T.E.A.C.H. and WAGE$ Symposium

Tracy Ehlert, former T.E.A.C.H. participant and in-home early educator appeared on a panel discussion at the National T.E.A.C.H. and WAGE$ Symposium in North Carolina on April 25th. The topic of the discussion was “Education is a Game Changer.” Tracy shared her journey of obtaining her CDA, Associate, and Bachelor’s degrees while on the T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship. She has gone on to finish her Master’s degree on her own, and is currently running for a seat in Iowa’s State House of Representatives. She feels there is a need for a champion in Iowa’s legislature who really understands the needs of young children and for high quality early education. We are proud of Tracy and all she continues to do for our youngest Iowans.

Lokoff Award Winner: Lorraine StraderCongratulations to Lorraine Strader from Allerton, Iowa for being selected as a winner of the Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children’s Tylenol National Childcare Teacher Award! This award is given to only 50 teachers in the United States annually. Lorraine is a full-time teacher of 2 year olds at Magical Beginnings Early Childhood Center in Corydon, IA. She is a past T.E.A.C.H. participant, earning her AA in Early Childhood Education from Indian Hills Community College in 2014. Lorraine is also a current WAGE$ recipient!

As a part of the application process, each applicant is asked to design a classroom enhancement project for the children they teach illustrating the educational, social, and emotional benefits of the project. A committee of early childhood educators and specialists review the applications. Award recipients receive $1,000 - $500 for the teacher’s personal use and $500 to implement the project. An award ceremony takes place each spring in Pennsylvania - hotel and transportation are provided for the recipients. The event celebrates the best and the most dedicated child care teachers.

Lorraine’s winning project centered on music. Last fall she took her classroom to watch the homecoming parade. The children loved the marching band and enjoy pretending to march and play instruments. Lorraine felt she could incorporate a wide variety of academic skills with a music project and named it Making Music Matter. With her winnings Lorraine has purchased several musical instruments for the classroom and is in the process of creating a musical activity backpack that children can take home and get their parents in on the fun as well.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to children throughout the years, Lorraine!
