Ad un certo punto i vasi, le fioriere, hanno cominciato a crescere, ad

andare fuori scala. Ad assumere colori squillanti ed accesi, finiture

brillanti. Passandoci vicino si ha la piacevole sensazione di ritrovarsi

Pollicino, rivivendo un diverso e infantile rapporto di proporzione con le

cose. Poi si sfiorano questi pachidermi e si scopre che sono caldi al tatto,

sonori come vecchi tronchi cavi, rugosi o lisci come pietre levigate dai

millenni. Lazienda che li ha inventati si chiama Serralunga ed a Biella.

Sembrerebbe un azzeccatissimo marchio inventato da qualche creativo

della comunicazione, ed invece i Serralunga si chiamano proprio cos e

sono imprenditori da cinque generazioni. Dunque, la ditta Serralunga, che,

detto per inciso sta in via Serralunga, nasce nel 1825 ed una conceria.

Poi lavora il cuoio a scopi industriali: cinghie di trasmissione e simili.

Negli anni cinquanta del novecento aggiunge la lavorazione della plastica:

articol i industriali. In seguito lazienda si interessa di processi di

lavorazione pi avanzati, e negli anni ottanta importa dagli Stati Uniti il

sistema di stampaggio della plastica a rotazione. Per prima in Italia

installa nello stabilimento un impianto pilota e comincia a produrre vasi.

Il rotazionale una tecnologia molto innovativa, che consente di produrreoggetti cavi, a serbatoio per intenderci. I primi vasi formalmente

risentono ancora di un atavismo che richiama, anche nel colore, il coccio.

Ma sono leggeri, e quindi si possono fare grandi e si possono mettere sui

terrazzi senza che incombano con il peso. Non che sia poi facile farli

grandi, ma Serralunga capisce che la dimensione straordinaria

premiante. E se oltre ad essere grandi fossero anche belli? E originali?

Comincia allora un serrato rapporto con designers ed architetti

internazionali, ai quali si chiede semplicemente di progettare un bel

vaso grande. Nasce cos una collezione unica di forme ed interpretazioni

At a certain point, flowerpots and troughs started to grow, becoming

oversize. To take on vivid, bright colours and brilliant finishes. Walking

next to them, one has the pleasant feeling of being Tom Thumb, reliving

a new, infantile relationship of propor tion between things. Reaching out

to touch these pachyderms, we discover they are warm, sound like hollow

old trunks, rough or smooth as stones polished over the millennia.

The company that invented them is called Serralunga and is in Biella.

Although it might seem like a lucky brand invented by some creative

advertising executive, it actually takes its name from the Serralunga family,

who have been entrepreneurs for five generations. But lets take things

in order, because the story is an enthralling one. Serralunga, located,

by the way, in Via Serralunga, was founded in 1825 as a tannery.

It later processed leather for industrial purposes: drive belts and the like.

In the 1950s, it extended its business to include plastic processing for

manufacturing industrial items. Later the Company specialised in more

advanced manufacture processes and in the 1980s it imported the

rotating moulding system from the United States. It was the first Italian

company to install a pilot system and start to manufacture pots. Therotating system boasts highly innovative technology, making it possible

to manufacture hollow, tank-shaped articles. The first pots were formally

affected by an avatarism that recalls terracotta, also as regards colour.

However they are light, and have a hollow inner space that improves

compost insulation. This means that they can be made larger

and positioned on terraces without causing weight problems. Not that

making them large is an easy business, but Serralunga recognises that

the oversize dimension is all-important. And what, then, if in addition

to being large they were also good looking? And original? This was the start

catalogo per accorgersi di quanto stranianti siano questi vasi. Perch dai

primi, che proponevano un disegno abbastanza minimale, si arrivati ad

una completa reinvenzione, fino ad ottenere oggetti che vivono da se:

sculture, dove la funzione del contenere un vegetale diviene quasi

accessoria. La tecnologia rotazionale a questo punto ormai una cultura

profondamente assimilata dallAzienda. Si possono tentare altre strade, le

lampade, per esempio, ma anche sedute, tavoli. Un caso speciale quello

delle lampade: grandi, naturalmente. Il materiale opalescente, illuminato

dallinterno, le fa sembrare diafane apparizioni. Le finiture poi, sono una

novit assoluta: cromate e successivamente tornite a traccia. Dalla sottile

fessura esce una tenue luce che contrasta con il metallo della finitura.

