13th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

The Lord is going up to Jerusalem, where the cross and death await Him. However, the evangelist tells us that “He resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem” (Lk 9:51). He is determined to go because He knows that after the cross comes the resurrection, that “it was necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into His glory” (Lk 24:26).

The disciples still don’t understand what this is about, and try to invoke fire from heaven against the Samaritans who rejected them (9:54). Others say they want to follow Him, but place their personal interests first. The Lord warns these latter ones that “the one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what is left behind is not fit for the kingdom of God” (9:62).

Let us ask ourselves today in which of these groups do we belong. Are we looking for power to do away with our enemies? Do we put our interests first, rather than listen to God’s call? Or, like Jesus, do we journey determinedly to where He sends us, even if this means the cross? Let us ask the Lord for the strength and the courage to follow Him.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the consecration of our parish’s altar, June 30, 1960. We will be able to obtain a plenary indulgence by fulfilling the necessary conditions. Let us avail ourselves of this great blessing. God bless you

Reflexión Dominical El Señor se dirige a Jerusalén, donde le esperan la cruz y la

muerte. Sin embargo, nos dice el evangelista que “emprendió decidido el viaje a Jerusalén” (Lc 9,51). Va decidido porque sabe que después de la cruz viene la resurrección, que “es necesario que el Mesías padezca para entrar en su gloria” (Lc 24,26).

Los discípulos aún no entienden de qué se trata y quieren responder al rechazo de los samaritanos invocando fuego del cielo (9,54). Otros dicen que quieren seguirlo, pero anteponen a ello sus propios intereses. A estos el Señor les advierte que “el que ha puesto la mano en el arado y mira atrás, no es apto para el reino de Dios” (9,62).

Preguntémonos hoy en cuál de estos grupos estamos. ¿Buscamos poder para eliminar a los enemigos? ¿Anteponemos nuestros intereses a la invitación de Dios? ¿O, como Jesús, nos dirigimos decididos a donde Él nos envía, aunque esto implique la cruz? Pidamos al Señor que nos dé la fuerza y el valor para seguirlo.

Hoy celebramos el aniversario de la consagración del altar de nuestra parroquia el 30 de junio de 1960. Podremos obtener una indulgencia plenaria, cumpliendo las condiciones necesarias. Aprovechemos esta gran bendición. Que Dios los bendiga.

Matrimonios en Victoria sponsored a talk by Fr. Rafael Abreu about healing relationships in marriage. It was open to all parishioners and was very well attended. They also held a Holy Hour to pray for all families in the parish and in the city as part of their apostolic ministry. Their meetings have recessed until August.

Catholic Devotions: The Angelus CHRISTIANS HAVE ALWAYS paused for prayer at the noon hour. In apostolic

times, it was called the prayer of the “sixth hour,” counting from sunrise. St. Peter was praying the noontime prayers when he received a revelation from the Lord (Acts 10:9). It was also at the sixth hour that Jesus was crucified (Lk 23:44)…. The early Christians remembered these biblical events and precedents as they offered their customary midday prayers.

We can also grow weary midway through our daily struggles. So we pause at midday to renew our flagging efforts in prayer. The traditional Catholic midday prayer [although some also pray it in the early morning and in the evening] is called the Angelus, [and consists] of verses with responses, each followed by the recitation of the Hail Mary.

The verses and responses are scriptural, drawn from the story of Jesus’ conception as told in the Gospels of Luke (1:26-28 and 1:38) and John (1:14). Thus, at the turning point of our day, we remember the turning point of human history: the moment when an angel appeared to a young woman named Mary and told her of God’s plan to send the Messiah to the world as her child. All subsequent history, and all of creation, turned on her consent.

If we are growing weak or weary at midday, or ... discouraged ... we can look to Mary and know that we, too, can rely on the help of the angels and the providence of God, who has a plan for us.

Devociones Católicas: El Angelus LOS CRISTIANOS SIEMPRE se han detenido para orar al mediodía. En tiempos

apostólicos, esta era llamada la oración de la “hora sexta”, a partir de la salida del sol. San Pedro se encontraba orando a dicha hora cuando recibió una revelación del Señor (Hechos 10,9). Es también a la hora sexta que Jesús fue crucificado (Lc 23,44). (…) Los primeros cristianos recordaban estos eventos cuando ofrecían sus oraciones del mediodía.

También nosotros podemos sentir el cansancio de la lucha diaria y nos detenemos a mediodía para renovar nuestros débiles esfuerzos en la oración. La oración católica tradicional al mediodía [aunque algunos también la recitan temprano en la mañana y al atardecer] es el Angelus, que consiste en tres antífonas con sus respuestas seguidas del rezo del Ave María.

Estas antífonas y respuestas son sacadas de la escritura, de la narración de la concepción de Jesús en los evangelios de Lucas (1,26-28 y 1,38) y Juan (1,14). Así, en la mitad del día, recordamos el evento que partió en dos la historia humana, cuando el ángel se apareció a una joven llamada María y le anunció el plan de Dios de enviar al Mesías al mundo nacido de ella. Toda la historia y toda la creación estaban pendientes de su consentimiento.

