Sustainable Living Lab (SL2) is a social innova$on lab that harnesses the energy of the maker movement to build a Sustainable Future.

We build & maintain posi$ve social capital, work to protect & restore the natural environment and create economic ac$vity that is conducive to

sustainable human development.


About SL2

We view Sustainability as being comprised of 3 related components – environment, society and economy. This is also known as the “3 pillars model” of Sustainability.

Long-‐term thinking •  At the heart of the work that we do is long-‐term thinking. •  To achieve a Sustainable Future, we need to get into thinking

long-‐term. •  We work with many young people and it is hard for them to

picture why sustainability is important. •  That is why we engage with students in workshops and

programmes that allow them to exercise empathy, cri$cal thinking, planning and organiza$onal skills.

The Maker Culture is a global culture of hands-‐on innova$on powered by the Internet, commodi$za$on of technology, and a deep curiosity about the world.

Here are some of the youth makers that we have worked with over the years.

They possess a maker mindset that drives them to con$nuously beZer themselves and strive to

beZer humanity.


Ashprit Singh


•  Worked with SL2 for his NUS Engineering Final Year Project in community-‐level water purifica$on and distribu$on system back in 2012.

•  Has since started his own company, TinyMOS, a camera development company that has designed the world’s first portable commercial astronomy camera.

Anuar Hassan


•  Has been involved with SL2 since 2013 through a startup programme, #startable. •  A young entrepreneur who started Scalar Concept, a startup that designs and

Ken Chua


•  A fresh graduate of SUTD who started (these)abili$es, a startup that aims to ‘Disable Disabili$es’ through technology and design, crea$ng products meant for all to use.

•  Develop solu$ons WITH Persons with Disabili$es, not developing FOR them, in order to create products that truly benefit the community.

•  SL2 works with Ken as a mentor organisa$on.

Sam Bloch


•  Sam runs Communi$ere, a disaster relief organisa$on that operates makerspaces to help vic$ms of disasters literally rebuild their lives.

•  SL2 was involved in the build-‐up of their space in Tacloban City in the Philippines, where Typhoon Haiyan had struck.

SL2 Humanitarian Engineering Prac$cum

•  The Humanitarian Engineering Prac$cum started in 2012. •  Students go through disaster simula$on to empathize and discover the needs and

gaps in opera$ons and recovery during disasters. •  Over 8 sessions students will design, build and improve upon humanitarian

innova$ons. •  It is a great opportunity for students to empathize through experience and learn

through making.


Repair Kopi$am

•  Repair Kopi$am is an ini$a$ve to combat the buy-‐and-‐throw away culture. •  We do this by bringing the community together to learn and share how to repair at

public venues such as community centres and void decks. •  Such a programme has garnered the interest of many people of various backgrounds;

parents with children, re$rees and semi-‐re$rees, young execu$ves who seek more tangible experiences outside of work etc.

•  It is a great learning experience for anyone and everyone.


•  SL2 brings the Repair Kopi$am experience to schools through our Repair@School programmes.

•  Not ony do students learn technical and problem-‐solving skills in repair, they also learn and exercise communica$on skills as the programme open culminates in a sharing or teaching of skills at public Repair Kopi$am events.

As our organiza$on name suggests, we are a ‘lab’ and thus our work is experimental in nature. We seek to push the boundaries in

coming up with new and exci$ng programmes that would drive our youths towards a

Sustainable Future.