Dove si mettono questi straordinari prodotti? Allesterno, naturalmente:

parchi, giardini, cortili, piazze. Ma anche in interni, nelle situazioni dove

occorra un segno forte, un punto dove focalizzare la percezione di un

ambiente. Infatti li ritroviamo ormai ovunque nel mondo: negli aeroporti,

negli alberghi, nelle fiere. Le occasioni non mancano. Passando ogni volta

accanto ad uno di essi non resistiamo alla tentazione di bussare sullasuperficie facendolo risuonare come una cassa armonica.

of a close partnership with international designers and architects,

who were simply asked to design a nice, big plant pot. The result was

a unique collection of forms and interpretations of an object that went

from being ordinary to being extraordinary. Just one glance at the

catalogue will be enough to tell you just how unusual these flowerpots are.

Because from the initial, minimal designs, they have evolved into

a complete reinvention to obtain objects with a life of their own: sculptures,

where the function of holding a plant is almost of secondary importance.

By this time, rotating moulding technology was a culture that had been

profoundly absorbed by the Company. Other roads can be explored,

such as lamps, chairs and tables. Lamps, in particular, are a special case:

and are, of course, oversize. The opalescent material, lit from inside,

makes them look like diaphanous apparitions. The finishings are also

groundbreaking: chrome-plated before being trace turned. A subtle light

emanates from a slender slit that contrasts with the metal of the finish.

Where are these extraordinary products to be placed? Outside,

of course, in parks, gardens, courtyards and public squares. And inside,

in settings requiring a strong signal, to create a focal point for theenvironment. They can be found all over the world: in airports, hotels

and exhibition centres. There is no shortage of opportunities. And each

time, as one passes alongside, one experiences the almost uncontrollable

urge to knock on the surface to make it resound like a harmonic box.

Serralunga mi ha lanc iato una sfida chiedendomi se avessi voluto realizzare qualcosa

che non avevo mai pensato di fare. I vasi che ho proposto sono stati pi che un esercizio di ricerca,

sono stati un esercizio molto fortunato. Sono funzionali? Non lo sono? Sono delle sculture?

Ero interessato a fare queste cose e non a preoccuparmi a cosa sarebbero servite.

Serralunga gave me a challenge

and asked if I could have done something

I might never have thought to do.

The vases I proposed have been more than

a research exercise, they have been

a very successful exercise.

Are they functional? Are they not?

Are they sculptures? I was interested

in doing these things and not caring

what they are going to be.

Luisa Bocchietto ha ideato con Marco Serralunga la collezione Serralunga design ed stata Art Director dellazienda

dal 2000, anno di creazione della collezione fino al 2007. Per questo lavoro di direzione artistica ha ricevuto la segnalazione

ADI Index nel 2004. I suoi prodotti sono caratterizzati dalla grande dimensione e dalla ricerca dellessenzialit e coerenza

della forma. Alcuni di questi si sono tradotti in famiglie (Vas-One e Kabin) declinate in pi dimensioni. Lapproccioal progetto quello di individuare elementi di novit nella riproposizione di forme archetipiche che sappiano

valorizzare al meglio la tecnologia produttiva. La volont quella di realizzare prodotti industrializzati, di grande

diffusione, introducendo sempre un elemento di sorpresa, che generi emozione.

Luisa Bocchietto created the Serralunga design collection

with Marco Serralunga and she has been Art Director of

the company from 2000, the year the collection was created,

until 2007. She received the ADI Index recommendation for this

Art Direction work in 2004. Her products are of large

dimensions and show a search for essentialism and

coherence in shape. Some of these have been translated into

families (Vas-One and Kabin) manufactured in various dimensions.

The design approach is to identify new elements in the

reproposal of archetypal shapes that can make the most of

production technology.The aim is to create industrialised

products, of widespread distribution, always introducing

an element of surprise, which generates emotion.

In the very beginning we established a relationship with clients

of delivering solutions that reinvented the program, of having our own

ideas and interpretations that werent tied to the form of an institution.

Now our designs can be described as intuitive, radical, international,

and dynamic. We strive to maintain these original, independent working

processes with radical innovation. Product design inspires c reativity

and is good to undertake between larger architectural projects.

We like such projects because they are experimental and quick to execute.They keep us within this avant-garde cultural sphere; help us maintain

a relationship with the art world. Pursuing the arousal of curiosity

is a constant theme in the work we produce. Our designs for products

and furniture are also excellent opportunities to develop and explore

the new possibilities created by signifi cant technological advancements

in three dimensional design software, as well as our inherent desire

to test and engage with the very latest manufacturing capabilities, resulting

in a dialogue of curvilinear geometries and detailed ergonomic research

that provides the opportunity for us to reinvent the balance between furniture

and space. With almost two centuries of tradition in revolutionary design

and container production, our collaboration with Serralunga is a continuation

of our work pushing the boundaries of design and architecture.

