Zach is the son of Daren and Angie Cecil of Piqua. He has two sisters, Maria Wysong (Bryan) and Kate

Roberts (Kevin), and one niece and three nephews who adore him. He is a lifelong member of St Mary

Parish where he attended Piqua Catholic and graduated from Lehman Catholic High School in 2010. He

began his formation at Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary in Indianapolis where he attended Marian

University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Catholic Studies and minored in Business Admini-

stration in May of 2014. He then continued his studies at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati.

He will graduate this May with a Masters in Biblical Studies and a Masters of Divinity.

Zach is very excited for his upcoming ordination with his brother deacons and appreciates all the support

and prayers he has received through the years from the Piqua Parishes and will continue to keep every-

one in his prayers.

A Note From Jim Niswonger:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I would like to thank everyone for all of the love and support given to me during the

recent loss of my Grandmother. As many of you know, she was like my Mom and it is a

deep felt loss. I am truly grateful for all of you.

Due to the loss of my Grandmother and unforeseen circumstances, my upcoming

ordination to the diaconate has been rescheduled for April 2020. I was scheduled to start

a 5-day retreat, required by canon law prior to ordination, on the very day my Grand-

mother passed. I did not make this retreat. Due to conflicts that arose in rescheduling

this retreat prior to ordination this year, it was determined the best course of action at this

time is to reschedule for next year. I have completed all academic requirements as of this semester.

I will continue in my current ministries, as well as, mentoring with Father Dan and Deacon Mike.

Thank you for the love and support. Please pray for me as I will continue to pray for all of you.

Yours in Christ, ~Jim Niswonger

St. Mary Altar Society:

St. Mary Altar Society recently had a very successful dessert sale at one of the Friday Fish Fries. We are

currently making plans for hosting the upcoming Combination Dinner with St. Boniface and St Mary

ladies. This will be held on Tuesday, May 14. Watch the bulletin for further details. Our ladies will also

be in charge of the Cake Booth at the Parish Festival,

which will be held May 31 through June 2. Our parish

has many talented bakers. So be sure to stop in and

check out our booth at the festival.

Adult Faith Formation Commission:

Lent: Members of the Adult Faith Formation are

assisting in leading Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm

Thursday evenings at St. Mary and 5:00pm Friday

evenings at St. Boniface.

Sponsored by the University of Dayton Marian

Library/International Marian Research Institute, a

half-day presentation held on March 16 featured

Gloria Dodd, Doctor of Sacred Theology.

A Gospel Bible study, using the book Luke: The Good News of God’s Mercy by Kevin Perrotta, was held at

different locations, hosted and led by parishioners from both parishes.

St. Joseph Table: In honor of St. Joseph the Worker (May 1), parishioners are asked to donate nonperish-

able food items for the Bethany Center food pantry at all Masses April 27 and 28.

Pentecost (June 9th): Parishioners can remember their Confirmation by wearing a nametag with their

Confirmation name on it. Red balloons will be given to children after Masses.

Anyone interested in being a part of this commission is welcome. Questions concerning any of our

activities, please contact Barb Kohl (773-9205 or [email protected]).

Welcome to Christ Renews His Parish:

Women’s and Men’s Teams are now in formation for the next CRHP retreats in the fall

of 2019. This is a program of personal renewal for parishioners led by parishioners. For

more information or questions, please contact for Women: Julie Tyler (937-214-1028)

and for Men: Dana Decknadel (937-214-0681).

St. B./St. M. Mission Committee:

The Mission Committee had a meeting on March 25. Our parishioners who traveled to Dominica gave a

presentation of their trip. It was outstanding!

Spring began March 20, and we will be starting to talk

about the Rummage Sale, which will be July 13 & 14. We

are hoping that more people will be willing to help set up

and move items for us. We need some able-bodied people

that can lift heavy items and lots of young people to

help. Donations for the sale can be dropped off at Piqua

Store ’N Lock, 450 Garbry Road, or contact Don

Stonerock, 773-2400, to have them picked-up. Please no clothing, baby furniture,

car seats, CRT-TVs, or mattresses.

