MissionandPlanning
ThecurrentmissionoftheSustainabilityAdvisoryCommittee(SAC)includesthefollowingpoints:Tothisend,theCollege,withthedirectsupportoftheSustainabilityAdvisoryCommittee,willworkto:
• Facilitatetheestablishmentofacademiccoursesandothercurricularandco-curricularprogramsrelatedtoenvironmentalsustainability.
• Offeradviceandhaveaseatatthetableregardingtheplanningandimplementationofenvironmentallysustainablepracticesinourfacilities,operations,andcapitalprojects,andinthecampusmasterplanningprocess.
• Worktoraisetheenvironmentalandsustainabilityawarenessofallmembersofthecampuscommunitythroughcurriculum,programs,specialeventsandinitiatives,andthroughthecollection,analysis,anddisseminationofinformationontheCollege’senergyandresourceuseandoverallcarbonfootprint.
• Fosterenvironmentalstewardshipandencourageresponsibleconsumption.

SUMMARYOFACTIVITIESANDRECOMMENDEDACTIONITEMS
TheyearbeganwithaSustainabilityAdvisoryCommittee(SAC)OpenMeetinginSeptemberof2014.Membersofthecommitteereportedtothecampuscommunitytheactivitiesofthepreviousyearandsoughtinputforfutureprojects.
2014-15Activities:EarthDays2015
WithBeckyUrbanonsabbaticalinSpring2015,MikeSchroederledtheEarthDaysPlanningCommittee,workingwithMichelleKrallandothervolunteers.EarthDaysactivitieswerespreadoutfromlateMarchuntillateApril,makingitthemostextensivesetofEarthDay-relatedactivitiestodate.Theseactivitiesweresuccessfullyexecutedandwell-receivedbyallinattendance.Someactivitiesincluded:
• Apublicdebateonfracking(accessibleonYouTubeviatheEarthDaysArchive)• Aceremonialtreeplanting• “TheDeadZone”plasticartinstallationintheLynchHallAtrium• SustainabilityOratoricalContest

Studentswereencouragedtowritespeechesansweringthequestion:“Whatdoyouseeasthemostpressingenvironmentalsustainabilityissue(s)today?Why?Whatarethebestwaystoaddressthisissue,inyourview?”FinalistswerechosentopresenttheirspeechesonMarch17forthechancetowinaniPadMini(1stplace),a$100CollegeStoregiftcard(2ndplace),ora$50CollegeStoregiftcard(3rdplace).VictoriaGluszko’16wasthe2015firstplacewinnerforherspeechcritiquingtheinherentanthropocentrismofcontemporarydiscourseconcerningissuesofsustainability.Theeventwasrecorded,andcanbewatchedathttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoLNDYTtSoQ.

TheSACdevelopedacomprehensivelistofthe25mostimportantcampussustainabilityfactstopromoteandraiseawarenessaboutthesustainabilityinitiativesatLVC.ThesefactsweresharedwiththeAdministrationandwiththeValleyAmbassadorstoreferencewhilegivingtourstopotentialnewstudents.

UniversityPresidentsClimateCommitment
AdditionalresearchwasconductedontheAmericanCollegeandUniversityPresidentsClimateCommitment(ACUPCC).SigningtheClimateCommitmentwouldcommitLVCtoanumberofsustainabilitygoalsandinitiativesinadditiontowhatisalreadybeingdone.TheACUPCCwillcontinuetobeconsideredintothe2015-16year.Moreinformationcanbefoundathttp://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org.
RecommendedActionItems: Thefollowingisalistofrecommendationsfromthe2013-2014SustainabilityAdvisoryCommitteeAnnualReporttoshapethecommittee’s2014–2015agenda.Followingeachitemisalistingofactivitiesandinitiativesthatcorrespondtotherecommendation.
RecommendedAgendaItem:MissionUpdateReviewtheMissionoftheSACwiththeintentionofstrengtheningsupportoftheCollege’sEnvisionedFutureStrategicPlan.
Outcomes:TheCommitteereviewedandupdatedtheCommittee’smission,andagreedtocontinuethisprocessintothe2015-2016AcademicYear.Theco-chairsweretaskedtoworkonamemoduringthesummertobereviewedbytheCommitteeinFall2015.ThismemowillbethebasisformeetingwiththePresidentandSeniorStaffoftheCollege.
RecommendedAgendaItem:CMACSWorkwiththenewly-createdRegionalInstituteforMunicipalandCorporateSustainabilitytodevelopnewsustainability-relatedinitiatives,programmingandcurriculumatLVC.
Outcomes:TheCommitteeworkedwithCenterforMunicipalandCorporateSustainability(CMACS).TheCollegereceiveda$250,000grantfromtheDepartmentofCommunityandEconomicDevelopment(DCED)toforthecreationoftheCenter,andapreliminarysurveyofregionalmunicipalitieswascompletedtodefinetheCenter’sroleinmeetingtheregion’ssustainabilityneeds.Candidateswereinterviewed,andKarenFeatherwasrecommendedandselectedforthepositionofDirectorforCMACS.

