JUNE IS “LEAVE A LEGACY” month in the Diocese of Norwich. It is a wonderful time to remind parishioners in the Diocese about the value of charitable estate planning. Some people choose to mark their legacy by requesting gifts made in memoriam to their parish, school, ministry or the Diocese in lieu of flowers upon their passing. Others include a bequest in their Will to their favorite Catholic organization. Still others are interested in establishing an endowment with the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich to benefit a Diocesan organization. If you are interested in learning more about how you can leave your legacy and support all the good works that the Church is involved with, please contact Mary Ellen Mahoney, Executive Director of Development, at (860) 886-1928 or [email protected].

MOST REVEREND

MICHAEL R. COTE, D.D. June 2019 To be printed in the parish bulletins or read in all parishes on the weekend of June 22-23 and June 29-30, 2019.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As you are already aware, our diocese and many dioceses around the country are dealing with declining numbers of both priests and parishioners. Consequently, we must plan for the future as best we can, based on the projected number of priests available to minister, as well as the number of people in our parishes. The Diocese of Norwich began the process several years ago with the clustering of parishes, and then the yoking of parishes, and some mergers in which one parish closed. As was done last year, we are looking again at the merger of parishes, but without closing church buildings. This option has been used in many dioceses. The result of such mergers is that one parish has two or more worship sites, or churches. By merging two or more parishes into one parish with multiple worship sites, we simplify the many administrative tasks involved in parish life, and minimize, we hope, the disruption of parishioners’ regular schedule of religious practice. This year in the Diocese of Norwich, the following parishes will be merged. 1. St. Mary, Putnam with St. Stephen, Quinebaug, St. Joseph, N. Grosvenordale and Most Holy Trinity, Pomfret The newly merged parish will be St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Putnam. 2. St. Joseph, Willimantic with St. Mary, Willimantic and Sagrado Corazon, Windham The newly merged parish will be Corpus Christi Parish, Willimantic. 3. St. Augustine, Canterbury with St. John, Plainfield and All Hallows, Moosup The newly merged parish will be St. Andre Bessette Parish, Plainfield. 4. St. Michael, Pawcatuck with St. Mary, Stonington and St. Thomas More, N. Stonington The newly merged parish will be St. Michael Parish, Pawcatuck. 5. St. Matthew, Tolland with St. Bernard, Rockville The newly merged parish will be Blessed Sacrament Parish, Rockville. These mergers will become effective on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. Through a more measured approach to the restructuring of the parishes in our diocese we hope to be more sensitive to the deep feelings of attachment our people have to their parishes. As our diocese continues to move forward in pastoral planning, let us join together in prayer and in action, praying for each other, and working toward our goal of vital, vibrant parishes. Let us always remember to pray for each other as we journey together into a future bright with promise and filled with an abundance of God’s grace.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Bishop of Norwich
