Prayer for Vocations

In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the parish are always invited to remain in the church follow-ing Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time after Mass

for parishioners to focus their prayer on vocations. Fol-lowing the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, our needs are great

and our people hunger to hear the Gospel

proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.

Send the power of your Holy Spirit to

encourage men and women to open their

hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve

in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,

deacons, religious and lay ministers.

May those who minister now be filled with

Your Spirit of courage and love. May they

persevere in their call to serve Your people.

Grant that many will be inspired by their

witness and love to answer Your call.

Amen

Cemetery Collection Every year at this time there is an appeal made to the parish on be-half of Sacred Heart Cemetery. Every time a cemetery plot is sold some of the income from that sale is put aside for Perpetual Care. You can imagine that the Perpetual Care money collected decades ago would not be near adequate for current day expenses of maintenance for the cemetery, let alone for improvements. The burial of the dead is a pious and holy thing, as is the care of their buried remains. The cemetery is a holy and sacred place, as it claims our bodies until the Resur-rection. Letters for the appeal were mailed recently. Your generous response for Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery will be greatly appreciated.

An unprecedented opportunity for all 16-29 year olds.

Pope Francis wants to hear from you! The theme of the next world Synod of Bishops in 2018 is “Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment.” To prepare for this Synod, Pope Francis wants to hear the opinions and experiences of 16-29 year olds. The Vatican recently launched an online survey where young people can respond to questions. All responses will be compiled and used as a focus for the Synod proceedings. The survey is open for the next couple of months and can be accessed at https://survey-synod2018.glauco.it/limesurvey/index.php/147718. (Respondents will need to se-lect “English” in the upper right hand corner of the webpage.)

Magnificat Ordering Information It is time to sign up for the Magnificat. Will you please

let Kay Fisher know by July 1st if you want to subscribe or renew. The cost is determined by the number of sub-scriptions sent to the parish. When that number is tallied you can make a check for the correct amount to Sacred

Heart by July 10th. If you have any questions, please stop by the library or call 641-792-2863. Single copies at the book store: $5.95 Single subscription $44.95( $3.45) 10-39 = $34.95- sent to the Church ( $2.70) 40-99 = $29.95 sent to the Church ($2.30) . It would be great to have at least 40 subscriptions. From 2015-17 we have had 36.

PS. The Magnificat subscription comes in 13 not 12 issues.

Life After Loss

I know now that we never get over great losses;

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s Gospel, Jesus minces no words: “whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” Few of us will be called to die the way Jesus did. But to be his disciples means having the willingness to lay down our lives with thima nd for him. Exercising good stewardship of the Gospel requires taking up one’s cross daily and following Jesus. There will be dying to do on our way to the Father. It could be unfair treatment, health problems, fatigue, frustration at work, failed relationships, loneliness or sadness. If we, like Jesus, encounter and ac-cept suffering, we will bring the hope of the cross to oth-ers. There is no cross the Lord’s love cannot transcend. In your reflections this week, consider how your cross, no matter how heavy, might become an instrument of hope and Christ’s love.

Lotsa Helping Hands Meals Ministry

Sacred Heart Church is in need of vol-unteers to OCCASIONALLY be asked to donate cookies or bars for social activities at church or to make a

meal for families in need, those celebrating the birth of a child, for church social activities, and/or

funerals. We have become partners with a website that will send a request to your email when there is a need. If you want to help, all you need to do is to reply to the email once it is sent out. If you are unable to help, then you don't need to do anything for that request. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. To have your name added to the list of people who would be willing to help out by preparing food, just send your name and email address to Tina Stammeyer at [email protected] and a link will be sent to you to sign up. Thank you for helping us to meet the needs of the parish through this volunteer ministry.

If my fiancé and I abstain from sex, why

can’t we live together before we get mar-

ried?

It seems to me there are two reasons living with your future spouse before marriage is not a good idea.

One is that you are setting each other up for some serious temptations, or an “occasion of sin.” It would be similar to putting a bottle of gin on the desk of an alcoholic or a carton of ciga-rettes in front of someone who has succeeded in giving up smoking. I’m not saying you have some sort of addiction, but the natural pull of sex is going to be particularly strong, especially when you’re young, in love, and ready to commit to marriage. You will be free and even encouraged in marriage to pursue the greatest intimacy. But for the moment, it is asking too much to put you both in the same circumstances now that you will be in after you wed. The second reason for not living together before marriage is that the living situation could give scandal to others. If you are active in your church and vocal about practicing your Catholic faith but then start living with your future spouse before marriage, it can raise questions (and eyebrows) about what you really believe and how you’re living your faith. There may be some good-sounding reasons for liv-ing together. You can cut down on costs, get to know your future spouse better, and so on. But these reasons aren’t worth the risk. My advice is that you help each other live a virtuous life now, by sacrificing the convenience of living together outside of marriage, as the best practice for your life to-gether in the sacrament of matrimony.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. Though he was never ordained a priest his life of holi-ness has led millions of men to the priest-hood and women to the religious life. The

Life of St. Francis by St Bonaventure shows us how this came to be.This biography written only 30 years after St. Francis’s death describes the many miracles attributed to St. Francis during his life. More importantly the biography shows the operation of the Spirit of God , both in the subject and in the writer. It offers the reader a depth of the Love of God by both Francis and Bonaventure. It is easy to com-prehend how men and women through the centuries sought the Franciscan religious life to capture this understanding. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

July 2, 2017 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

2 Kgs 4:8-1, 14-16a, Rom 6:3-4, 8-11, Mt 10:37-42

A priest friend of mine visited a family with several sons thinking about the priestly vocation. During his visit he celebrated mass for them at the local parish. The gospel reading was the same as today: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me….” My friend thought twice before reading it afraid that the father who wasn’t open to his sons’ vocations would think he picked this passage on purpose. He read it anyway and, yes, got the reaction he suspected he’d get. Most words in the Gospels are challenging. Jesus calls us to love him above all things. This means he has to come first, and sometimes other loves, as good as they are, cannot be the ultimate critcria. He tells us to “lose

our life” to find it, and sometimes that loss is real and painful. He demands this because he himself experienced its truth. In this public ministry, he put his mission and love of souls ahead of spending more time with family and friends. When religious leaders, government officials, and others criti-cized and persecuted him, he didn’t back down, even if it af-fected his loved ones. He was faithful in charity. He didn’t look for problems, but he didn’t run form them, either. He avoided unnecessary conflict when he could, but he completely obeyed God’s will and embraced the hardships of loving until the end. This kind of sacrifice brings great joy in endured with acceptance. As Romans tells us, “If, then, we have died with Christ, ...we shall also live with him.”

For Reflection How can I live my life as though nothing is more important than Jesus? Do I regularly witness to my love for Jesus, using words when necessary?
