What It IsEdiscio is an online flashcard creation tool with a ton of features. A teacher can build sets of flashcards by themselves, with a colleague, or with students. The flashcards can include links, images, videos, and other multimedia tools that might help students learn and remember the concepts. The schedule of learning is personalized according to his/her success with the flash cards, and students are provided with data about each “cardbox”. Ediscio also provides users with the ability to communicate and collaborate with others.

What It IsOur blog sites have been the “home base” for nearly every computer-based activity in our respective classes. If we have computers in class, the first phrase uttered is “Let’s go to the blog and ____“. Blogging provides students with access to important class links, video lessons, student work, embedded surveys, formative assessments, and more. We have been pleasantly surprised with the amount of quality writing that students showcase to an online audience. Creating and using a blog is easier than you think, too!

What It IsPrezi is a pretty cool online tool used for presentations (hence, the name "Prezi"). The creator starts with a blank canvas, and he/she can add and modify the content, its size, and the path of the presentation. Prezi separates itself from PowerPoint and other presentation tools with its creativity – there are so many possible tricks and turns a Prezi can take. It can be used by students and teachers, and there are many examples included below.

What It IsVoiceThread is an online presentation tool that features the presenter’s voice. Teachers and students can create new presentations and record their voices along with the slides that are there. One can upload existing PowerPoints to his/her VoiceThread account, and start to record audio on each slide. This ability to upload existing PowerPoints is especially useful since nearly every student learns how to use the software..

SMART Record

What It IsIf you have access to SMART Products, SMART Record is a great tool for recording your computer screen. Using SMART Record, you can record the actions you take on the interactive screen. If you connect a microphone to your computer, you can record your narration. The product is a .wmv file (playable on Windows Media Player) that is very small and easy to download and save, embed in a website/blog, or share through email. Here is a video on how to use SMART Record.

Vodcasting and Video Editing

What It IsVodcasts are video lessons that are available for students to see online, on iPods, DVD players, or anything else that plays a video. There are many computer software programs that one can use to edit video. Many of them look similar to each other, having the preview window, editing screen, and timeline. Windows Movie Maker is probably the most widespread, but we've also used Adobe Premiere and Camtasia Studio to edit videos. Often times, videos shot outside of class have been engaging for the students.

What It IsGoogle Docs and Spreadsheets have so many uses it’s hard to know where to start. Want to collaborate with other teachers on lesson plans? Make a new Google doc and share it with them. Want to have backups of your most important files and access them wherever there is an internet connection? Upload them to Google docs. Want to have students collaborate on a jigsaw activity? Upload the template and have groups modify it at the same time. Want to track student progress? Make a Google spreadsheet.. Want to make a presentation that students can access? Make a Google presentation and embed it on your website or blog, or just give them the link. Want to make a formative assessment or questionnaire? Make a Google Form and all of the answers will show up on a spreadsheet. You can even automatically grade the responses with a tool called “Flubaroo”. Google Docs and Spreadsheets have many uses, and Google continues to improve/modify what can be done to meet the user’s needs. This Google for Teachers e-book by Richard Byrne is a great guide of many teaching tools by Google.
