District Governor’s Message Continued on Page 2

Well, the first District meeting is under my belt, so I have a brief chance to

breathe. They say that you hit the ground running and they are not kid-

ding. In fact, I think I would say that it is more of a sprint. At the Interna-

tional Convention in Fukuoka, Japan, a new strategic plan called “LCI For-

ward” was previewed and will be fully unveiled in Chicago in 2017. I

thought I would give you a sneak peak of what it entails.

LCI Forward was developed “to respond to growing needs, our primary

goal is to improve the lives of at least 200 million people by year 2020-21

through humanitarian service – tripling our impact”. Goals supporting this

initiative, with additional comments provided, include:

Develop an updated service focus to launch June 2017. Growth of membership remains to be a priority as it allows more hands to provide more service. Currently there are about 40 different services, but each do not have the same degree of resources. In order that we don’t dilute our ser-vices, we need to increase the degree of resources for the less developed areas and/or cull the list to narrow the field Become the best known brand for voluntary services across the world. We need to do a better job at marketing who we are. Clubs need to tell a story about what the Lions do. It is not just about the number of mem-bers that we have when we give them our “elevator speech”, it is also about the service we provide. In addition, the use of various technology platforms need to be explored. Achieve best in-class services to maintain clubs, districts and the as-sociation. This can be accomplished through use of quality improvement pro-

grams. Develop new and innovative ways to engage people in humanitarian service. There is a problem with retention with losing 200,000 members per year. Surveys revealed that those who left Lions did not feel that they received any benefits to continue being a member. Enhance the value of being a Lion by continually expanding member benefits, leadership training and member services. To provide a visual of these supporting goals, a strategy “wheel” was presented. It consisted of 4 sec-

tions with 4 arrows surrounding the parameter to conceptualize that all the 4 areas work together with

none being more important than the other. Additionally, the arrows symbolize that the process is contin-

ual. The four areas include “Improve membership value and reach new markets”; “Enhance service im-

pact and focus”; “Reshape public opinion and improve visibility” and “Pursue Club, District and Organ-

izational excellence”.

In order to provide a foundation for these initial steps, 4 overreaching focal areas, displayed as a set of 4

outer arrows in the conceptual model above, were presented. These included:

1. Updated Global Cause – Vision will remain an area of importance, although there were hints that of some type of transformation of vision not being the main emphasis, but to also con-sider the other 3 Global service initiatives. An example of an updated environmental cause was to join together to tackle Global warming.

2. Global Marketing Plan – There needs to be a consideration how can we put the word out. We need to mine technology and social media so that we are not “the best kept secret”.

3. Total Quality Program – Processes need to be improved. 4. New Innovative Products –We need to look ahead at where we will be in the future.

In this process, various subgroups of Board members have developed action plans, which are being

gathered and collated. As this point, the LCI Forward Strategy is still a work in progress. So there you

have it. As IPDG Aron would say, “Very interesting stuff”. I can’t wait for the final roll out of this strate-

gic plan. We need to evolve to survive.

Transitional Cabinet Meet-

ing—July 23—24, 2016 held

in Willows, CA.

Here are few pictures of

some the fun things at the

Cabinet Meeting.

The meeting was well at-

tended even though it was

extremely hot!!!

The food prepared by the

Willows Lions Club was ex-

cellent and was enjoyed by

all.

The raffle went well and

raised some well-needed

funds.

I don’t know why this new

cabinet member was so hap-

py but apparently he was

having a good time!

I know the Tail Twister was

busy on both days. She is

very good at her job AND

the Lions didn’t seem to

mind paying all those fines.

I don’t know if 1st VDG Ma-

rianne was trying to pull the

new 2nd VDG Sue Kerr into

the fold or trying to shake

hands???

The speakers were all great!

Here’s to a successful year!

Greetings from the Oregon Coast

Windy windy windy…. but sunny and cool. I am loving the temps up here.

Wasn’t that a great Transitional meeting we had in Willows? Interesting speakers, hands-on projects

and great food made us happy to be 4-C1 Lions! Governor Jamie is certainly setting the bar high for

the next District Governor.

The Lion’s Centennial Celebration Year is in full swing and the district meeting was a good example

of how clubs can zero in on the four areas of focus, Sight, Youth, Environment and Hunger. I plan to

carry these themes forward next year so I am glad you will all be familiar with them. There are so

many ways that clubs can get involved in these areas, and probably already are. Please be sure to post

your Centennial Projects on the LCI website so we can get an accurate figure of how many are being

served by Lions in District 4-C1. At your next business meeting put your heads together and see how

many projects you can think of that fall in these four categories, then pick one or two and run with it.

