efficient operation of that asset in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
OPERATIONAL ASSURANCE
Is the act of providing assurance to the various stakeholders in a project or venture who
cannot wait until a project is completed, and handover to the operations team imminent, to
discover that something has been omitted or overlooked which would subsequently

Standards ensure desirable characteristics of products and services such as quality,
environmental friendliness, safety, reliability, efficiency and interchangeability and at an
economical cost. When products and services meet our expectations, we tend to take this
for granted and be unaware of the role of standards. However, when standards are absent,
we soon notice. We soon care when products turn out to be of poor quality, do not fit, are
incompatible with equipment that we already have, are unreliable or dangerous. When
products, systems, machinery and devices work well and safely, it is often because they
meet standards. And the organization responsible for many thousands of the standards
which benefit the world is ISO.

This International Standards covering environmental management are intended to provide
organizations with the elements of an effective environmental management system (EMS)
that can be integrated with other management requirements and help organizations

OHSAS 18001 & Goals of Risk Management
The Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, OHSAS 18000, has been
developed to help organizations control and minimize occupational health and safety risks.
OHSAS 18001 is a specific standard for occupational health and safety management
systems designed to eliminate or minimize the risk to employees and other interested
parties who may be exposed to occupational health and safety risks associated with the
business' activities. OHSAS 18001 is compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management
systems.
OHSAS 18001 represents a progression of a management system philosophy, from quality
to environmental, continuing to occupational health and safety. OHSAS 18001 focuses on
the identification, elimination, and continual improvement of hazards and risks within the
work environment. The OHSAS management system methodology is based on planning for
hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control. The OHSAS 18001 Health and
Safety Management System (HSMS) incorporate ISO management system elements to
address these risks.
Many organizations are implementing an Occupational Health and Safety
Management System (OHSMS) as part of their risk management strategy to address
changing legislation and protect their workforce.
OHSAS 18001 management system requirements:
Identification and evaluation of possible outcomes.
Development of controls.
Implementation of control and review adequacy of control.
Deming’s Cycle
Sets out requirements for OH&S management system.
Similar to ISO 9001 and 14001.
Not industry specific.
Describes good management practice but does not state how procedures and
controls are to be operated.
Does not state specific OH&S performance criteria.
Applicable to small or large organizations.
Applicable to any industry, organization or activities.
Establish an OH&S management system.
Implement, maintain and continually improve an OH&S management system.
Assure conformance with its stated OH&S policy.
Demonstrate such conformance to others.
Seek certification/registration of its OH&S management system.
Make a self-determination and declaration of conformance with OHSAS 18001.
