Take a course with UK-TEFL and you will be guaranteed training of the very highest quality. Every year more than 3,000 people choose

to study with us and transform their lives in the process. Here are just some of the reasons why you should do the same:

UK-TEFL courses are endorsed by TQUK – a national awarding

body which is regulated by Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and

Examinations Regulation). By matching up to TQUK’s rigorous

assessment methods we have demonstrated the excellent standard

of our course provision. We would advise against taking non Ofqual

endorsed courses.

At UK-TEFL we recognise that teacher training can be a costly

investment. That’s why we constantly strive to find ways to save

you money and regularly update our website with special offers.

You can reserve your spot on a course for a small deposit and pay

the remainder in instalments.

We have an extensive network of overseas schools and recruiters who

are always on the lookout for new teachers. Complete one of our TEFL

courses and you will be given access to all of these contacts, as well

as expert guidance on finding work from the

UK-TEFL team.

Our courses have been developed and improved over many

years. As we offer both the Standard (QCF Level 2 equivalent) and

Advanced (QCF Level 3 equivalent) courses, our training is suitable

for all levels. We use only the best and most experienced trainers, all

of whom hold at least a CELTA qualification (or equivalent) and have

taught abroad for a minimum of three years. We are also the only

TEFL provider in the UK to offer Level 3 equivalent classroom training.

Our training will give you the tools needed to be a good teacher, such

as lesson planning, classroom management and how to communicate

effectively. This will add to your continuing professional development

and help you develop transferable skills you can put to good use

throughout your career.

This is the first course you should take if you have never done any English teaching before, and serves as the perfect introduction to the world of TEFL. You will learn all the basics you’ll need to go and teach, such as ice breakers, grammar, vocabulary, lesson planning and teaching practice.

The Standard Course can be taken over 2 or 3 days. The same material is covered on both courses, the main difference is the amount of time you have to complete the work. On the 3-day course you are given an extra day to go over the material, and you have an extra teaching practice. The 2-day courses are always run over the weekend, and the 3-day courses take place from Monday to Wednesday.

2 DayDay One – 9am-8pmDay Two – 9am-6pm

3 DayDay One – 9am-6pmDay Two – 9am-6pmDay Three – 9am-6pm

If you feel that you are ready and raring to teach, find your dream destination and start applying!

Upon completion of the Standard Course you will be given access to the TEFL Connections service, allowing you to contact our vast network of schools and recruiters around the world. Or you can expand your skill set and continue training by taking the Advanced Course (page six) or our 120-hour Online TEFL Course (page eight).

STANDARD COURSE CONTENTGiven that the Standard Course is for those with no prior teaching experience, and that it lasts 2 or 3 days, there is quite a lot to take in. You will be pleased to hear however, that as well as being challenging, the training is also a lot of fun. The activities were specifically designed to be interactive and keep you engaged and entertained. No two courses are exactly the same, as trainers adapt the material to suit the needs of the students at hand. However, there are certain tasks that are always undertaken during your training:

WARMERSEvery course begins with some introductory warmers. This is where you get to meet everybody else on your course, introduce yourselves and take part in some ice breaker activities to help you get to know each other a little better. You can also use these ideas in future EFL classes!

REAL EFL LESSONLearn about how to structure a grammar lesson using the ‘PPP’ (Presentation, Practice, Production) method. PPP is a tried and tested technique for English language teaching that will be invaluable to you once you step into a real classroom.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE LESSONA lot of people wonder how it is possible to teach English to foreign students without knowing how to speak their native tongue. You will see how this is done by learning some key phrases in a new language without the use of English translation. This will help you to understand the value of full immersion in the classroom.

TENSESKnowing about all the tenses in English is vital. You will be given a quick rundown of when and why we use each one.

ASSESSMENTLearn how to gauge students’ language levels and grade their written work. You will also be shown how to give them constructive feedback.

EFL EMPLOYMENTAll of the trainers we use have extensive experience of teaching both abroad and here in the UK. They will give you the benefit of their wisdom by telling you the best places to look for teaching positions and giving you hints and tips on how to land your dream job.

WHAT TO TEACHLearn about using controlled practice, contexts and vocabulary in the classroom, as well as teaching a skills-based lesson.

LESSON PLANNING/TEACHING PRACTICE On each day of the course you will be split into groups and asked to prepare an EFL lesson on a chosen topic. You will then deliver this lesson to your fellow course participants, presenting to the class as if they were real foreign language students. This is the most important aspect of your training, as it gives you the chance to hone your teaching skills. As such, this is the element of the course that takes up the most time. This is also what you will be assessed on, but don’t worry, the teaching practices are short and you have at least one practice before the real one, so you feel more comfortable.