They can be small projects, such as putting a box at the Post Office for canned goods and collecting

them. Picking up trash on the highway, or the riverside, lakeside or city park. Sponsor a free Swim

Day at your local public pool. Do a White Cane Day event outside the local market (yes you can do

this any time of the year).

There are many, many more ideas, Lions. I know you can come up with some. Do you notice what

all these activities have in common? They make you more visible to your communities. Your neigh-

bors will see what Lions do. Then they think…maybe I could be a Lion. Who could use a few more

energetic people in their clubs?

I hope to hear some of your ideas at the next District meeting in Burney. And I hope to have stories

and pictures about all the Oregon fish I am going to catch this month!

BLUE SKIES AND TAILWINDS

2ND VDG SUE KERR

WOW!! What a great District Meeting the Willows Lions hosted for our DG Jamie Hart. DG Jamie

packed Saturday full of inspiring speakers. The presentation that affected me the most was given by Li-

on Bob Stewart, 4-C6 VDG and his wife Lion Becky. Their talk revolved around dealing with sight im-

paired children. Both of their daughters were born with a condition (hereditary) that caused them to be-

come blind at a very early age. Their story of the fight to first, find out what the condition was that was

affecting their daughters and second, the fight to get them the services they would need to live in the

sighted world as productive citizens was very inspiring. They were actively working to help their daugh-

ters help themselves.

Gloves were handed out by VDG Bob to the Governor’s team at Sunday’s meeting. A reminder that ser-

vice should be a “hands on” experience, our communities need to see that we work hard to make things

better in whatever way we, as Lions, can.

As 2nd Vice District Governor I am on a new flight path of service. Going new places is always exciting,

but there is a lot to do to get to the destination, a lot of information gathered on the ground before taking

off on a new adventure. Sometimes there will be a headwind to slow my progress, other times a tailwind

to speed me along. I look forward to this flight over the next 3 years as a way to be of service to you and,

more importantly, a way for me to become a better Lion. I am relying on those of you with more years

and more service to teach me how to navigate a straight course that will help us, as a District, reach our

intended goals.

Happy Landings!

6 District 4-C1 Information

Greetings from Modoc…” Where the West Still Lives.”

Well, I have been told many times by PDG’s in our District that the many emails, phone calls, and so forth will

come to a screeching halt as of July 1. Maybe it is just me, but so far I am finding that this is not true at all. I

still have a full email box for my email, and my phone is still ringing. I am happy that this is the truth of the

situation, since I care very much about our District and about the different things that are going on, as well as

all of you.

I am, of course, involved in getting our brand new District 4-C1 District Preparedness Committee up and run-

ning, and we are hard after that goal. We are currently getting ready to apply for a LCIF Disaster Preparedness

Grant to help fund the purchase of a new District Disaster Preparedness trailer and the materials to supply it so

that we are prepared for any disaster that strikes our District. This is a truly exciting development for our Dis-

trict, and will be a great benefit going into the future.

Our new Disaster Preparedness/Project Alert Committee will be prepared to handle any of the various disasters

that could affect our District, and will be coordinating with the other agencies, like Red Cross and Salvation

Army that respond in the event of a disaster in our great District. I am really excited about this.

I also am now working as the District 4-C1 Global Membership Team representative, taking over the third year

for PDG Coy Moody, who I am sure you know is still having severe health issues. (I also ask that you keep PDG

Coy and Lion Marilyn Moody in your thoughts and prayers, as this health issue has gone on for far too long and

they really need our help.)

As the District GMT, I will be making myself available to come to your clubs to help where there are issues

that need an outside mediator. I also will be continuing to work on getting new clubs up and running. The

truly good news for our District is that we are very close to chartering a new club up in Trinity Lake, and are

also working on forming a branch club in Weed, where we have several people interested in being a part of this

new club. PDG Steve and PDG Maggie are currently working in Mount Shasta at getting a new club chartered

there, and already have a few new members who are excited about getting a Lions Club going there again, and

this is an offshoot of their recent efforts in the Dunsmuir area.