Mission Committee Continued: We are selling desserts at the last Fish Fry. The desserts are very good and a

nice way to end the fish fry meal. We are grateful for the support we get from everyone.

We would like for people to come to our meetings and see if the Mission Committee is what you are looking

for. Our meetings only last one hour and they are at 6:00 p.m. They are always on Mondays and they are not

every month.

St. Mary Lenten Fish Fries:

Jenny Fink, a fourth grade teacher at St. Mary School,

began the first Lenten Fish Fries in the school cafeteria

in 1987 with a core group of parents and other volun-

teers. “She had a brainstorm to provide a great meal and

a place for parish and community members to get

together,” said Gretchen Roeth, one of the original

volunteers. “Her enthusiasm and energy got everything

rolling,” said Bob Hartings, another volunteer.

“We used a family tartar sauce recipe from the Scott

family and asked Bill Caserta to make all of the cole

slaw for us,” they added. “Jenny ordered the fish which

we battered with another Scott family breading recipe.

Adding French fries and applesauce to the meal, and we

were set to go,” continued the duo.

“We were working in the old cafeteria of St. Mary

School initially until the school (now Piqua Catholic)

was remodeled, and a new kitchen and cafeteria were

opened in 1994. In the initial years, we served about

200 people. Today in our 32nd year of sponsoring the

Fish Fries, the number has grown to well over 350,”

they said.

Mitch and Angie Hohlbein, current chairpersons of the

event, order all of the food and organize volunteers and

other co-chairs who help with the 6 week Lenten Fish

Fries. “We now offer both breaded and baked fish along

with macaroni and cheese or fries and applesauce or

cole slaw,” Hohlbein said. “We also have home-made

desserts available that are sold by various parish groups

as their fundraisers.”

“Fish Fries would not be possible without the many,

many volunteers and people behind the scenes who

help,” said the Hohlbeins. “This event is a great time for

parish and community members to enjoy some great

food and have a chance to get together.”

The last of this years Lenten Fish Fries will take place on April 5 & 12, from 5-7 p.m. in the cafeteria of

Piqua Catholic School. Special pricing is available for children and senior citizens. Carry-outs are also

available for those that wish to take their meals home.

* Remember the four simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred- forgive. 2. Free your mind from worries- most never happen. 3. Give more and expect less. 4. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

* Prayer for the end of the day . . . The busy world is hushed and the fever of life is over and our work is done. In thy mercy, Lord, grant us a safe lodging and a holy rest and peace at the last…

* When I stand before God At the end of my life, I would hope that I would have Not a single bit of talent left And could say… I used everything You gave me.

Feature Story: INVITATION TO A 30 DAY TRIAL

How rare it must be to receive the calling to become a Trappist monk!

Thomas Merton, author of the Seven Storey Mountain, shares his jour-

ney from worldly academic to fervent convert of Catholicism and

finally to undertaking the rigorous vows of the Cistercian Order at Our

Lady of Gethsemani Monastery near Frankfurt, Kentucky.

The distinctive precept of the Order is to minimize conversation

because it disturbs a disciple’s quietude and receptivity tempting one to

exercise their own will instead of the will of God. Speech that leads to

unkind amusement or laughter is considered evil and forbidden. They

even developed a monastic sign language in order to minimize conver-

sation.

As a contemplative, Thomas discovers a tremendous truth, “The

church, the court of the Queen of Heaven, is the real capital of the

country in which we are living. This is the center of all the vitality that

is in America. This is the Cause and reason why the nation is holding

together. These men, (the monks), hidden in the anonymity of the choir

and white cowls are doing for their land what no army, no congress, no

president could ever do as such: they are winning for it the grace and

the protection and the friendship of God.”

In this troubled time in our world, we as lay people have the tremendous opportunity to change outcomes and

join the prayers of the monks, by committing to sharing a contemplative hour in our beautiful St. Clare

Chapel. The perpetual exposition of our Eucharistic Lord should be in an atmosphere of reverence and

silence. There we can pray for our country, the conversion of souls, and miracles within our own sphere. It is

open 24/7 to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. One compelling experience happened when a woman

witnessed an appearance by the Blessed Mother, which led to her conversion and joining the Church.

