Dear Parishioners, This Sunday we return to Ordinary Time of the Liturgical Year
and that means the Gospel of focus for Year C is from St
Luke.
To call these weeks “ordinary” should not imply that this is a
dull and uneventful season. Every Sunday is a celebration
of the paschal mystery, but the Sundays of the festal sea-
son of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter focus on specific
aspects of Christ’s mystery. The Sundays of Ordinary Time
embody the ancient tradition of the Church’s celebration
of the Lord’s Day before the development of the cycle of
solemnities and feasts.
Luke is a doctor and is addressed as the “beloved physi-
cian” by St Paul, to whom he was a friend and disciple.
Luke’s medical background plays out in his descriptions of
the various bodily miracles and the compassion of the Lord
Jesus to those who suffered. Luke is from the Greek world.
He was a Gentile and a non-Jew.
The ‘social’ gospel of Luke lays before us the practical
meaning of following Christ. Luke outlines the role of the
disciple and the cost of discipleship in our loving response
to the needy and the outcast of society. Luke assures us
that the Holy Spirit is always with us as we try to become
Good News for our world.

Last Sunday, as a Parish community, parishioners from
both of our parishes took part in a public procession of
the Blessed Sacrament (Corpus Christi Procession) and
joined with thousands on the streets of Brisbane to cel-
ebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi at the Cathedral.
Pope Francis last Sunday said ‘The Lord comes to our
streets in order to speak a blessing for us and to give us
courage. He asks that we too be blessing and gift for
others.’

READINGS AT MASS
Entrance Antiphon Ps 46: 2
All peoples, clap your hands.
Cry to God with shouts of joy!
First reading 1 Kings 19:16,19-21
The Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go, you are to anoint Elisha son of
Shaphat, of Abel Meholah, as prophet to succeed you.’
Leaving there, Elijah came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he
was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen, he himself being
with the twelfth. Elijah passed near to him and threw his
cloak over him. Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let
me kiss my father and mother, then I will follow you’ he said.
Elijah answered, ‘Go, go back; for have I done anything to
you?’ Elisha turned away, took the pair of oxen and slaugh-
tered them. He used the plough for cooking the oxen, then
gave to his men, who ate. He then rose, and followed Elijah
and became his servant.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 15(16):1-2,5,7-11
You are my inheritance, O Lord
Second reading Galatians 5:1,13-18
When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm,
therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.
My brothers, you were called, as you know, to liberty; but be
careful, or this liberty will provide an opening for self-
indulgence. Serve one another, rather, in works of love, since
the whole of the Law is summarised in a single command:
Love your neighbour as yourself. If you go snapping at each
other and tearing each other to pieces, you had better
watch or you will destroy the whole community.
Let me put it like this: if you are guided by the Spirit you will
be in no danger of yielding to self-indulgence, since self-
indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit, the Spirit is totally
against such a thing, and it is precisely because the two are
so opposed that you do not always carry out your good in-
tentions. If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you.
Gospel Acclamation 1 Sam 3:9; John 6:68c
Alleluia, alleluia!
Speak, O Lord, your servant is listening;
you have the words of everlasting life.
Alleluia!
Gospel Luke 9:51-62
As the time drew near for him to be taken up to heaven, Je-
sus resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messen-
gers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Sa-
maritan village to make preparations for him, but the people
would not receive him because he was making for Jerusa-
lem. Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, ‘Lord, do
you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?’
But he turned and rebuked them, and they went off to an-
other village.
As they travelled along they met a man on the road who
said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus an-
swered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me’, replied, ‘Let me go
and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead
to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of
the kingdom of God.’
Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and
say goodbye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him,
‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back
is fit for the kingdom of God.’
Communion Antiphon Cf. Ps 102: 1
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all within me, his holy name.

Why is God so Demanding?
This Sunday’s gospel is scary, isn’t it? One of Jesus’ fol-
lowers asked Him if he could bury his father first, but Jesus quickly
said, “Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and
spread the news of the Kingdom of God.”
Sometimes following God can be so challenging that it seems
easier to give up. Wouldn’t it be easier if you can gossip about
whoever you want to, or watch whatever you want to, or party
as much as you want to, without feeling guilty that you may be
disappointing God?
I believe God has such high expectations on us because he
wants us to be free. But you may ask, “If God wants us to be free,
why can’t I always do what I want?” Let’s look at social media.
How long can you last without checking your phone? Sure, our
phones can make life more convenient, but how much of our
phone usage is actually helping us live more fulfilling lives?
This year, two friends and I decided to give up video games,
Netflix, snacks, desserts, social media and a whole list of other
things for 90 days. Was it crazy? Of course! Did we stumble? Yep!
It was a challenge, but it was a rewarding challenge. Because
we weren’t always on our phones, we spent more time with
loved ones. Because we didn’t binge on Netflix, we spent more
time with God. Because we weren’t always eating snacks and
sweets, we became healthier, happier people.
Our God isn’t about instant pleasures. He wants us to receive
long term freedom from the things that, although may feel good
in the moment, turn us into slaves in the long run.
What are you a slave to? What can’t you give up? When was
the last time you spent time with loved ones without glancing at
your phone? Reflect on this and be honest with yourself. Then,
pray to God to help set you free. What’s impossible in our eyes is
possible with God’s love. David Bobis
