1. LEARN AT LEAST TWO GAMES TO PLAY AT THE POOL OR BEACH.

2. UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A QUALIFIED INSTRUCTOR, LEARN TO USE A SWIM MASK, FINS, AND SNORKEL.

3. TRY A LONGER SWIM.

Swim at least a half mile. If you do this task in a pool, have someone walk on the deck alongside you. If you are swimming in a lake or large body of water, have someone follow alongside you in a row boat so they will be near by, able to help you, if needed.

4. THERE ARE MANY SWIMMING STROKES IN ADDITION TO THOSE REQUIRED IN

TASK 1.

Learn one additional stroke from a qualified instructor. Swim at least 50 yards using it.

Even the most qualified swimmer may end up stranded in the water. Learn a method for survival floating from a qualified instructor and practice it until you can demonstrate it proficiently.

Task 3Complete the following task.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

1. SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY.

Learn these safety rules and know why they are important.

THE DO’S:• Be sure a lifeguard is on duty before

going swimming. Follow any instructions given by the lifeguard. A lifeguard is a busy person doing an important job. Do not distract them.

• Swim with a partner.

• Stay in shallow water if you do not swim well. If you are floating on an inner tube or raft and lose it, you could be in trouble in deep water!

• Walk at all times when you are in the waterfront area. Never run!

• Leave glass items outside of the waterfront area.

THE DO NOT’S:• Do not throw anyone into the water

or hold a person under water.

• Do not dive into water of unknown depth.

• Do not dive if there are swimmers where you will enter the water.

• Do not swim or go out in a boat alone.

Body BasicsComplete at least TWO of the following tasks.

Soul QuestComplete at least ONE of the following tasks.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

1. GOING FOR A SWIM CAN BE A RELAXING WAY TO SPEND A WARM AFTERNOON.

Where is your favorite swimming spot and why?

Getting in too deep or attempting a swim beyond your skill level can quickly ruin the day.

Read Psalms 69:1-3. The writer is about to go under. You may never have been in this kind of danger in the water, but have found yourself overwhelmed in other ways. List five times you felt you were about to go under.

2. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN AFRAID AROUND THE WATER?

Maybe you can remember how you felt during your first swimming lesson or your first time diving into the deep end. Everyone is afraid sometimes. Read a story about a time the disciples were afraid in Mark 6:45-51.

Draw a chart, map or picture to show where Jesus and the disciples were in verses 45-47.

Describe (or draw) what the weather was like in verse 48.

Tell how Jesus responded when He saw the disciples in trouble (verse 48).

Which part of the story is most surprising?

Even though Jesus was not with the disciples, he could see the trouble they were in and went to help them. Tell how that makes you feel.

God is the ultimate lifeguard. Check out the writer’s prayer in verses Psalm 69:13-18. Underline the parts of the prayer that can help you the next time you are up to your neck in trouble.

2. EVEN WHEN EVERYONE FOLLOWS THE RULES, A PERSON COULD GET INTO DANGEROUS SITUATIONS AND NEED HELP.

Learn techniques from a qualified instructor that you can use to help a person who is in trouble.

– AND –Know the location and types of safety equipment located at the waterfront. Demonstrate the purpose for the equipment and how to use it.

FAITH AND THE SWIMMING POOLUSA Olympian Katie Ledecky began swimming at the age of six and won her first Olympic gold at the age of 15. Katie’s Christian faith has guided her through all her success. “My faith is very important to me. It is part of who I am. It helps me put things in perspective.” Before each swim heat, she says a pray. “I say a prayer — or two — before any race. The Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer and I find that it calms me.”
