From Fr. JC Maximillian’s Desk “In the Beginning” Genesis 1:1-2:4

This is the second week of what will be an eight-week series of columns looking at the Book of Genesis. To not make the column too long, I will not be putting the Scripture passage in the column, so break out your Bible. This week we truly are “In the Beginning,” looking at the

creation account given in the first chapter plus of the Book of Genesis. It is very important to pay attention to what is said in the very first sentence, “God created….” God is the subject of the first sentence, and in fact he is the subject of the Book of Genesis. Genesis is about God, and as such, it should not be read as a science book. It is a book about God. A second important point to understand from this passage from Genesis is that it is God who creates, not us. Human beings can innovate, mold, form, shape and build, but we cannot create, only God can. In the next sentence, a pattern is begun. We are told that the earth was FORMLESS and EMPTY. The pattern of creation is poetic; God speaks, creates, declares it good, and the day ends. It is a theological poem about FORMING and FILLING. Days 1 to 3 are about FORMING: (1) light and darkness, (2) sea and sky, and (3) dry land. Days 4 to 6 are about FILLING: (4) lights in the sky, (5) creatures of water and sky, and (6) creatures of land. As part of filling the land, God creates man and woman. Human beings are special because we are created in the image and likeness of God. God gives Man a task, namely dominion over all of creation. This dominion is not to be harsh, but as a gentle, responsible steward. Despite being special, human beings are not given their own day. They are created on the sixth day, just like all the other animals on the land. At first this might seem like a gip, but God is reminding us that we are creatures. Like all creatures, we are limited (finite), dependent, and mortal. We must live with limitations and restrictions. When things get out of whack in our lives, we try to act like a creator. It’s often because we try to control things. We think we know best. We think… if only people would do what I want them to do when I want them to do it. We say things like “Things aren’t going MY way” – that’s just it, MY WAY! Control leads to worry, anxiety, stress…but that is not the role we are called to play. That is not our place. Our proper place in creation is… yes, over creation but also, under God. To let God be God and let us be creatures. THAT is our proper place. That leads us to the second important lesson from this passage in Genesis. On the seventh day God rests, and he blesses the seventh day. We call it the sabbath. In fact, later God will tell Moses that one of the 10 Commandments is to keep holy the sabbath. God is a covenant making and covenant keeping God. A covenant is a promise that binds two parties together unconditionally. Right from the beginning, through creation God makes a covenant with human beings; we are created to be in a relationship with him. Just as a wedding ring is a sign of the covenant a husband and wife make to each other in marriage, the sabbath is the sign of the covenant that God has made with all of us through creation. The sabbath rest is meant to remind us that we are creatures, and God is God. Sabbath is a gift to us. The Sabbath is a foreshadowing of heaven for us. Heaven is perfect, and creation ends in perfection. On the seventh day, there is Total peace total harmony. Everything in its right place, and the Sabbath is participating in that. God gives his people rest. God wants us to be free from worry and stress and anxiety. One day of the week when we can be a people set free, and the seventh day is a day to just experience heaven on earth

Everything has its right place. Our place is over creation but under God, and the Sabbath is a weekly reminder of that.

VIDEO GAMES AND ITS EFFECTS ON OUR KIDS AND CULTURE Phillipians 4:8 – “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is

admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” 81% of youth play video games at least once per month and in 2007 about 10% of them were addicted. The average 8-18 year old plays between 13-14 hours of video games per week (Metrics 2.0, 2007). While some video games have educational value, violent games are becoming increasingly popular. Studies have shown the negative effects that violent video games have on kids. For example, Calvert and Tan found that students who played a violent virtual reality game had a higher heart rate, reported more dizziness and nausea, and exhibited more aggressive thoughts than those who played a non-violent video game (Cesarone, 1998 and Anderson & Bushman, 2001). These studies are able to show violent video games lead to behavioral changes and more aggressive patterns. Kids are spending more time playing games rather than physically participating in play outside. This leads to all sorts of issues including a lack of physical fitness and increased risk for health problems later in life, obesity, pent up anger and frustration with no physical outlet to release it and a lack of social life. By spending much of their time on video games kids are not going out and participating in physical activities that will keep them fit and healthy. This mindset leads to laziness. The more lazy one becomes the harder it is to get him/her to participate in physical activity. It becomes a downward spiral spinning out of control. Some video games are set-up to be beneficial for kids, such as educational enhancement or simulation games. Being able to follow directions, strategy, anticipation, quantitative calculations, pattern recognition, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skill development and spatial relations are potential benefits. Unlike TV that is receptive, video games are interactive requiring the player to take an active role engaging the mind. Also, video games have shown to be beneficial to brain development and certain disorders such as attention deficit disorder (ADD and ADHD), dyslexia, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress syndrome and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. Where the real danger lies in video games is when reality and fantasy are confused and when video games teach kids the wrong values. For example, if violent behavior, aggression and vengeance are rewarded and negotiation and other non-violent solutions are not options then this may lead to vice rather than virtue. Also, some video games portray women in a way that invites young males to use them as objects. Reality is where I work out my salvation. I meet other people and begin a relationship with them starting with a relationship with God. Video game abuse is an alternate reality where I can pretend that I don’t have any other relationships to be responsible to, only myself. This is like Hell. Video games are not inherently evil. However, they should be vehemently supervised by parents and limits are strongly encouraged. Moderation is always a good virtue. Playing video games all day not only affects relationships but also creativity. Games that have inappropriate content should be forbidden. Some games offer kids the opportunity to take pleasure in violence against another person. But, Catholic morality tells us that we should never take pleasure in being entertained by the depiction of violence against another person. Oftentimes the real point of video games is to escape reality by having fun as often as possible. This is dangerous and toxic. It should be taken in small and rare doses if at all. God is encountered only in reality. Those enslaved by these games cannot encounter God unless they return to the real world where God is. A steady diet of video games with its loud and sometimes obnoxious music can fill time better spent praying and listening for the still, quiet voice of God. Finally, parents should also be aware that many exorcists have been called to duty because of people addicted to video games. In an interview from the Christian Review in 2015, the interviewer asked Fr. Gary Thomas, an exorcist from San Jose, CA “What brings about demonic involvement? What should be avoided?” Fr. Thomas answered “Ouija boards, dark magic, séances, violent video games, the Charley Challenge, tarot cards, pornography, abortion, assisted suicide, any devices that can muster some kind of spirit in any way that circumvents God.” It would be healthy for parents to ask what the games their kids play are doing to their minds, hearts and souls? Perhaps more important than the video games themselves is how we as parents raise our children in the faith while setting clear boundaries. May God bless you!