ADVANCED COURSE CONTENTThe Advanced Course was developed exclusively by UK-TEFL to meet the needs of conscientious teachers who want to develop their skills. This course bypasses the basics and goes straight to some of the more complex aspects of EFL teaching. Specifically, you will learn how to cope with different types and levels of learner.

BUSINESS ICE BREAKERSLike the Standard Course, the Advanced Course starts with some warm-up games. The difference here is that they are tasks that are relevant to a business context. You will learn how vital these kinds of activities are in networking and communication for business people.

TELEPHONE TASKSYou will be split into pairs and given some mock telephone conversations to perform. The aim of this task is to show the difference between everyday English and business English.

KEY BUSINESS TOPICSLearn about the core topics that appear on most business English syllabi. These include meetings, presentations, e-mails, business collocations and trends/developments.

YOUNG LEARNERSLooks at the most effective techniques for teaching very small children. Watch an example lesson on how to teach ‘parts of the body’ - a staple of young learner courses around the world.

DISCIPLINEParticipation in a group discussion on the different disciplines and incentives that are appropriate to different types of learners.

ONE-TO-ONELearn about the different tools that are available to use when teaching in one-to-one situations. This can be completely different to instructing a class and this section of the course will give you an understanding of what you need to bear in mind when teaching just one student.

LEXICAL FEATURESDiscover some of the more complex aspects of grammar such as phrasal verbs, collocations and dependent prepositions. Your trainer will also give you some grammar activities that you can use with advanced learners.

LESSON PLANNING/TEACHING PRACTICEYou will be split into groups on both days of the course and asked to prepare and deliver an EFL lesson. The first practice will be aimed at young learners and the second aimed at advanced learners.

PLANNING A LESSONPlanning is an essential part of teaching, so the first part of the course focuses on how to create a successful lesson plan, as well as other key aspects:teaching methodologies, what is included in a lesson plan, how to set out a lesson plan and adapting your lesson for different character types.By the end of the section you will know how to produce a structured lesson plan for a range of different activities.

LESSON CONTENTThis section examines the three main topics you will teach:Vocabulary, grammar and the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). You will refresh your own knowledge on each subject, and learn how to turn this knowledge into great material for your class. Once all sections are complete you will be ready to take the final course assessment.

FINAL ASSESSMENTThe final assessment is made up of three parts: multiple choice test, lesson plan and written assessment.

This will all be submitted to your tutor for marking and you will be given either a pass or fail for your lesson plan, essay and any other supporting documentation. Your tutor will also provide detailed feedback on your work.

Michelle Russell - 2 Day Standard Course, London

Good, interesting and I learnt a lot. The trainer was very good, with good authority and humour. I hope to teach English abroad on a gap year and during summer holidays when I am at university.

Neel Suraj Rokad – 2 Day Standard Course, Birmingham

Really intense, but incredibly rewarding. I didn’t realise it was going to be so interactive and testing, but I appreciated being challenged. Really great trainer, very energetic and engaging.

Jessica Haigh – 2 Day Standard Course, Manchester

The course was very interesting. I felt a lot of information was involved in the two days. I have learnt a lot more than I expected and feel more confident going into job hunting. The trainer is very knowledgeable and very approachable. She made everyone feel comfortable throughout the two days. Soon after taking the course I managed to secure a job in Spain.

Teresa Canny – 2 Day Standard Course, Glasgow

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The trainer’s knowledge brought it to life for me. Lots of food for thought and how to move forward with TEFL. She was brilliant as she kept the days moving and nothing was too much trouble to her. I will perhaps do some summer work in the UK or some voluntary work to get some more teaching experience.

MEET THE TRAINER STEWART HAMILTON-DEANS

Location of Training: London

Stewart spent most of his twenties travelling the world, teaching various ages in destinations such as Burma, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand along with writing TEFL textbooks. After returning to the UK in 2011, he decided to pass on his TEFL skills to others by becoming a UK-TEFL trainer.