In un primo momento abbiamo stabilito con il cliente un rapporto in cui le proposte iniziali re-inventavano il

programma, in cui le nostre idee ed interpretazioni non erano legate alla forma istituzionale. Ora i nostri

progetti possono essere descritti come intuitivi, radicali, internazionali e dinamici. Noi lottiamo per mantenere

questi processi lavorativi originali ed indipendenti attraverso uninnovazione radicale. Il progetto di un

prodotto ispira creativit ed bene portalo avanti insieme ai maggiori progetti architettonici. Noi amiamo questi

progetti perch sono sperimentali e veloci da fare. Ci tengono al passo con la sfera culturale davanguardia;

ci aiutano a mantenere una relazione con il mondo ar tistico. Stimolare il risveglio della curiosit un

tema costante nel lavoro che svolgiamo. I nostri progetti di prodotti ed arredi rappresentano anche unottima

opportunit per sviluppare ed esplorare nuove possibilit fornite dagli sviluppi tecnologici nel campo dei

Personally Ive been motivated to collaborate with Serralunga

by the fact that it is a company with a real technological

know-how.This gives the designer the possibility to directly work

with a good source of technical information thus allowing

the development of interesting projects.

Serralunga is one of the most innovative emerging

brands of Italy. Their commitment to new

technologies and typologies is giving designers like

myself a new creative freedom especially in the

convergence of form and aesthetics. My personal

aim with Marco Serralunga is to understand how

Vico Magistretti ha iniziato a collaborare con Serralunga incuriosito dalla nuova tecnologia rotazionale,

che ancora non conosceva, e in seguito alla propria sensibilit riguardante il tema dellabitare gli spazi aperti.

I nomi delle sue ultime creazioni - la poltroncina Russele il vaso Kew - si riferiscono alla cultura dei giardini

inglesi. Si tratta di progetti dallimmagine sobria anche se portano alle estreme conseguenze alcuni aspetti

costruttivi e tipologici. La poltroncina Russel, dalle dimensioni comode e dalle forme stondate, realizzata

con un unico stampo ed costituita da resistenti sezioni cave che sfruttano le caratteristiche della tecnologia

rotazionale. Il vaso Kew uninvenzione tipologica. composto da due elementi indipendenti: un anello

ed un vaso a forma di semisfera. Essi si trovano in perfetto equilibrio quando luno sorregge laltro ed quindi

Vico Magistretti started to collaborate with Serralunga because

he was intrigued by the new rotational moulding technology which

he didnt know before, and was motivated by his sensibility for outdoor

living spaces. The names of his latest creations the little armchair

Russel and the pot Kew refer to English garden culture.

They are pure and simple objects even if they take some constructive

and typological aspects to the extreme. The little armchair Russel,

with comfortable dimensions and rounded shapes, is made

by one mould and is set up by resistance hollow sections using the

rotational moulding features. The pot Kew is a typological

invention.Its made by two independent elements: a ring a nd a

semi-spherical pot. They are in perfect balance when one holds the

other and its possible to choose the inclination of the vase.

Una ditta che partendo dalla formazione del cuoio si era col tempo evoluta nello stampaggio delle

Ho deciso di proporre a Serralunga, ampiamente riconosciuta per le caratteristiche dei sui prodotti,

un progetto basato sulla lavorazione delle superfici, elaborando la pelle esterna di forme

sostanzialmente semplici. Esaminato il parco delle possibili aziende, ho pensato (senza sbagliarmi)

che Serralunga potesse essere la pi pronta a gettarsi a capofitto in unimpresa sperimentale,

che nel caso specifico parte dalla costruzione di un apposito macchinario per fresare la superficie

del prodotto gi stampato. Sono convinto che Marco Serralunga sia linterlocutore giusto per poter fare

della sperimentazione, grazie ad un giusto mix di lungimiranza, spirito ludico e attenzione al mercato.

I decided to propose to Serralunga,

well known for the contents of

its products, the design of a lamp

based on the processing of the surface

thus creating a very special skin.

Looking for a possible company,

I thought (with no mistake)

that Serralunga could be the one

ready to work on this experimental

project, building a special machine

suitable for milling the product.

Pensare per la prima volta al vaso come prodotto di design e al rotomoulding stata veramente

unesperienza interessante. La velocit poi della Serralunga di comprendere le potenzialitdi questa tecnologia per il design ha fatto il resto. Investire su un vaso come il Santavasemi ha

dato la cifra creativa di questa azienda, per questo mi interessa.

Marco Serralunga decided to work with meand other designers on the first collection.

To think about the pot as a design product

and about the rotomoulding has been a really

interesting experience. Then the speed of which

opportunities of this technology made the rest.