APPENDIX A: 2013–2014 CARBON INVENTORY
Duringthe2014-2015schoolyear,acarboninventorywascompletedforthe2013-2014fiscalyearusingtheweb-basedCampusCarbonCalculator(CarbonManagementandAnalysisPlatform(CarbonMAP)poweredbySightlines.)Theapplicationbreaksdownemissionsintothreecategories:Scope1,Scope2,andScope3.Scope1emissionsaredirectemissionsthatcomefromsourcesthatareownedand/orcontrolledbyLebanonValleyCollege.Scope1emissionsforLVCresultfromfossilfuelandfertilizerusage.Thecampususesnaturalgasanddistillateoilforheatingbuildingswithmostbuildingsusingnaturalgas.DieselfuelandunleadedgasolineusedforrunningthecollegefleetalsofallintotheScope1category.RefrigerantsandotherchemicalswouldbeanothersourceofScope1emissions,butthecollegeensuresthatthesechemicalsareproperlycaredforandnotreleasedasemissions.Scope2emissionsareindirectemissionsfromsourcesthatarenotownedoroperatedbyLebanonValleyCollege.However,thesesourcesaredirectlylinkedtotheenergyusedbythecampus.WhiletheCollegeisnotdirectlyresponsiblefortheseemissions,theCollegerequiresthisenergytooperateandisresponsibleforthedemand.ForLebanonValleyCollege,purchasedelectricityistheonlysourceofscope2emissions.Scope3emissionsareallotheremissions.Theseemissionsaretypicallyconsideredas“optional”andarehardertoclassify.EithertheseemissionsaretheresultofdirectfinancingorencouragementoftheCollege,butarenotfromsourcesownedoroperatedbyLVC.Someexamplesofthiswouldbestudyabroadtravelandfaculty,staffandstudentcommuting.Theresponsibilityoftheseemissionsisunclearbutmustbecarefullymonitoredinordertoensuretheemissionsarenotcountedtwice.Duringthisreportingyear,wehavedecidedtoaccountforsportstravelviabusandvan.ThishasresultedinaslightincreaseinScope3emissionsaswellasamoreaccuratecarbonfootprint.
CarbonInventoryResultsSummary:Beforeanymitigationstrategies,totalemissionsfromallthreescopeswere6,094.38MTeCO2,orMetricTonsofCarbonDioxideEquivalents.Figure1,below,showsthebreakdownoftotalemissionsbyscope.Figure2providesamoredetailedbreakdownofemissionsbysources.DuetotheCollegepurchasing100%wind-generatedelectricity,Scope2emissionshavebeencompletelyeliminated.Lastyear,thiscategoryaccountedfor.03%ofthecollege’stotalemissions.

ThemostsignificantScope1emissions,producing2,017.02MTeCO2,comefromStationaryCombustion,whichincludesdistillateoilandnaturalgasmainlyusedforheatingcampusbuildings;thisnumberisslightlylowercomparedtolastyear,butthereisnosignificantchange.Approximately93.65%ofScope1emissionsisattributedtoStationaryCombustionandalsomakesup33.1%oftotalemissions.OverallScope1emissionsmadeup35.34%ofoverallemissionsandareequivalentto2,153.88MTeCO2.Scope2emissionsconsistsolelyofpurchasedelectricity,whichmakesup0%oftotalemissions.Inthepast,themajorityofourmitigationstrategieswereaimedatdecreasingtheelectricityemissionssinceitwassuchasignificantpartofLVC’scarbonfootprintandthecollegewasextremelysuccessful.Scope3emissionscontribute64.66%oftotalemissionsor3,940.51MTeCO2.ThemaincontributortoScope3emissionsisstudent,faculty,andstaffcommutingmakingup78.86%ofScope3emissions,with3,107.52MTeCO2,and50.99%oftotalemissions.Figure3:TotalEmissionsReductionsfrom2008-2014

Conclusion:Totalemissionsincreasedby298.91MTeCO2fromthepreviousfiscalyear,however,253.94MTeCO2oftheseemissionscanbeattributedbyathletictravel,whichhasnotbeenpreviouslyreported.Therefore,thereisnotasignificantdifferenceinoverallcarbonemissionscomparedtothe2012-2013fiscalyear.Inaddition,Scope2T&DLossesforthe2013-2014fiscalyeararezero,becausetheyarenownegligible;thisisduetothecollege’suseofwind-renewableenergy.Wealsonoticedthatthecollegeisnolongerpurchasingpaperwithapercentageofrecycledcontent.WerecommendtheCollegeonceagainpurchasepapermadefromrecycledcontent.

1. Speechesshouldbewrittenbasedonthecontesttopicandmustbeoriginalwork.AtleastoneaspectofthespeechmustaddresshowtoengagetheLVCstudentpopulationinfacingtheissueathand.Allfactsstatedinthespeechmustbereferenced,writteninthemanuscriptandorallycitedduringthedeliveryofthespeechinthefinalround.Thewrittenmanuscriptshouldbeaccompaniedbyabibliography.
2. Speechesshouldbe5-7minutesinlength.Contestantswillbepenalizediftheyareoutsideofthistimelimit.
