Good evening everyone and wel-come to Cuthbury for tonight'sSouthern League Division One

South & West game with Taunton Town.We wish Taunton's players, supporters &officials a pleasant stay and a safe journeyhome after the game. Please make themfeel at home.Taunton are currently 7th in the table buthave games in hand on the teams abovethem. They have the best away record inthe division, having won seven, drawnone and lost just one of their nine gameson the road. So it's another tough test forthe Magpies.Saturday's strong wind spoilt the gamewith Tiverton although of course it's thesame for both teams and we didn't doenough to justify a point, particularly inthe second half when the wind was behindus. I'm sure Browner will be hoping for abetter start tonight - going three down af-ter 14 minutes gave us far too much to doagainst a team of Tiverton's quality. There were some great results from ourLadies and Youth teams at the weekend. The Under-18s, who are coached by ex-Magpie Martin Clarke, beat Portland 8-2with Will Prior, Charlie Bonnington &Elliott Miller (son of our former Chair-man) all scoring twice. And the Under-14s beat Corfe Mullen 14-0 in the DorsetCounty Cup 3rd Round, James Mitchell,James Third and Basti all grabbing hat-tricks.

Our excellent Under-15s progressed to thesemi-final of the Hampshire Saturday Cupwith a 2-0 win at Ash United. Finally, theLadies team, managed by Mark Joyce, had a thumping 18-0 win over Gillinghamdespite losing keeper Erin Leonard to aninjury sustained in the warm-up.I'm sure all our teams would appreciateyour support, so if you're at a loose endwhen they're playing why not come alongand cheer them on? Details of matchescan be found on the various leagues' web-sites.This Thursday we have another ofMichele Govier's fun-packed Quiz Nightsat the Club. Please try and come along ifyou can and help the Club. And youmight win a cash prize! Entry is £6 perperson and that includes a delicious curry. Thanks to Michele for organising it. Kick-off is 7.30.Finally, the latest monthly draw of theMagpie 100 Club will take place on Satur-day at half-time in the Burnham game. Ifyou're not already a member of the 100Club, see Steve Harvey or any directortonight. It costs just £5 per number permonth.Enjoy the game.

From the DugoutFirstly, I’d like to thank all of the

Wimborne Town FC faithful thatgave me a warm welcome on my

first home game in charge last weekend, and now that I’ve got the first few gamesunder my belt, I’m beginning to get a feelfor what the current squad of players canbring to the club, and who ultimately aregoing to be a part of Wimborne Town FCgoing forward.

These games have been a fairly brutal in-troduction to Southern League footballand none more so than last Saturday athome to Tiverton. I turned up to theground full of expectation that we weregoing to get the first positive result of mytenure here at the Cuthbury.14 minutes and 39 seconds in to the game,I was quickly having to revise that expec-tation!If I could ignore this and look at the re-maining 75 minutes and 21 seconds of thematch, then scoring 2 goals unopposed inthose awful conditions against a top 5 sidewould be something positive to take awayfrom the game. However, the bare factsare that we defended poorly and gave our-selves a mountain to climb that in the endwas too much. The Tiverton 2nd goal wasa fantastic strike, wind assisted or not, butthe other two goals were pretty dire piecesof defending, and we need to be better,

much better. It would be easy to blame theconditions and possibly point fingers atthe referee, who had clearly got the wrongimpression about how cards are supposedto be handed out at this time of year. Thatthough would only be masking the factthat we need to better at both ends of thepitch.

Tonight’s opponents Taunton are on agood run of form at present, having endedWinchester City’s unbeaten run recently,so there’s going to be no respite from thehard work needed to get us a result andget us way from the lower reaches of thetable.Along with the players I will be workinghard to improve things on the pitch andget some of those all important points onboard, so please keep going with yoursupport and get behind the lads.

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to this evening’sEvo-Stik League game againstTaunton. We wish the visiting

