Dear Parent or Guardian,

Many children experience learning losses when they don’t read during the summer. Our goal is to beat this “summer slide” by giving your child motivating books and materials for a Summer Reading Adventure!

Your child’s adventure pack has books and activities to encourage reading over the summer. We’ve chosen a variety of topics so your child can read fun stories and learn interesting information. Studies show that children who read four or more books over the summer do better on reading tests at the start of the new school year.

When your child fi nishes a book have him/her place a sticker on the “Reading Passport” reading log included in the pack. Then sign the box next to that title to confi rm the book was completed. You can add any additional books your child reads to the ‘passport’. Each child is expected to bring the completed “Reading Passport” reading log to school at the start of the new school year to share his/her Summer Reading Adventure with other students!

Ideas for reading with your child:

Read aloud to your child, even if your child reads independently. Have your child read to you or another family member. Bring books or magazines on car or train rides. Visit your local library or bookstores. Let your child choose books he/she likes to read.

Estimado padre o tutor: Muchos niños pierden práctica en lectura si no leen fuera de escuela. Nuestra meta es combatir ese “tobogán” dándole a su hijo libros y materiales que lo motiven a experimentar una Aventura de lectura.

El paquete de aventura de su hijo contiene libros y actividades para motivarlo a leer por sí mismos. Hemos escogido temas variados para que su hijo pueda leer historias divertidas y aprender cosas interesantes. Los estudios demuestran que los niños que leen libros fuera del aula tienen un mejor rendimiento en las pruebas de lectura.

Cuando su hijo termine un libro, pídale que pegue una estampilla en el registro de lectura “Pasaporte de lectura” incluido en el paquete. Después, firme usted en el cuadro que está junto al título del libro para confirmar que lo ha terminado de leer. Usted puede agregar al “pasaporte” el título de cualquier libro extra que su hijo lea.