Stewart’s background:After majoring in English in my early twenties, the only thing on my mind was to travel the world. Whilst at university, my favourite lecturer would recount tales of her travel and teaching adventures in India and I knew I wanted a similar life experience. After two years of procrastination after graduating, I finally got around to completing my EFL teaching qualification and have never looked back. Where have you taught before? My first job was on the border of Thailand and Burma in 2001, where I taught Burmese orphans beginners level English. Whilst this was a short voluntary position, I enjoyed myself so much that I thought I would continue to seek employment in Asia teaching EFL. At the beginning of 2002 I went to South Korea and taught at the ECC Busan English Academy. After just over a year in that position I moved to Hong Kong in 2003 where I taught at various primary schools, middle schools and adult learning centres until I moved back to London in 2011. During that time I also worked for Pearson Education Asia, writing and editing TEFL textbooks. What advice would you give to people who want to become a TEFL teacher?Teaching English as a foreign language is a rewarding job and a great way to see the world, but remember it is a job. Be prepared to work hard and make sure that you have made a conscientious effort to revise the subject matter that you are going to be teaching. As native English speakers, there will be a certain amount of expectation on new teachers so be sure to prepare yourselves as best you can. If UK-TEFL teacher trainees are unsure of theoretical concepts, then I thoroughly recommend that they complete the online grammar course the company offers as this will give them a good grounding on key concepts they should know and will be teaching. By doing this, new teachers will have more confidence in the classroom and as a result your future students will have more confidence in you too. Final thoughts from Stewart:Let’s leave that to the American author Mark Twain:“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

STUDENT PROFILE TINA LEWINGTON

Tina completed a Standard TEFL Classroom Course with UK-TEFL and has been living in China ever since.

How quickly did you start job searching after completing your TEFL course? About six months after I qualified I came across a job in China on a year’s contract. The job and the benefits sounded too good to be true, but they were true and to this day I’m still in China and still with the same company. I have had my contract extended every year and my career has gone from strength to strength. What age groups have you had the chance to teach? I have taught from kindergarten age children to adults. I started in a training school but I was really unhappy, however as our manager cares about our happiness he moved me. I then started work in a Boarding School where I taught oral English to primary school and middle school students. I then did a voluntary placement where I worked at 9 schools in 4 weeks helping the Chinese English teachers teach English, giving sample lessons, advice, lesson plans etc. After completing that I worked at a Middle School teaching oral English and English grammar to Middle school and High School students. You seem to have taught a wide range of people! What are you doing now? I now teach part time at a kindergarten here in Qingdao as I also have a responsible office job. I’m General Manager of a private language school. I now recruit teachers to work over here in China. I started working in the office to have a change from teaching. I started as Marketing Assistant then Marketing Manager and then I was promoted to General Manager of a private language school. I love teaching and working in China and I really can’t see myself coming back to England yet. Working in a Chinese office has had its challenges as it is completely different to working in an English office. It is one challenge that I am up for though.Would you recommend becoming an EFL teacher in China? It is an experience of a lifetime to work in China and I’m very happy to say mine isn’t ending yet.So if you have any UK-TEFL graduates that would like to work in China, I can promise you, myself and my Chinese colleagues would give them all the support and help I have had since I started.

CASE STUDYHOLLY KIRKHAM DISCUSSES HER EXPERIENCE OF TEACHING IN PERU.

Since I started working for UK-TEFL there is one question that I have been asked over and over again:

“What is it like to move abroad and teach English as a foreign language?”

Amazing! I’ve done it myself and loved it, and I would recommend anyone to do the same.

Many people I speak to would love to teach abroad, but are scared of the big changes involved, such as a completely new career path and the prospects of moving away. I can completely relate to this, as I taught for a few months in Peru, during my compulsory year abroad that was part of my degree. I was pretty scared of what was ahead, especially as I moved out to Lima with only a place to stay organised. However, it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life, and I cannot recommend teaching abroad highly enough.

Less than a month after arriving I had found myself a job teaching in a network of secondary schools spread across Lima – I very quickly had to get used to the ‘combis’, Lima’s main mode of transport: minibuses that are falling apart, with drivers hanging out of the door, shouting the destinations in rapid Spanish whilst speeding down the road. It costs about 10p a ride. But it’s all part of the experience!

I taught giddy 11 year olds and grumpy 16 year olds. By no means was the work easy, but there is nothing more satisfying than teaching a moody teenager something and they get it, and the unique bond you will develop with your pupils is unforgettable. I have so many fond memories of my time spent teaching English in Lima, and even fonder memories of the time I spent travelling at the end of my time in Peru – I got to sand board in a desert oasis, visit the world’s deepest canyon, white water raft, trek through the Amazon jungle and my ultimate dream – visit Machu Picchu.

A TEFL certificate gives you the opportunity to make your dreams become a reality, and I cannot wait to go and discover a new country.

