February 3, 2013 My brothers and sisters in Christ, as Jesus began his ministry, he said these words, “Today this scripture has been

fulfilled in your hearing.” The fulfilment of the Scripture is that Jesus has come to redeem the world and to reconcile humanity to God. This mission/ministry would not be an easy one, for just as he was to start he encountered those who would want to place obstacles in his way. The reading from the Gos-pel speaks volume to that fact, as he was carried to “be hurled off the cliff.”

Jesus’ ministry began at his youth with his birth, so too is our ministry which came with our baptism. All of us are called to be agents of the Good News of salvation, as seen in the call of Jeremiah; “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” Because all of us have been called, we ought to respond but many will not. For those who have responded, the task ahead will not be easy, for doing God’s will persecution is part of the blessing. “Blessed are those who are perse-cuted for righteousness sake, rejoice and be exceed-ingly glad for great is your reward in heaven.”

The challenges ahead for the Christian is not an easy one, but if like Jesus we allow ourselves to be “anointed by the Holy Spirit” we will be able to over-come them and the obstacles in our path to the King-dom of God on the last day.

Are we willing to answer the call of God on our lives, to be his agent of change in this difficult time and world? May we respond as Jeremiah did and be em-powered to “pluck up, pull down, destroy, overthrow, build up and plant to do God’s will.

Yours in Christ.

Fr. Barry