players, officials and supporters a safejourney home after the game. This is the second of 3 home games in 8days. Tuesday night games under theCuthbury floodlights are always specialoccasions, and have their own atmosphere.I think our visitors will play in all yellow, just as Saturday’s opponents, Tiverton, did. Let’s hope the result is different.Last Saturday was another game played inawful conditions. I don’t think the windhad been given a name by the Met Office, but I gave it one! The incredibly strongwind, blowing straight down the pitch to-wards the Hospital end, made it a game oftwo halves. It was a tough one for Shaneto make his home debut, and, althoughRyan Murray was here pre-season a cou-ple of seasons ago, I think this was hishome competitive debut. We were kicking against the wind in thefirst half, and for the first 10 minutes wewere playing well and on top. We weretrying to play the right way. Then theyscored 3 in about 5 minutes. Just beforetheir first, Shane make a terrific save one-on-one with their centre-forward who triedto lob him. From the resulting in-swingingcorner their man managed to turn andpoke the ball in.Their second was a terrific strike fromtheir skipper from about 30 yards out onthe left. He hit it well, and the wind gotbehind it and the ball absolutely flew in.There was nothing any keeper could havedone to keep that one out. From the kick-off we lost the ball, andnearly another goal, but their effort went

just wide. Shane got good distance on hisgoal kick, but the ball stalled, and thewind threw it back into our penalty area.We had the opportunity to clear, but amix-up between Shane and Oli left theirlad with an open goal. So we were 3down, and only 14 minutes on the clock. We managed to steady the ship, and Jamiescored 3 minutes later. They tried to capi-talise on the wind, and we fought hardagainst it, which made for a competitivegame. And then the ref started dishing outcards, and it became more niggly andfeisty. Tivvy talked the game, and at timesI thought they over-reacted, but that’s partof football and you have to deal with it.With the wind behind us in the second halfFranklyn scored a great second after goodwork by Blakey. At that point I thoughtwe could get something from the game. When they weren’t wasting time, Tivvywere dangerous on the break, and Shanemade 3 terrific saves in one attack to keepthem out. In another attack, one of theirlads hit a shot from outside the box, and itseemed to be going over the bar, then thewind picked it up and it went for a throw-in - amazing. The wind just got strongerand made it difficult to play through balls. But we didn’t test their keeper as much asthey’d fired shots at Shane.Blakey and Stokes had good games inmidfield, they were both strong. A posi-tive was that we came back from 3 downagainst a play-off side to nearly snatch apoint. Taunton are doing well, so tonightwill be another tough challenge. But thelads are up for it, and, with your support,we’ll be doing our best to get a result.Enjoy the game. Scott Arnold

Wimborne Town 2 Tiverton Town 3 - 12 Dec 2015 - Ken Fergus reports

In a match played in gale force winds thatmade the outcome something of a lottery, the Magpies never managed to recoverfrom losing three goals inside the first 14minutes.With Jason Harvell still unfit, Shane Mur-phy continued in goal. Having lost the tossand facing the strong wind in the first half,Wimborne made a dreadful start and werethree down inside the first quarter of anhour. On 8 minutes, a Tiverton cornerfrom the right reached an unmarked LeviLandricombe who turned the ball pastShane Murphy. Four minutes later Tiver-ton hit the post and right after that a fantas-tic wind-assisted strike from Tivertonskipper James Richards gave Shane nochance high up to his right. Two goalsdown after only 13 minutes and things im-mediately got worse when Owen Howetook advantage of a mix-up between IanOliver & Shane Murphy to put the visitorsthree to the good.Jamie Davidson pulled one back on 17minutes when he netted from eight yardsout but the half belonged to Tiverton asthey tried to make the wind advantagecount. On 26 minutes Shane made a goodsave and from the resultant throw-in theball bobbled around the Wimborne area forwhat seemed an age until it was cleared. Two free-kicks to the visitors - both justoutside the box - spelt trouble for the Mag-pies but both were cleared, the first by thewall and the second by Shane's left handpost. Half-time couldn't come soonenough for Wimborne but they held outand could have scored again right on thereferee's whistle when a Tiverton defendercleared the ball from very close in.

With the strengthening wind behind themand kicking towards their favourite Hospi-tal end, Wimborne were definitely in witha good chance of taking something fromthe game and when Franklyn Clarke pulledanother back on 56 minutes after goodwork by Jon Blake, it looked more thanlikely. Ant Waters replaced Ryan Murrayon 65 minutes as the Magpies pressed forthe equaliser and Franklyn came close tohis second on 73 minutes with a cross thatthe wind almost took into the Tiverton net.Tiverton still looked dangerous, however, and Shane Murphy had to be on his toes tomake a couple of good saves. A Wim-borne corner was parried by Tivertonkeeper Perry on 84 minutes and when theball reached Jamie Davidson, he fired in ashot that Perry did well to save down lowat his left post. Morgan Turner replacedDeclan Randall on 87 minutes but whenthe ref blew for time it was Tiverton whowere celebrating. In truth, Wimborne didn't test the keeperenough in the second half when they hadthe wind behind them and he had too com-fortable an afternoon. There were (I think!) 11 yellow cardshanded out in the game and Jamie David-son was given a straight red seconds fromtime for retaliating after being fouled.Whether the referee took the conditionssufficiently into consideration is one forthe assessor to judge but no-one left theground thinking this was a dirty game.Wimborne Town: Murphy, Randall (Turn-er 87), Maybury, Arnold (capt), Oliver,Blake, Davidson, Murray (Waters 65),Stokoe, Clarke, Preston. Unused subs:Kellaway, Bayston, Johnson

History of Taunton Town F.C.

