Field News from Bucharest, RomaniaMy heart is broken for the older generation. I love talking to these men and women who have survived the horrors of

more than 40 years of Communism after the war. I talk to them every week in the parks of Bucharest. Some were the victims and others the victimizers or informers. But in reality, all were victims of something so evil that we can hardly imagine it. There are those who betrayed their neighbors and their close friends to the Securitate, the Communist secret police, to protect their families. And there are those who even betrayed their own family members to protect themselves. They were threatened by an evil government and they were trapped in fear. “Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”

Today, these same men and women walk and talk with friends in the parks, they shop in the markets and laugh and share stories with their grandchildren. They live! Then, there are those who suffered the prisons, the beatings, the memories of family members disappearing or being killed; and memories of being betrayed. And they also live!

As I walk among these people every day, whether sitting next to them on the park benches, in the metros or on the crowded buses, I see in their eyes untold stories, and I am broken. I love all of them, and pray for them to be able to hear and taste and see that the Lord is good – to hear about a Love and forgiveness so unspeakably deep and powerful, the greatest power on the earth, that sets the captives FREE! Whether bound in incredible guilt and shame, or bound in deep sorrow and bitterness, HE alone can set them free because of Calvary. So, I pray. And God gives us great opportunities to share His love.

I thought of those who betrayed Jesus. Judas betrayed Him. He brought the “Securitate” to Jesus and they arrested Him. Peter betrayed Him. He watched the “Securitate” take Jesus away while he warmed his hands by the fire; just watching, just warming. But then, there was the “look”. Peter looked into the eyes of Perfect Love and he knew. - In this world, I want to see what God sees, I want to look as He looked. A look can be greater than words.

My dream is to go to visit a woman who is now in her 90s. She lives about 8 or 9 hours from Bucharest by train. She lived in Bucharest during the communist era. She was a member of the Securitate and she is the great aunt of a friend of mine. Her job was to make up daily lists of people who would be arrested, imprisoned or worse. This woman did her job and undoubtedly she lived, day and night, under the incredible fear of what would happen to her if she didn’t comply. Fear with torment. In the end, her loyalty to her job and her government was betrayed when the Securitate killed her husband. In the end there was still the torment.

After I heard her story, I couldn’t get this woman out of my mind. She’s a real person, with a real family – family that I know. And she’s still alive at 90+ years. And she is just one of thousands with a similar story. My heart ached and my throat was sore from silently crying each night, crying for her and for thousands more like her that I pass on the streets every day.

I approached my friend, “Can we find your aunt? Can we call and visit her?” She hadn’t seen her for more than 20 years since she was a little girl. She began making calls and finally had an answer; auntie is in a far away nursing home in Northern Romania. That day, we made the call. A nurse answered and confirmed that her auntie lived there. We both spoke to her on the phone! I could hardly believe the joy of talking to her – unspeakable joy! She remembered her niece and they reminisced, even remembering a polka dot dress she had bought for her when she was a little girl! She said, “Oh, my dear Roxi! I have a picture of you on my bedside table. But I never thought I would hear from you again!” Roxi told her that we were praying for her. She was so grateful. When I spoke to her, I could only say, “I love you” and “Jesus loves you” in her language. But that day she had the joy of knowing that someone cared about her and loved her with His love. She acknowledged that she had lived a very hard life. The last thing she said to her niece that day was, “Roxi, if I’m still alive in the spring, will you come to visit?”
