• Originally invented as art of self-defence by Gautam Buddha.

• Martial arts shows life and prosperity.

• Besides teaching self-defense to protect ourselves and each other, martial arts also has great mental, physical and spiritual benefits.

Taekwondo : History

A Korean martial art form “Tae” meaning feet, “kwon”

means hand and “Do” mean the way.

World Taekwondo Federation(WTF) began in 1973, recognized by International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1980.

Declared in 1994 as an official sport in Olympics.

First Taekwondo appearance in Sydney Olympics, 2000.

Sparring

• The aim of taekwondo is to land as many kicks and blows as you can on your opponent in the allowed target areas.

• Done on a 10-square metre mat.

• Penalties for holding, pushing, hitting below belt, and turning one’s back on an opponent.
