Happy New Year and greetings in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!
I am delighted to announce that, after much praying and searching, God has answered our
prayer for a new Youth Minister. Please join me in welcoming Minister Anthony Borges to
our church family. We have lots of great things in store this year and we welcome your
ideas, suggestions, feedback and help in any way you feel called to use your gifts and be
involved.
As we start off this new year and revamping what Youth Ministry looks like at our church,
I ask for your patience and support as we walk this road together with Minister Borges and
get to know him. I also ask that you be ready to jump in and be involved in the many
opportunities that we will be offering throughout the year. If there is something we’re not
offering or ways you would like to be involved, please share your suggestions or ideas with
him.
Remember, “TOGETHER WE CAN”.
Your Humble Servant in Christ,
Pastor W. Clyde Pearson
Being called at an early age, Minister Borges testifies of how his life has undergone many growing
pains but the scriptures; 2 Timothy 4:22 “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season.
Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long suffering and teaching.” and, 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has
not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Both have been his
anchors of empowerment and wisdom throughout his Christian walk. Without question he has
learned to stir up the gift God has given him.
Since his licensing, Minister Borges has served in different ministerial capacities throughout the
years: Assistant Pastor over Youth at the Huntingdon Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD, Rev. Quay
T. Rich, Pastor and Assistant to the Pastor at the Good Shepherd Ministries, Rev. Philip Coram,
Pastor emeritus.
Recently, Minister Borges served as the Sr. Associate Minister to Pastor Damion M. Briggs at the
Eastern Community Church in Landover, MD. In this capacity, Minister Borges’ main responsibility
was to support the pastor’s vision and ensure that it was carried out. In addition, he taught the adult
Sunday school, singles ministry, directed the gospel choir, praise and worship ministry, and served as
Youth and Young Adult Ministry Leader. Minister Borges also served as Youth and Young Adult
President and then 4th Vice President of the National Capital Congress of Christian Education with
responsibility over the Youth and Young Adult Department and the Scholarship Committee. In
addition to youth ministry, Minister Borges has a passion for finance and educating churches about
its importance. This led to him taking on the role of Auditor for the National Capital Baptist
Convention of Washington, DC and Vicinity. Further, Minister Borges has had the opportunity to
preach extensively in the greater Baltimore/Washington and Northern Virginia areas, with travels to
North Carolina and New York City.
WELCOME
“The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor
riches to men of understanding, but time and chance happen to them all.”
Ecclesiastes 9:11
Minister Anthony J. Borges

Hurricane Matthew Outreach Project
On October 8th, Hurricane Matthew made its official landfall as a Category 1 hurricane with
75 miles per hour winds. Fayetteville, NC, picked up over eight inches of rain in six hours
on that morning. Over 14 inches of rain fall from this event. As you would expect, major
flooding materialized. At least 26 people died in North Carolina alone from the impacts left
behind by Hurricane Matthew. More than 4,000 people have been forced from their homes
into hastily assembled shelters at high schools and recreation centers. Many lack flood
insurance, health insurance or stable employment.
Deacon Oscar Hall contacted Pastor Cureton Johnson at First Baptist Church of Fayetteville
(his former church) to see how Hillcrest could be of assistance to some families who were in
need as a result of the flood damage to their home. Pastor Johnson provided him with the
names of organizations that we could assist and three individuals were identified.
Pastor Pearson asked the congregation to consider giving gift cards or monetary gifts to
present to the families that were affected. Hillcrest collected $2,400.00 in Wal-Mart gift
cards and checks. On November 17th, Deacon and Mrs. Hall delivered the contributions to
each organization personally. While there, they also traveled to Lumberton, NC, 32 miles
south of Fayetteville to observe the aftermath of flood damaged. It was devastating. Entire
neighborhoods were evacuated due to extensive water damage. Deacon Hall spoke with
people who did not know where they were going to live or what to do going forward.
Please keep the people in this area in your prayers and that God will alleviate their suffering.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God”. Philippians 4:6 (ESV). You are cordially invited to join
the Hillcrest Baptist Church (HBC) Women’s weekly Prayer Line led by Sister Yatana Walker.
Every Tuesday morning at 7:00 am and Thursday evening at 8:30 pm, connect with sisters across
HBC via teleconference by dialing (218) 339-7800 and entering access code 9640677; to pray for
each other, our church family, people in our community, and across this vast world. Bring cares,
concerns and praise reports to the virtual alter as we ask and thank God for His grace and mercy.
Paul writes to Timothy in 1Timothy, 2:1(ESV) “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all people.”
We know that God already knows everything about us. Nonetheless, our Father loves for His
daughters to talk to Him about our challenges and intercede on behalf of others, always being
thankful for what He has done and all He has in store. Prayer invites God’s presence. There is
nothing too big or too small to bring to God’s attention. Even if you are not comfortable with
praying out loud, this is the perfect place to share concerns, joys and heartaches, knowing that many
are praying on your behalf.
Anyone may submit prayer requests through the HBC website at http://hbcmd.org/#/prayer, by
calling into the prayer line, or simply asking the Women’s Ministry to be added to the prayer list.
We consider it a privilege to pray with you and for you. As we enter this new year, our prayer is that
the Prayer Line ministry will grow in love and unity and that you will be led to connect on Tuesday
mornings and Thursday evenings. “And this is the confidence that we have in approaching God, that
if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever
we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him.” 1 John 5:14-15 (ESV)

DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST?
If you believe in your heart that Jesus Is Lord, the
Christ, the Savior, the Son of the Living God, and you
are willing to turn from sin to God, then receive Jesus
Christ now by faith and pray this prayer:
“Oh, God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross for me. I believe His shed blood paid the price for my sin, and that His death, burial, and resurrection were all for me. I now receive Him as my personal Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving me of my sins and for the gifts of salvation and eternal life. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.” Take God at His Word and claim His gift of salvation.
Remember, it’s God who does the saving—not your
good works, not your family pedigree, and not your
church. Believe and you will be saved.

CHRISTMAS CANTATA
The book-at-a-time Bible reading plan provides two readings for each day. The first reading alternates
between Old and New Testament books, giving you three or four chapters a day. The Gospels are spread
throughout the year. The second reading takes you through a chapter or so of the wisdom literature and
Isaiah. Combined, these readings will take you through the entire Bible in one year.
To prevent the frustration of falling behind and to provide some reflection time, each month consists of
only 25 readings. You’ll have several days each month to meditate more deeply on something that was
significant to you in the past week, to catch up on missed readings, or to revisit favorite passages.
