According to Gartner, worldwide devices, including shipments of PCs, tablets and mobile phones, are projected to reach 2.35 billion units in 2013, a 5.9% increase from 2012. The driving factor in the market is sales in tablets, smartphones, and ultramobiles, as PC shipments remain on the decline. However, growth in the tablet and smartphone markets are facing challenges as these devices gain longer life cycles. In addition, there has also been a shift from premium tablets to basic tablets, as evidenced by sales of the iPad Mini representing 60% of overall iOS tablet sales in the first quarter of 2013. The Ponemon Institute recently published its “Encryption in the Cloud” report, which summarizes findings of a survey of over 4,000 businesses and IT managers globally. Among the findings: approximately half of respondents indicated that their organizations transfer sensitive data to the cloud, 35% said their security posture decreased as a result of cloud adoption, and 44% believe their cloud provider is responsible for protecting data. In addition, there are significant discrepancies in the level of encryption being utilized by IT organizations and cloud providers. As infrastructure-as-a-service becomes an increasingly viable alternative for organizations globally, cloud security will continue to be an area attracting significant investment and scrutiny.