Si al mediodía nos sentimos cansados, débiles o desanimados (…) podemos mirar a María y saber que también nosotros contamos con la ayuda de los ángeles y que la providencia de Dios tiene un plan para nosotros.

The Blesseds /Los Beatos BLESSED NATALIA TULASIEWICZ (1906-1945) — Polish

unmarried laywoman, she was a teacher in Poznan and very active in her parish.

During the Nazi occupation of Poland, with the accompanying attempts to exterminate Poland’s Jewish community and those Christians opposed to the Nazi cause, Natalia became a member of the Polish underground.

In 1943, she volunteered to travel into the Third Reich in order to give spiritual comfort to women who were sentenced to hard labor. She was arrested, tortured, subjected to public ridicule, and ultimately sentenced to death in the concentration camp in Ravensbrück, Germany.

On Good Friday, 1945, she climbed on a stool in the barracks and spoke of the meaning of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. Two days later, on Easter Sunday, March 31, she died in the gas chambers. She was beatified in 1999 together with 107 Polish martyrs of World War II.

BEATA NATALIA TULASIEWICZ (1906-1945) — Laica polaca, maestra en Poznan y muy activa en su parroquia. Durante la ocupación Nazi en Polonia que intentó exterminar a la comunidad judía y a aquellos cristianos opuestos a su causa, Natalia se hizo miembro de la resistencia polaca.

En 1943 se ofreció de voluntaria para viajar al Tercer Reich y dar apoyo y consuelo espiritual a las mujeres que habían sido sentenciadas a trabajos forzados. Allí fue arrestada, torturada y sometida al ridículo público, para por fin ser condenada a muerte en el campo de concentración de Ravensbrück, Alemania.

El Viernes Santo de 1945, subida en un banquito en una de las barracas, habló sobre el significado de la Pasión y Resurrección de Jesús. Dos días más tarde, Domingo de Pascua, murió en las cámaras de gas. Fue beatificada en 1999, junto con otros 107 mártires polacos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

It is God who sanctifies, who transforms us with his love,

but at the same time we too, with our witness, manifest

God’s holiness in the world, making his name present.

God is holy, but if we, if our life is not holy, there is great

inconsistency! God’s holiness must be reflected in our

actions, in our life….

God’s holiness is an expanding force, and we ask that the

barriers in our world be quickly broken down…. Prayer

drives away all fears. The Father loves us; the Son lifts up

his arms to support ours; the Spirit works secretly for the redemption of the

world. And we? We do not waver in uncertainty; for we have one great

certainty: God loves me; Jesus gave his life for me! The Spirit is within me. This

is the great certainty. And the evil one? He is afraid. And this is good.

Es Dios quien nos santifica, quien nos transforma con su amor, pero al mismo

tiempo también somos nosotros quienes, a través de nuestro testimonio,

nosotros? Nosotros no vacilamos en la incertidumbre, sino que tenemos una

certeza: Dios me ama; Jesús ha dado la vida por mí. El Espíritu está dentro de

mí. Y esta es la gran cosa cierta. ¿Y el mal? Tiene miedo. Y esto es hermoso.

An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins that have

already been forgiven in the sacrament of Reconciliation. The Christian faithful who are rightly

disposed and observe the prescribed conditions gain this remission for themselves or for their

deceased relatives and/or friends.

A plenary indulgence is granted to those who devoutly visit a church or altar on the day of its

dedication and recite there the Our Father and the Creed. The altar of our parish church was

consecrated on June 30, 1960, and St. Hugh was officially established as a parish on that day.

Therefore, this Sunday we will be able to obtain a plenary indulgence at St. Hugh.

Other conditions to be observed in order to obtain a plenary indulgence include sacramental

confession, reception of Holy Communion and praying an Our Father and Hail Mary for the intentions

of the Holy Father, with sacramental confession taking place within 20 days of this date.

Let us avail ourselves of the graces that the Church puts at our disposal through the spiritual goods

of the communion of saints, the Church’s treasury.

Una indulgencia es la remisión ante Dios de la pena temporal por los pecados ya perdonados en

el sacramento de la Reconciliación. Los fieles cristianos debidamente dispuestos y que cumplan las

condiciones prescritas obtienen esta remisión para sí mismos o para sus familiares y amigos

difuntos.

Se concede indulgencia plenaria a quienes piadosamente visiten una iglesia o altar, en el

mismo día de su dedicación y recen allí el Padrenuestro y el Credo. El altar de nuestra parroquia

fue consagrado el 30 de junio de 1960, fecha en que San Hugo quedó establecida oficialmente

como parroquia. Por lo tanto, este domingo podemos obtener la indulgencia plenaria aquí.

Otras condiciones que deben observarse para obtener la indulgencia plenaria incluyen la

confesión sacramental, recepción de la Sagrada Comunión y el rezo del Padre Nuestro y Ave

María por las intenciones del Santo Padre. La confesión sacramental debe tener lugar dentro de
