Deacon Jeff’s Corner
Last weekend, we returned to Ordinary Time in the Church year. Many confuse this with being “normal” time or almost boring. Quite the contrary!
Ordinary, as it is used here, actually means “numbered” as this weekend we celebrate the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The gospel readings will come from Matthew until the end of the liturgical year in November and the first reading (Old Testament) will have a similar theme to the gospel.
Take this week for example. The first reading is from the second book of Kings. The prophet Elisha, a “holy man of God” as he is referred to in the reading, visits the same woman and her husband frequently. Elisha asks God what type of reward may be given to her. She is rewarded for her kindness with a child she has been unable to bear.
In the gospel, Jesus says if we can put God above all
others, which also means caring for the least of our brothers and sisters, we will certainly be rewarded.
Maybe not during this lifetime will we reap such a reward but we certainly will in life to come. This, my friends, is our purpose on earth: To love, honor and
serve the Lord with all our hearts, that means taking care of each other. In this society we live in that is so
individualistic, so narcissistic, the message we receive this week is difficult to follow. Jesus never says
following him will be easy but if we can carry the attitude that other’s needs are more important than
our own, we will someday reap the reward of eternal life and love with God! Deacon Jeff

Faith, Family, Friends by Deb Wegner-Hohensee
We hear in the readings this weekend, everything we have and are … are gifts from God…He asks us to love family and neighbor, but not even these should be put before our love of God, and to remember all earthly loves are enriched and enhanced when we love God. Last week over a simple cup of coffee I had a great visit with a friend who has been struggling with serious health issues. She shared stories of her faith, family and friends and how their prayers are what helped her through this difficult time. As I remembered listening to her, I thought she really gets it. Our love of God needs to be the main focus. After that everything else will be in balance. As disciples (followers of Jesus) we nourish our love of God through prayer, in the reception of the sacraments (grace), and in carrying our cross (self-sacrifice). I believe sharing gifts of hospitality, charity, kindness and others, are gifts with which we love God. In God we love our family and neighbors. The more we love, the greater the capacity we have for loving. You know the old adage: use it or lose it. In the 1st reading, the woman making a room for Elisha is putting others before oneself. We all need to take an action step forward to be the hands, feet, and voice for Jesus. There is no limit to God’s love: He expects us to love him with all our heart, with all our soul and all our mind. How or what are your plans or ideas to carry out God’s mission of discipleship this week: i.e. a random act of kindness, a smile for everyone you encounter, a phone call to a lost friend, a meal for a new mom or just a simple cup of coffee with a friend?
On Friday, July 3rd the Parish Office & Building will be
Closed for the 4th of July Holiday!!

Need Temperature Takers!!
We need your help as we re-open Church for Masses. We are required by the diocese to take some
active precautions for the safety of all during this COVID 19 bounce back. One of these precautions is
taking temperatures of all who enter the building. It’s easy and touch free and just a half hour
commitment before Mass. If you would like to volunteer, please call the parish office and
ask for Deb.