We finished this last year with positive growth in our District, and for this I am very grateful to all of you! I

tried to make my message this last year be one of inclusion, making our members know that they are part of a

greater family, that they are welcome and that we want to hear their suggestions. Everyone joins Lions for a

reason, and I think that most join because they want to help in our efforts to benefit our communities. Let’s

continue this year by bringing in new members and tapping their ideas about what we can do to help make our

communities better places to live. Continuing with this approach will insure that our clubs are healthy and vi-

brant.

Leading Lions—Situations

You may have noticed that I use these articles for more than history and praise. This will be one of those times.

In every club there are going to be situations that arise. The success of your club will be determined by how the

club and its officers deal with those situations. It may be a power struggle, a personality conflict, a misunder-

standing, a lack of motivation due to amorphous or lacking goals, too much being tasked on to a small number

of members, reticence to change and as many other causes as there are personalities involved. It can even be

how effectively you are recognizing the greatness of your members.

Most clubs function admirably well and some exceptionally. I hope your club’s situation is positive with a rea-

sonable group of fundraising and service projects that are good for your community. That is the stated purpose

of most clubs. If not, I hope that you are taking steps to get back to balance. As a leader, this could be spend-

ing some personal time with those members you feel could be the cause. They will usually tell you of their con-

cerns if you go about asking in an open and caring manner. Just as importantly, you should be paying attention

to the members who are being affected. A simple phone call may be enough. You want to find out what is hap-

pening and why. You spend a substantial amount of time with these fine volunteers and they should be open to

talk with you. If not, you definitely have a concern. It may even be time to get some help.

If the concern is across the club or even potentially between clubs, you should be voicing the concern at a

Board Meeting. If you can get the situation defined and out in the open it will go a long way toward helping

you and your club find a solution. Lack of communication and lots of misunderstanding have brought down

many clubs from where they could be. Some have not survived.

The Global Leadership Team is here to help. Working as part of the District Governor’s Cabinet I am tasked

with helping you through the unusual situations that can arise. I do not have the demanding schedule of the

District Governor and can dedicate meaningful time to your club’s concerns. You may just need the ear of

someone who is not emotionally involved. If you and your club need more, please ask. My email and phone

number are below and I am available from 6 AM to 9 PM every day.

You have just installed new Club Leadership. It is normal for things to come up during this change. Let’s

make it a rewarding and fruitful Lions year.

First Place—Oroville Ophir

Lions Club—155 pounds of

pull tabs.

Chairman Norma stated “For a grand total of 564 pounds—we made my goal of 400 pounds. I

would like to thank all who helped this year with this project. Now then for District Governor

Jamie—Let’s do 600 pounds for our District 4-C1.”

I do believe a challenge was issued by Lion Norma!!! Do you think we can work hard and

achieve this goal of 600 pounds? Are we up to Lion Norma’s challenge?

The Lakehead Lions Club lost a long time member, Shirley Suttles (on the right with her

twin sister Sharon Moore, also a Lion member) on June 18, 2016 at the age of 79. Shirley

was a Lion for over seventeen years. During that time she served many offices including

President, Secretary, Director, and Zone Chairperson. Shirley had been selected “Lion

of the Year.” She was a long time member of the Lakehead Community and was loved

by all. During the 2016 Annual Lakehead Bunny Festival Shirley and her sister Sharon

were selected “Citizens of the Year.” She will be dearly missed by many.

District 4-C1 Information & Club News On July 18, 2016, four members of my club, the Loma Rica Foothill Lions Club, went on a journey

to visit the LPCCI facility in Santa Rosa, CA. We were given a guided tour of the facility, intro-

duced to several of the staff members, and visited with “the puppies”.

The trip was made to present the LPCCI facility with a check in the amount of $3500 to help with

the project. These funds were proceeds from fundraisers, donations from the 4-H, and the collec-

tion cans in our club and in businesses in our community.

Lion Cindi Fitzgerald has been named a Director in our area for LPCCI. We are very proud of her

accomplishments as she is really a “dog person”, raising Border Collies with her husband, Lion

Mike Fitzgerald and participating in many shows and field trials. Lion Cindi, as a trustee for Dis-

trict 4-C1, has presented programs to many of the clubs in our area sharing her knowledge and ex-

pertise in LPCCI functions.

Angie, a staff representative at the Santa Rosa Facili-

trained to recognize sign language to assist his own-

talented dog and is only 2 years old. Both Wallis and

Mork are in training together at the facility. It was

truly amazing to see how this young lady and her dog

were getting to know each other and bonding. Wallis

demonstrated how, by using sign language, she was

able to have Mork bark loudly several times for help.

Truly amazing! Submitted by Lion Sally Carter
