NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES By AJ President, Dr. Armand Rothschild

We are very fortunate to have signed our clergy to lifetime contracts this past year. As part of Cantor Lipp’s contract, he was granted the opportunity to take a sabbatical so that he may continue to provide a

spiritually-uplifting worship experience. His sabbatical will take place in June, July and August of this year when he will be traveling to do study and research in Israel. He has many obligations most of which will be performed by Rabbi Slosberg. Deborah Slosberg will be taking over Hebrew lessons for the bar and bat mitzvah students. Several of Cantor’s duties can be performed on a temporary basis by our congregants, and that is the crux of my appeal. This time, I’m not appealing for money, but for your time and talent. We need bodies at morning and afternoon minyan services. We need Torah readers, haftarah readers, and people who can lead morning or afternoon minyan. Many of our members have already committed their time and talent. Although the synagogue fulfills many roles, it’s fundamental purpose is to provide a place for people to come together and pray. Mourners can’t mourn and the complete service can’t be performed without 10 people. It would be a great mitzvah (and show just how great this congregation is) if we can get a few more people to look at their schedules and see where they can carve out a few minutes before or after work a few times this summer to attend a morning or afternoon minyan. If you can read Torah or haftarah, and know you will be in town, sign up to read a few times. Contact Cantor Lipp at [email protected] to let us know that we can count on you. Who knows, it may become a habit!

AJ LUNCH AND LEARN SHABBAT STUDY AJ has combined the former Friday “Lunch and Learn” Mishneh Torah class with the Shabbat Mishneh Torah study held during the Kiddush Lunch on Shabbat mornings when there is not a bar or bat mitzvah or a Shabbat

Scholar. Bring your plate from the Kiddush lunch and join Rabbi Slosberg and Cantor Lipp in the Benovitz Library. Prior knowledge of Jewish texts and Hebrew is NOT required. This lively discussion is open to the community.

Passover and our love/hate relationship

Getting ready without going mad!

By Rabbi Laura Metzger

The first seder is weeks away, so why am I talking about Passover already? Because I got tired of being so exhausted from the getting ready that I couldn’t enjoy the holiday when it arrived. Feast of Freedom? For whom?

If you find yourself in a love-hate relationship with Passover, or wanting to love it but hating every moment, this might help. It’s the first of two articles on letting go of the misery and letting in the joy of Passover. So start now, even though it’s still winter, and first of all, liberate yourself. Free yourself of old habits and outdated expectations. The work won’t go away, but the stress and the resentment can. I don’t promise this will make you and your family as happy as freed slaves. You might all still grumble like the Israelites in the wilderness. But I do enjoy the process and I’m happy to share my approach. In short, I simplify, I do a bit at a time, recruit help even if it means paying for it, and spread it out so that I can take my time and appreciate the meaning. My Passover cleaning takes an extra hour a week over six weeks. Yes, I have help, paid help. It’s worth it to me. We start with the upstairs, doing the hard-to-reach things first, then, furniture, floors and windows, baseboards, doors, all that stuff and last the blankets, rugs, whatever needs laundering. Next is downstairs, same pattern. Basement, porch and garage in turn. Kitchen last, but still a couple weeks before seder so I have time to cook. I prepare a part of the kitchen for Passover, leaving an area for everyday cooking. Plastic tablecloths and dishpans help me keep things separate. I’ve simplified the kitchen change-over. I used to pack up everything and haul it to the basement, then bring up

all the Passover dishes and glassware and pots and cooking implements and put them away. I don’t anymore. I crowd all the year-round, hametz, gear into just a couple cabinets, freeing up a corner of the kitchen for Passover things. Every cabinet and drawer gets labeled either Hametz or Pesah for clarity. Then I bring up what I need as I need it. And when I’m done with it, back it goes to the basement. So when I’ve made the soup, the stockpots get washed and put back in the cabinet in the basement. Ditto the food processor once I’ve made the haroset. I manage with two skillets, two pots, one strainer, two sharp knives, a couple cooking spoons, and then I wonder why I don’t live so simply all year. That’s your new Passover mantra: Simplify. Whatever it is you’re doing, if it’s just because you’re used to doing it, that doesn’t mean you have to do it this year. I learned that from an Orthodox Jewish newsletter 22 years ago. Your great-grandma might have taken each book off the shelves and shaken it to remove any crumbs lurking between the pages, but if you don’t munch cookies while reading, you don’t have to do that! Passover wasn’t meant to be complex. It wasn’t meant to be about things. It was meant to be about what we can shed — if we can live for eight days without bagels, there’s a lot we can set aside for this time. And when we set aside our obsession with things and the tasks that things demand, we open time for appreciating how the weather is warming (not yet, but it will), the new plants are pushing their way up in the garden, the greedy birds are crowding the feeders and singing as if their lives depended on it. And if we’re blessed, loved ones are nearby. Don’t obsess. Simplify. Recruit help. You can do it. I believe in you. And next time, I’ll share with you how to eat well during Passover. It’s not all matzah. I promise. With affection, Rabbi Metzger

AJ LOVES NEW BABIES MAZAL TOV TO THESE AJ MEMBERS!

Sunday, April 10, 2016 ▪ 2:00 p.m.Roth Family Board Room

The Passover Haggadah reminds us to open our homes to “all who are hungry.” In keeping with this theme, the Adath Jeshurun Book Club welcomes guest facilitator, Karyn Moskowitz, Executive Director of New Roots, sponsor of Louisville’s Fresh Stops. Karyn will lead a discussion of “The Stop: How the fight for good food transformed a community

and inspired a movement” by Nick Saul and Andrea Curtis. ($14)

Beyond “evil” food banks: “The Stop is Saul’s stubborn insistence that food banks are basically evil … Food banks mute the pressure on government to live up to its responsibility to face poverty head-on … The Stop is part community development primer, part policy guide, part cry for justice, but mostly it’s an endearing story of people who came together to build something this country hasn’t seen before – and if the story continues on its current trajectory, will soon be changing cities across North America one neighborhood at a time.” (www.urbanfoodrevolution.com)

For information on the AJ Book Club or to order a copy of "The Stop," contact Deborah Slosberg at 458-5359 or [email protected].
