray,
The moon peeks through the trees.
The wind sighs through the night,
A star sings a sad song.
The sky shows sorrow across the world.
The moon begins to cry.
The trees screech and the grass whispers.
Animals and creatures of the night come out.
Tears fall during darkness,
But there is something.
Beyond the darkness you will see,
What will come to thee.
I will search all night until the darkness is gone.
When the star stops singing his sad song,
It becomes quiet.
And the sky becomes pink.
The light, he is called the Sun.
He will appear to make the darkness disappear.
The darkness will come again,
But the light will always win.
And what comes with it will remain Unknown . . .
a singer's sweet vibrato permeating the still air
are an artist's brushes of paint across a canvas
tight braids accentuating a boy's wild hair
are pink flowers decorating the vines on a trellis
a chef's touch of orange ganache on a rich dish
are intricate flowerpots placed on creaky porches
a writer's long paragraphs which incite wild imagery in our
heads
are long sandy beaches dotted by flickering torches
when you sew together a makeshift dress
or create a wobbly wooden table
or arrange a vase of flowers to brighten the day
or write a heart-pounding, adventurous fable
you, indeed, have made art of the best kind
and inside your head you may find
little bursts of expression waiting for release
escaping through your fingers, putting your mind at ease

Congratulations to the 2015 Spotlight on Youth Participants!
Your participation in this great showcase of talents proves that you are a leader in many ways. It may mean that you are a leader in school or that you are involved in community service or in your church. You can also be a
leader by helping your peers to take part in academic or community outreach projects. I challenge you to stay drug free, which means that you are in control of your life and that you are headed in the right direction. Only YOU can
make the right decision. Never let your friends choose the path you take in your life. Let your heart and the guidance you have gotten from your family continue to be your guide to success.
Again, congratulations on your Spotlight on Youth achievement. You are the star today!