The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by a few localbusinessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter 1948. They then playedon a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish OldBoys and finished up at Denman’s Park, Haines Hill.Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home, on a lease agreement with the Taunton Borough Council. The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active Supporters Clubduring the late 50s and early 60s. 1968/69 saw an upsurge in the club’s fortunes withmanager Doug Hillard securing the Western League championship for the first time.During the middle 1970s Ron Gingell became manager and the club were runners up forfour consecutive seasons. The 70s was also highlighted by the club purchasing theground from Taunton Borough Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977the club gained election to the Southern League Division One (South) and two years lat-er the reorganisation of the leagues caused by the establishing of the Alliance PremierLeague saw Taunton Town transfer to the Midland Division to take advantage of the M5motorway.The club became a limited company in 1981. The new board soon decided that SouthernLeague football was too expensive and the club reverted to the Western League in 1983.Seven years later the championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive under themanagement of Keith Bowker. In 1994 the team then managed by Terry Rowles battled through to the F A Vase final atWembley Stadium but Diss Town won the trophy in extra time.Russell Musker was appointed manager in November 1994 and another championshipfollowed in 1996. After two seasons as runners up three consecutive titles followed to-gether with the club’s first ever Cup success – a 2 – 1 victory over Berkhamsted Town inthe F A Carlsberg Vase final at Aston Villa’s newly modernised Villa Park stadium. Thisended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950s. Another Cup victory wasachieved in 2003, lifting the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win overYeovil Town in a final played at Clevedon Town’s Hand Stadium.Peter Beadle took over as Manager in 2005 amid great optimism but left after only 14games to join Newport County and former Hallen manager Gary Domone stepped intothe hot seat – after a disappointing start results began to improve and the club won itssecond Somerset Premier Cup by beating a strong Mangotsfield United side at Westonsuper Mare. Domone resigned as Manager in December 2007 and was replaced by IanJones, who himself resigned in April 2009.Former player Paul West, who lifted the F A Vase in 2001, took over and rebuilt theteam with a local emphasis. West left the club in May 2012 and was replaced by LeighRobinson. In the previous season the club finished with a run of nine consecutive victo-

ries culminating with the club’s third Somerset Premier Cup triumph, beating FromeTown 1-0 in the final played at Paulton Rovers FC. This was especially notable as nogoals were conceded in five games. The club also won the Southern League Grounds-man of the Year award in 2013-2014, a remarkable achievement considering the floodswhich affected the area causing the ground to be under water in January and February.Last season saw the club finish fourth, the best ever finish in the Southern League, andthis qualified us for the play offs but we lost 2-1 at Stratford Town, who went on toachieve promotion. In fact 2014-2015 was one of the most successful seasons in recenthistory with the retention of the Somerset Premier Cup, beating Yeovil Town in the fi-nal. We also retained the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award and were inface voted the second best club at Step 3 & 4. Our programme also won a prestigiousaward being voted the best in the Southern League and 18th nationally.Off the field the club suffered a major blow in July 2011 when the clubhouse was badlydamaged by a fire which was caused by an electrical fault – what remained of the club-house was extensively smoke damaged and the whole building had to be demolished. Amobile bar was brought in on matchdays but the following year a modular building wasopened despite the original builder going into administration.

During thedecline of the coal industry, in the 1950s and 1960s, Cinderford suffered as most of themale population was employed in coal-mining. Today, Cinderford is home to a widevariety of light and heavy industry.

