What is Telemedicine?

• Information technology combined with audio-­‐visual communication to provide medical care from a remote location

Is Telemedicine New?• Einthoven (1906) ECG transmission over phone lines

• 1950 – Psychiatric consultation (Nebraska Psychiatric Institute and a state mental hospital.)

• 1960 –– Massachusetts General Hospital and ER at airports -­‐TV microwave link

– NASA and Lockheed used audiovisual technologies to create STARPAHC (Space Technology Applied to Rural Papago Advanced Health Care) – Papago Indian reservation in Arizona and Astronauts

– State – must have license to practice medicine in the state that the hospital is being monitored.

Goals of the Demonstration Project:• Does the application of this technology

• save lives?• Shorten ICU length of stay?• Shorten hospital length of stay?• Improve practice guideline

adherence?• Improve ICU throughput?

Tele-­‐ICU Outcomes

In Massachusetts -­‐ Tele-­‐ICU could save 350 additional lives, hospitals would make money and payers would

save $122 million
