TEENS& GOVERNMENT
INACTIONTeens and Government in Action is a 7-session
program for 7th - 11th graders. Planned for the
spring of 2014, this program will enable students
to learn first-hand about the role that youth can
play in the legistlative process.
The program includes 2 full-day field trips: one to
LA City Hall and one to the State Capital in
Sacramento. You must participate in all 7 events
to be a part of the program.
SESSION 1:What can youTH Do?Saturday, April 5 | 10:30am - 4:00pm Overview, introduction to the program
Getting to know each other
Introduction to government
Introduction to Los Angeles and role of city government
SESSION 2: Trip to L.A. City HallFriday, April 11 | 9:00am - 2:30pm See the inner workings of the City
Attend a City Council meeting
Meet with city officials and staff members
SESSION 3: Intro to State GovernmentSaturday, April 26 | 10:30am - 4:00pm Understand the different roles of City, County and State
governments
Discuss a number of current State bills
Choose one bill as a group, that you will focus on and
advocate for in Sacramento
SESSION 4: Understanding Our BillThursday, May 15 | 5:00pm - 8:00pm
Learn about the bill youve chosen and the argumentssupporting and opposing that bill
SESSIONS 5 & 6: Trip to SacramentoSaturday, May 17, | 11:00pm - Monday, May 19,

Teens and Government in Action Application

What is Teens and Government in Action?
Teens and Government in Action is a 7-session program that introduces youth to the role they can play
in the legislative process. Through T&G students will learn about the differences between city and state
government, how state bills get passed and become laws, and how youth can advocate for laws that
address issues facing them and their communities. Students will learn about different state bills on a
wide range of social issues, discuss those bills and select a bill that they want to advocate for when they
meet with their legislators in Sacramento.
Who should apply for Teens and Government in Action?
Teens in grades 7-11 who are interested in politics, social issues, government, public service, and/or
community involvement should apply to this program. No experience with these topics is necessary, just
a willingness to learn with an open mind, collaborate with a group of your peers, and share your ideas.
Teens who have previously participated in youTHink programming AND/OR are interested in becoming
part of next years group of youTHink Ambassadors are highly encouragedto apply.
How do I apply?
1) Go to teensandgovernment.eventbrite.com, complete the application, and submit it byMonday March 17 at 5pm
2) AND download the parent the parent/guardian consent form, complete it, get it signed, andscan and mail it to Julia Taylor [email protected]

What happens after I apply?
youTHink staff will review your application and contact you for a follow-up phone conversation.
Participants will be selected from these conversations and will be notified of our decision by March 28,