It has been 28 years since a young fired-up priest from New York visited our parishes and motivated adorers

to come forward and commit to one hour per week in order to change our world. As many faithful adorers

have gone on to their heavenly reward we find ourselves needing new guardians to cover the hours. You are

invited to a 30 day trial offer to become an adorer. We think that you will find that it has become one of the

most important things that you can do to make a difference in your faith and in the fate of the world.

Please contact Ann Bradl at 329-0897 or Mary Jane Karn at 778-0496 to

schedule your hour. In this hour of solitude and contemplation, we can

discover as Thomas did that “Our vocation is not simply to be, but to work

together with God in the creation of our own life, our own identity, our own

destiny…To work out our identity in God.”

Recently Father Dan requested articles highlight-

ing the need for more volunteers to become involved in the various

parishes’ activities. This is the third article in an

ongoing series which will give information about some of the wonderful opportuni-ties available to enrich our faith and to support our parish families through

volunteerism.

Our Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration History

1990: The idea of setting aside a chapel for continuous adoration of Jesus

started in May. Under the leadership of Fr. Angelo Caserta and with the

guidance of the Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament, Perpetual Eucharistic

Adoration was begun in St. Clare’s Chapel. On December 1, a Mass in

St. Boniface Church was followed by a procession with the Eucharist to

St. Clare Chapel

“Our Lord said he would remain with us always—and he’s keeping that promise,” Father Caserta observed.

TENDING THE MASTER’S V INEYARD P AGE 7

Our Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration History Continued:

2010: Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr offered the Mass on October 31 in celebration of the 20th Anniversary.

At the end of Mass, the Archbishop carried the Eucharist and lead the procession from the Church to the

Chapel to enthrone the Lord once more for the faithful to adore. “There our Lord remains, always welcom-

ing all who seek Him, 20 years later,” said Fr. Angelo Caserta.

In the following week, Fr. Larry Villone, Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament, conducted a Eucharistic

conference His topics included “Why Do We Have To Pray?” and “Is Pride Becoming An Obstacle To Your

Spiritual Growth?”

2015: During Lent, Fr. Villone spoke on the importance of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, commended our

parishes for the 25 years of perpetual adoration, and encouraged parishioners to consider signing up for an

hour of adoration. As a result, over 60 new individuals volunteered to help with Eucharistic Adoration.

2017: In a effort to recruit adorers, Fr. Villone spoke at all the Masses on November 4 & 5. He asked us to

consider sacrificing of ourselves one hour a week and become part of the great blessings.

In the inspiring book, 21 Ways to Worship, best-selling author, Vinny Flynn, shares his

favorite ways to pray in Eucharistic Adoration. Written in the author's personal, conversa-

tional style, complete with puns and other bits of humor, 21 Ways to Worship is an easy to

read, practical guide, jam-packed with inspiring ideas, techniques, and prayers to help you

make the most of your Holy Hour. It's a perfect resource for the beginner wondering what

Adoration is all about and for the veteran adorer looking for additional ideas.

“I find that each chapter helps us to understand and inspires us to

be the best we can be and the way God wants us to be, being with

Him in our Eucharistic Adoration. I am very impressed by his

inspirational words; they are a true spiritual comfort!”

Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, EWTN Host and author of many books: “You’re in for a treat! Vinny Flynn

takes us by the hand and guides us towards the Blessed Sacrament. ‘Don’t be afraid, come as you are’,

he seems to say, as he gently explains how to bare our souls to be truly present to Our Eucha-

ristic Lord. You’ll surely be motivated by the author’s enthusiasm! This is a terrific book-a real

gem-a brilliant tool to help deepen our prayer lives.”

Vinny Flynn, the best-selling author of Secrets of the Eucharist and Mercy’s Gaze., is the

Executive Director of MercySong Ministries of Healing.

“Chaplet of the Divine Mercy” *** Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8

There is a beautiful and simple devotion, which is available to Catholics and

non-Catholics alike, called the Divine Mercy. This tremendously powerful

devotion can do a world of good in a time when it is desperately needed. The

devotion was revealed to St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, when Jesus first

appeared to her on February 22, 1931. His appearances and instructions for the

Divine Mercy are chronicled in her Diary. A simple way to remember His

message is by remembering ABC:

Ask for His Mercy, prayerfully repenting of our sins and asking him to pour

His Mercy upon us and the world; Be merciful, letting mercy flow through

ourselves to others; Completely trust in Jesus, because the graces of His Mercy

are dependent upon our trust; The more we trust, the more we will receive.