IT never rains but it pours. The old sayingmay well have crossed Alex Browne’smind as he stood in his technical area onSaturday. As the Wimborne Town manag-er was getting soaked by a relentless Dor-set downpour, his team sank further intothe relegation mire.Having watched his men dominate for longperiods, Browne looked on as Wimbornewere undone by an efficient TauntonTown, who made the most of the chancesthat came their way during an absorbingtussle. The visitors’ ruthlessness in front ofgoal is something Wimborne will need tomirror – and fast – if they are to escape thelower reaches of the Southern League Di-vision One South and West. His side are languishing in 17th after justone league win in their past eight outings, but Browne remains positive. “I thought itshowed how cruel football can be, espe-cially when you are down there,” he said, reflecting on this harsh defeat. “Every oneof my lads was top drawer.” Browne feltMagpies dominated the game.On chances created and possession en-joyed, the hosts could, and should, haveenhanced their points tally. But Wimbornewill at least seek solace in the fact they areunlikely to come up against a goalkeeperin such inspired form every week. That Taunton’s Chris Astley was the visi-tors’ stand-out player spoke volumes forthe way in which this contest played out.Taunton started the brighter and it took abrave goal-line clearance from Wimbornecentre-half Darren Curtis to prevent RossMacNab from capitalising on a mix-up.And for all their nice football, Wimbornewere then indebted to goalkeeper AlanWalker-Harris for keeping the scores levelafter 34 minutes. Taunton’s Alexis Piperfound himself clean through after beating

Curtis but saw his fierce shot brilliantlykept out by the keeper’s left hand.On 45 minutes, Astley produced the firstpart of his show-stopping act when hemade an outstanding reaction stop to keepout a close-range volley from Matt Groves, who had been picked out by Mark Smith. And the importance of that moment wasunderlined when Taunton stunned Wim-borne by opening the scoring on the strokeof half-time. Jon Vance was the man ontarget. Having been found by a quick free-kick, the midfielder unleashed a dippingdrive from 25 yards which left WalkerHarris motionless as it went over his head. With influential skipper Paul Roast, Smithand Liam Green all catching the eye inmidfield, Magpies set about finding a routeback into the game after the interval. While their cause was not helped by thetorrential rain, they did carve out chances. But having again seen plenty of the ball,Browne’s men were on the receiving endof a painful counter-punch that sealed thepoints on 73 minutes. After a fine flowingmove, Piper showed wonderful touch andcomposure to fire past Walker-Harris from15 yards.Wimborne’s response was commendable, but they found Astley too good. The keeper showed solid handling to clingon to a Smith free-kick before blocking theformer Christchurch midfielder’s lowdrive.Completing a hat-trick of excellent latesaves, he dived low to brilliantly paw awayanother Smith shot as Wimborne came upshort.Magpies: Walker-Harris, Wilson, Haysom,Roast, Curtis, Lloyd, Green, Stokoe,Chudy (Barnes, 70), Groves, Smith. Un-used subs: Lockyer, Powell, Yelland, Ma-lara (g/k).

“Who ate all the pies? Not Vegans United” - The Times Sat Nov 7th 2015

“In 2010 Forest Green Rovers were facingoblivion. They were 20th in their league, verging on bankruptcy, and could not shiftmany pies and Bovrils. Then along camethe football club’s saviour: a new age trav-eller with a hemp bag of quorn nuggets.Dale Vince bought the club, threw out thepies, introduced soya milk, laid an organicpitch, and then signed a solar-powered ro-bot to mow it.The club, based in Nailsworth, Gloucester-shire, is 2nd in the National Conference, and planning a new stadium, completewith a sports science hub. Mr. Vince, whofounded Ecotricity, Britain’s largest greenpower company, in 1995, and whosewealth has been valued at £110 million, made some simple rules when he agreed tosave the club from bankruptcy. He insisted on an environmentally friendlyethos, including a meat-free regime. So outwent the hot dogs and burgers; in camequorn nuggets, vegetarian fajitas, pan-zanella salads, vegan beers and meat-free

pie and mash. Soya milk cools down thehalf-time cuppas. The solar-powered “mo-bot” tends the playing surface, and theplayers’ kit is free of vinyl.Supporters, instilled with the pie’n’Bovrilattitude of clubs across Britain, have beenwon over, according to Richard Joyce, theclub spokesman. He said that it did nottake them long to realise that a well-madeveggie burger could be a lot tastier than ameat pattie made from “lips and bums”. Hesaid: “The burgers they used to sell herecost 4p each to buy in, so you can imaginethe quality of the meat.”At first glance the matchday menu on offeris little different to that at any other foot-ball ground. There is burger and chips orpie and mash at £6.95, nuggets and beansfor £5.50, or soup and salad. It is only inthe small print that the vegan truth is re-vealed. The “Q-pie” is quorn mince, theburgers are bean, and the hot chocolate ismade with soya rather than cow’s milk.”