TQUK ACCREDITATIONAs a Platinum Approved Centre, all of our courses are

endorsed by Training Qualifications UK (TQUK). TQUK

are a national awarding body who are regulated by

Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations

Regulation). Their robust quality assurance systems

and procedures ensure that only the very best training

providers receive this recognition.

All of our courses are measured against the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF), with the Standard Course, Online TEFL Course and Online Grammar

Course rated at Level 2 and the Advanced Course at Level 3. The course content on a Level 2 course is roughly equivalent to that taught on a GCSE,

whereas Level 3 is closer to an A-Level.

A TQUK certificate demonstrates to employers that you have taken an endorsed course with appropriate learning outcomes and evaluation methods.

As an external awarding body, the job of TQUK is to

check our course provision to make sure it meets their

rigorous criteria. Having this endorsement is a real mark

of quality, as it shows that an external and independent

body has approved the high quality of our course

development and delivery. Our status as a Platinum

Approved Centre means that you can rest assured about

the excellent standard of training you will receive.

What qualifications do I need to take the course?None. As long as you are aged at least 16, and have a good level of English, you can take the course. Some placements require a degree, but most do not. Like any other job, the more qualifications and experience you have, the better placed you are to find work. Don’t worry if you don’t have a degree, there are still a lot of opportunities out there.

What does a TEFL certificate allow you to do and where can it be used? Our certificate is internationally recognised, so you can use it to find work all over the world. Most people use a TEFL certificate to go overseas, as they see it as an ideal way to earn money while travelling and experiencing a new way of life. There are a wide range of jobs available to our graduates – you could find work in private language institutions, state schools, summer schools, pre-schools, orphanages, big businesses and teaching in a one-to-one context

I keep reading about CELTA. What is it?CELTA courses usually run full-time over a month and cost in excess of £1,300. They are basically a much more advanced version of the courses we run. They are very intensive and most of the time are taken by people who have already taught overseas and plan on committing themselves to a life-long career in English teaching. Eventually you may think of doing a CELTA course, but we recommend that you don’t do this until you have taken a TEFL course and have gained some teaching experience.

Do I need to speak another language if I want to teach overseas? No, it may sound strange but you do not need to know the mother tongue of your students. This is because you will be teaching using immersion, that is, speaking completely in English for the entirety of your lessons. This method is used around the world and is thought to speed up the language learning process. Knowledge of the local language will help you however, especially outside of the classroom as you go about your day-to-day business. You can learn this as you go and many placements will offer you free language lessons as part of the package.

I’m nervous about committing myself to a long-term contract in a country I’ve never been to before. Is there a gentler introduction to TEFL teaching that requires less commitment?Yes, during the summer months a lot of short-term placements appear. You can also find ‘meet-ups’ – where you are expected to simply converse with students on a voluntary basis and help them improve their conversational English. Accommodation is usually included.

How many TEFL training hours do I need?We have thousands of job opportunities where all that is required is a 20-hour UK-TEFL Certificate. You may see some jobs advertised where the recruiters ask for a minimum of 100 hours training. If you want one of these positions then you can always complete a classroom course and then bump up your hours with some of our online training.

How am I assessed? For our classroom courses you will be assessed on your teaching practices. They are very short and you have at least one practice before the real one so you feel more comfortable. You will be given all the help you need by our highly experienced trainers to guide you through the course.

What is the difference between the courses you offer? We offer two classroom based courses and an online TEFL course. The standard classroom course is for beginners and the advanced classroom course is for people who have had previous experience teaching English as a foreign language or who have already taken the standard course and want to further their training. Our online TEFL course is a comprehensive 120-hour course which covers all aspects of TEFL. It is ideal for those who can’t attend our classroom courses and it also serves as a great complement to practical training. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with teaching English as foreign language training.

Can I get funding for my course? You may be able to get funding for your course. If you are in receipt of benefits then speak to your Job Centre Plus Advisor, who will be able to tell you if you are eligible.

How do I book a course?First of all you need to decide which course is appropriate for your level. Once you have done that, pick a date and location that is right for you. You can then upgrade with a UK-TEFL pack to boost your employability even further. Having completed the course, you can either start your search for a job or expand your skill set further by completing more training with UK-TEFL.

Am I too old to teach ? You have to be 16 or over to do a TEFL course, apart from that there are no age restrictions. Many people decide to do a course later on in life when looking for a career change.

What do I need to take on my course? Lunch isn’t included so you will need to bring your own, and don’t forget to bring a pen and notepad.