These instructions apply to wherever we are in the liturgical year. The Divine

Mercy Chaplet is meant to be prayed year round.

In speaking to St. Faustina, Jesus spoke the most consoling words

concerning someone in critical condition. He said, “Whoever will recite the

Chaplet will receive great Mercy at the hour of death…or when they say this

Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the

dying person, not as a just Judge, but a Merciful Savior.”

Instructional pamphlets and prayer cards will be available in St. Boniface and

St. Mary vestibules on Palm Sunday and also in St. Clare’s Chapel. On April

28 at St. Mary, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 2:30 pm,

praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet together at 3:00 pm, followed by Benedic-

tion.

School News—PCS

Below are the highlights from January 2019 through March 2019. Our purpose is clear,

our efforts are making a difference, and our love for Jesus and one another is strong!

1. Strategic Planning Team- We’ve called on Mary Connors with Connors Davis

Company to lead our Strategic Planning Team in creating a roadmap for our future.

Mary follows an untraditional framework for strategic planning by keeping our goal list

short and the approach simple as to not confuse the process. This will be a rolling proc-

ess- as one priority/goal is completed, another can be added. We are excited for the

possibilities!

2. Teacher Training- Our teachers had the fourth and final professional training session for the 2018-2019

school year with the Ohio Writing Project team through Miami University, modeling ways in which we can

strengthen our own writing to be better teachers of writing. Our teachers were able to immediately take ideas

and strategies and implement them in their classrooms. We plan to partner with the OWP in the future. More

importantly, we continue to grow spiritually through the religious education Vocare program. We’ve also

been utilizing Formed.org as a faith strengthening tool and are strongly looking into a program through the

Archdiocese of Cincinnati called School of Faith. We need to be great at being examples of Jesus’ love to all

who surround it and those who don’t know it yet. Catholic Schools are the best evangelization resource we

have in our Church and Piqua Catholic School needs to do better and will do better. It starts with focusing on

our internal selves first; we must be on fire with Christ’s love for it to impact our students and families.

Please pray for all of us here at Piqua Catholic- that we may be led by God as we create disciples of His

Church.

3. Damascus Catholic Mission Campus- On January

31, 2019 Dan DeMatte, Author, and co-founder of

Damascus Catholic Mission Campus in Centerburg, OH

brought 14 of his missionaries to lead us in an evening of

fellowship and adoration. It was a beautiful evening en-

joyed by so many in attendance. We hope to have them

back soon! In February, the 5th through 8th graders from

our sister schools (Holy Angels, St. Patrick, and

Immaculate Conception) came together with us at

Lehman Catholic High School for a Middle School Rally

led by the missionaries of Damascus. It was a powerful

day with a message full of Jesus’ love consisting of

games, talks, team building, and adoration. We finished

the morning with a big pizza lunch with all in attendance.

4. Third Grade Reading Guarantee- We are excited

to announce that Mrs. Hoelscher’s entire 3rd grade class

PASSED the Third Grade Reading Guarantee State Test.

This is a great indicator that our primary teachers are

preparing our students for a strong academic future. This

is also a sign that the support of our parents, the most

vital piece to this academic framework, is alive and

strong.

Congratulations to all our 3rd graders!

off at both school campuses or in marked boxes at both churches.

Coming Soon: This summer we will be hosting Summer Fun Camps. These will be week-long themed

camps for children age 3 and up. Watch for more information on these.

Lehman Catholic High School will present its 41st

annual all-school musical – Into the Woods – on April 11,

12 and 13, 2019 at the school. The Thursday night

performance begins at 7 p.m.; the Friday and Saturday

performances are at 8 p.m.

