Figure shows an example of N_Ports , F_Ports and E_Ports in a FibreChannel Switch Module connection.

Interoperability issues have to be considered when connecting FCswitches to each other.

Typically vendors are charging additional license fees for ISL and trunking

    capabilities.

Figure illustrates a port mapping example of a Intelligent Pass-thru Module that connects blade servers to the external fabric.

IPM transparently representsHBA N_Ports to the external

    Therefore Interoperabilityissues are eliminated.

    Nothing have to be changed.

    Everything is handled by the

    IPM.

    IPM Advantages

    IPM vs OPM

If you have large Fibre Channel fabrics using OPM

connections can yield a lot of cables , SFPs , andphysical ports (28 for each BladeCenter) if youchoose the use of OPMs.

IPM uses NPIV technology, which means that theinternal server ports (up to 14) are mapped to the

six external ports. Extensive cabling , largenumber of SFPs , and costly switch portlicenses are no longer required .

    IPM Advantages IPM vs FCSM

If you have large Fibre Channel fabrics using aFCSM can yield to a lot of domainadministration , where each switch gets its owndomain ID with the use of Fibre Channel switchmodules.

Due to the implementing of transparent switching, all standard management features , such asname server table , zoning , and domain ID

administration, are fully removed from theFCSM . This transparentness enables easyadministration by either a SAN or a server

    administrator .

Intelligent Pass-thru Module does not present aDomain

Only thing presented are the devices to the coreIn the IPM these are initiators.Management of the SAN is contained in the core

This allows the SAN administrator to have a much more

concentrated view of the management of the SAN for taskssuch as zone changes for backup and adding servers andstorage

Management considerations such as Name Server,

zone merges, and interoperability are contained in thecore thereby lessening the difficulty of management.
