Here is a new children's "book" I wrote. It is inspired by
Isaiah chapters 50 and 60, and in loving memory of Gracie.
Rabbi G
“Trusty”
Our dog is old, and can’t see anymore,
But he knows how to find the food and where to go to get hugged.
We love him and he trusts us.
Light helps us see where we are going.
But some people don’t know what direction they are heading, even in the sun light.
If you trust in God, you will have direction and find nourishment and love.
Even with the lights off!
Isaiah 50:10
Who among you fears the Lord
and obeys the word of his servant?
Let the one who walks in the dark,
who has no light,
trust in the name of the Lord
and rely on their God.
Isaiah 60:19-20
The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.

Matot-Masei—Numbers 30:2-36:13 The name of the for ty-second reading from the Torah is Mattot ,)מטות(which
means "tribes." The name is derived from the words of Numbers 30:1, which says, "Then Moses spoke to the heads of
the tribes of the sons of Israel." Numbers 30 discusses the laws of vows and oaths. Numbers 31 tells the story of Is-
rael's war with Midian. Numbers 32 relates the story of how the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Man-
naseh came to inherit the land east of the Jordan River. Except in biblical calendar leap years, Mattot is read together
with the subsequent Torah portion, Massei, on the same Sabbath. The last reading from the book of Numbers is
called Massei ,)מסעי(a word that means "journeys." It comes from the first verse of the reading, which begins with the
words "These are the journeys of the sons of Israel" (Numbers 33:1). Massei is the end of the continuous narrative of
Torah that began in Genesis with the creation of the universe. The narrative does not resume until the end of Deuter-
onomy, when Moses dies.
Devarim— Deuteromy1:1-3:22- The book of Deuteronomy is dominated by Moses' farewell address to the children
of Israel as he urges them to remain faithful to the covenant and prepares them for entering Canaan. During the course
of the book, Moses reviews the story of the giving of the Torah at Sinai and the trip to the Promised Land, reiterates
several laws of Torah and introduces new laws. The book seems to follow the general pattern of an ancient Near East-
ern covenant treaty document.
Va'etchanan—Deuteromy 3:23-7:11– The por tion completes the histor ical prologue of the Deuteronomy cove-
nant document and begins a rehearsal of the stipulations. Part of that rehearsal is a repetition of the Ten Command-
ments and the famous first passage of the Shema: Deuteronomy 6:4-9.
Ekev— Deuteromy 7:12-11:25- This portion of Deuteronomy speaks of the rewards that will come to Israel on the
heels of keeping God's covenant and commandments.
Re’eh- Deuteromy 11:26-16:17-You shall not hesitate to give, nor murmur when you do give; because you shall
know who is the good repayer of the hire. You shall not turn away from him that is in want, but you shall share all
things with your brother, and shall not say that they are your own; for if you are partakers in that which is immortal,
how much more in things which are mortal?
Torah Portions
I hope that everyone had been enjoying their summer so far. Even though it is summer and it tends to be a quiet time,
things have been busy at Temple Beth Hillel. We had our first board meeting with our new board where discussed the
direction for the new year for TBH. We talked about our need to address the deficit in our budget and planned for our
development committee to begin looking at ways to raise money to support our budget. We also discussed other com-
mittees that need members from the congregation including the Budget and Finance Committee that monitors and cre-
ates the budget, as well as the Religious Practices Committee and Social Action Committee.
We are all a part of the Temple Beth Hillel community and we are stronger the more we are all involved. If you are not
active with a particular committee, think about what you are able to give to our community to help us grow. Active in-
volvement leads a stronger community.

RELIGIOUS PRACTICES
RPC and Religious School Committees co-chaired a great pot luck dinner on 7/19. We are
encouraging ALL to attend services - it is perfectly fine to stay as long as is right for
you. That may mean being the last to leave after oneg, or it may be through candle light-
ing. Come and be part of our great community. Community multiplies joy and divides
grief. An active community is a true gift - and that is what TBH has!
RPC is working on the high holiday planning. Please email Deb Halpern
at [email protected] if you would like an honor - indicating which service you prefer
as well as Hebrew or English.
We would LOVE more members on our committee - please contact Deb at the email above
with any questions and to volunteer. We are all very busy people, the more volunteers that
we have the more that we can accomplish!
Next meeting is at TBH on August 13th at 6:30 PM.
This month, TBH members continue
our Hands On Hartford volunteerism by clean-
ing, preparing and packaging fruits and vegeta-
bles for the nonprofit’s community pantry. It’s
part of the organization’s Kitchen to Pan-
try initiative.
An enjoyable way to work alongside with fel-
low TBH members and serve the community
at the same time.