With music by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James

Lapine, Into the Woods is a well-crafted quest fairy tale

interweaving Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and her

wolf, Jack and his beanstalk, the Princes Charming, Rapunzel, a Witch and two original characters – a Baker

and his Wife. Unable to have children as a result of the Witch’s spell, the Baker and his Wife encounter the

familiar characters as they roam the woods in an attempt to “have the curse reversed.” There appears to be a

happy ending, but in Act Two, an angry Giant terrorizes the kingdom, and the characters learn lessons about

life, survival, and how wishes don’t often come true without consequences.

Playing leading roles are . . .

The Student Crew is led by Student Director and Stage Manager Joe Ritze. Ella Gover is in charge of the

We are in the home stretch! Cavaliers in Action (Piqua Catholic's PTO) has been very busy since the first

of the year, and with only a few months left to go, we are trying to fit in as much as we can!

In February, Cavaliers in Action, along with Lehman Catholic High School, hosted our first Damascus

Day, where we welcomed the missionaries from the Damascus Catholic Youth Mission Campus. This

was a faith filled event that included St. Patrick School, Holy Angels School, and Immaculate Con-

ception School. The students sang, danced, played games, attended break-out sessions, and together

spread the word of Christ in a moving and powerful afternoon. Many of our students and those from

surrounding parishes have registered to spend a week this summer at the Damascus Youth Summer

Camp, where the mission there is to awaken, and empower the Catholic youth of today. For more

information about Catholic Youth Summer Camp you can check them out online at CYSC.COM.

Mark your calendars for May 2. We will again be having our 2nd Annual Piqua Catholic "Walk by

Faith" Walk-a-Thon in the Caserta Center parking lot beginning at 9am. The students will be taking

donations online and through their Walk-a-Thon packet for laps completed. They will have the

opportunity to have face painting done and even a Kona Ice truck will be stopping in for a treat! This

year, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Ted and Maruja Gutmann-Gonzalez, who are missionaries

in Chile. They have dedicated their lives in helping the people there. The region of Chile is a very poor

area, and the Gutmann-Gonzalez's have helped teach the people how to care for their environment by

farming, irrigation, raising bees, planting trees and growing organic crops. Maruja works with the

women of Chile, helping them to learn about improved nutrition, physical health and self esteem. We

are very excited to partner with the Gutmann-Gonzalez's and help support such a wonderful cause!

Friday, May 10 is PCS Night at the Dayton Dragons, 7pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling the

school office and are available to ALL . . . come out for a night of fun and support our school!

Watch the bulletin this summer for more events later this summer and early fall, and once again, thank

you for supporting Cavaliers in Action and Piqua Catholic School. Blessings, Cori Knapke

Faith, Family, Friendship—Twinning Team #3 Visits Dominica

Leaving Piqua’s –5 to 11 degree temperatures

behind, our journey began on Thursday, January 31,

with a flight from Columbus to Baltimore, then to

S a n J u a n , w h e r e w e s p e n t

the night.

On Friday, February 1, we flew from San Juan to

Dominica, where we were greeted at 1pm with flow-

ers from our Dominican friends and 80 degree tem-

peratures. We traveled an hour to Portsmouth, with

transportation throughout the week provided by our

friend, Sewo. Our home for the week was the Tres

Palmas Inn. Dinner at Cabrits, a restored fort and

garrison that sits on the top of the hill on the bay,

and attending Mass at St. John - St. Lewis Parish (at

the closing of its Revival) completed our first day.

.

We visited the Portsmouth Market on Saturday, February 2.

Ate breakfast at the Church Hall and took the Indian River

Tour, followed by lunch. In the evening, our Dominican

friends surprised us with a birthday party for Linda!

On Sunday, February 3, we attended Mass and the Parish

Picnic at Belle Hall Beach.

Monday, February 4 started early with breakfast at 7:30am.

Then, we were off to visit St. John’s Academy, St. John’s

Primary School, and the Social Center Pre-School—all be-

fore lunch. After lunch our visits continued at the Center

Where Adolescents Learn to Love & Serve (CALLS), and

the Home for the Aged.

Tuesday, February 5, included an Island Tour (Kalinago Territory, Emerald Pool, Roseau Old Market) and

shopping!

We visited the communities of Toucarie and

Capuchin on Wednesday, February 6. Following

dinner, we shared Closing Cultural Expressions

with our Dominican friends.

On Thursday, February 7, we left early (7am) for

the drive to the airport. Then flew from Dominica to

Antiqua to San Juan to Baltimore to Columbus,

arriving home in Piqua at about 2:00am!

Twinning Visit Continues

“I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to experience this first hand. I’ve learned the re-ality of twinning is both spiri-tual and physically helping where needed. This was very emotional for me. And I am SO EXCITED to continue the development and growth of the relationship between our youth!!”

“I feel blessed to get to know our Dominican friends within their own culture. They live such a

deep Catholic faith every day and have wonderful kind hearts, even with all of the devastation they have experienced! And, it was awesome to be adopted by little Avery! I am truly blessed to have gained so many new friends and love seeing our twinning circle grow!”

Tina: “Spending this week with our Twinning Family from St. John/St. Lewis Parish was humbling, spiritual, uplifting, enlightening, receiving, and giving God’s love and fun! Not to mention … just plain fun!”

Ron: “It was encouraging to see the progress they’ve made since the 2017 Hurricane Maria. The trip was not all missionary “work”. We also made time for some fun in the sun as well as getting to know the wonderful people of Dominica! I feel it was a very good mix!”

Twinning Visit Continued

TWINNING TIMELINE: Since 2014, St. Boniface and St. Mary Parishes have been involved in a Twin-

ning Covenant with St. John - St. Lewis Parish in Portsmouth, Dominica. Praying for one another, cultural

understanding of one another, and getting to know individuals on a one-on-one basis are tenants of the

program.

The team making the first visit in January, 2014, included Bob Hartings, John & Brenda Karpinski, Sr. Mary

Alice Haitcoat, Mark Pitsenbarger, and Marlene Henry. In October, 2014, members of St. John - St. Lewis

visited Piqua. Our Team #2 - - Jeannie Bates, Ron Curtis, Bob Hartings, Russell Kill, Judy Lohnes, and Jerry

Voisinet- - traveled to Dominica in January, 2016. Hurricane Maria postponed the Dominicans’ visit in

September, 2017, and it was rescheduled for May, 2018.

Lois: “I was impressed with the spirituality of our

Dominican friends. God is such a part of their

everyday lives.”

Bob: “It was most excit-

ing to see Melissa make a

Facetime connection

between the Dominican

youth and our Lehman youth. I was also glad to see that the church was in

pretty good order … the pews were in place and the hurricane proof plexi-

glass held up remarkable well! And the little ones are always the best part

… the little girl in this picture was so sweet … she asked me if I wanted to

sit with her when we visited her classroom at the St. Johns Academy.”

TWINNING PARTNER HISTORY: St. John - St. Lewis parish was

built in 1850. On November, 21, 2004, the parish was destroyed by an

earthquake. On August 18, 2017, the blessing of the new church took place

with Catholic communities in Piqua, Garden City, and New Jersey partici-

pating via a direct Facebook live feed. Many thanks to ALL who helped

to raise the funds, supplied the materials and labor, so that we could help

in providing the pews and the krinklglass windows for the new Church.

On Sunday, March 3, our nineteen candidates gathered for Mass at St. Mary Church in their light blue Holy

Spirit shirts. After a wonderful time of worship, we were off to the Transfiguration Center for Spiritual

Renewal on Calumet Road in Ludlow Falls.

Our leaders for the day were Theresa Miller, Mary Zimmerman, Paige Kreusch, Ethan Moores, Kirtsyn Lee,

and Calista Reese. Our sponsors who attended were Luke Earhart, Marlene Henry, Beth Fair, Jane LaLoge,

and Carol Johns. Our leaders and sponsors were full of faith and fun!

We experienced a play about the Christian Community of Rome circa AD 390. We created clay Spirit seals

and prayer flags, celebrating our Confirmation saints. We received letters of support from parents and parish

prayer partners and wrote affirmation notes to one another. We closed the day with adoration time and con-

fession. Thank you to all who assisted at the retreat including our firemen Mike and Cameron Foster and to

our lunch coordinators Sherry Evans, Jenny Brading, and Jill Trevino.
