Welcome tothe village directory

Hi everyone,

What a month it’s been, as I fi nished April’s magazine in early March it appeared that spring was in the air but then very but soon after the cold weather returned with a vengeance and we even had snow. As I write spring is again trying to break through, the sun is shining and it’s a beautilful day, hopefully this time it’s here to stay.

Eight years ago, when I started my fi rst magazine, my niece Sophie used to create “Kid’s Corner” for me, she was just 13 at the time and did a fantastic job. Now, having just celebrated her 21st birthday and about to graduate from University, she’s helping me out yet again. The two of us went along to the newly renovated King’s Head in Wye this month, where Sophie could get the lowdown on the changes to the pub and interview Celebrity Masterchef winner Liz McClarnon, the pub’s Food Ambassador. You’ll fi nd Sophie’s report in this month’s magazine on page18, and along with it on our “Seasonal Delights” page, Liz has very kindly provided us with one of her own recipes for you try at home. I hope you’ll enjoy reading Sophie’s contribution and possibly trying out Liz’s.

Enjoy!

~ Debbie

The Garden Shed

Spring is defi nitely springing, but going back to the March report and the snowdrops, a week later a little group of them showed their pretty heads in the lawn. What a treat. A lot of the spring bulbs that I planted came early, and I don’t understand why, considering the earlier snow we had and those heavy frosts, but once more Mother Nature rules. There was also a reasonable show of winter clematis too, even though it had only been planted last Spring. The fl owers were slightly smaller than anticipated and only one per branch, but perhaps they will increase with age. I’ve been checking out the Wisteria in the garden and haven’t spotted many of the plump fl ower buds at all, does this mean once more I shall have a diminished number of tassles? I followed the pruning instructions to the “t” but maybe I am being a little impatient. Trouble is I see all those gorgeous cottages with an abundance of wisteria tassles dancing in the Spring breeze (sigh), and I’m desperate to have the same in my garden. I think I was at the end of the line when patience was dished out.

The upper patio looked lovely with the crocus and primula, and the crocus have now been replaced with tete a tete. This is such a useful mini daff odil. Potted up in a pretty pot they make superb gifts. In pots, front of border, baskets, it seems to fi t in anywhere and looks especially good mixed with violets, or any of the smaller variety of fl owers. They even look good in rockeries. Mentioning violets. Beware. A few years back a friend gave me some violet seed, which I just sprinkled around a small area of the garden. I must admit they smell lovely when picked as a bunch and are good eating and look very pretty sugared on the top of cakes. (Take off the bloom and remove any green. Paint over with egg white then sprinkle with caster sugar and leave to dry). But they spread like wildfi re and unless removed quickly the roots go down quite a way and they become almost like a weed!!! So unless you particularly want a garden full of violets, take care.

Now where was I, Oh yes the top patio. So, now its decision time as to what to plant in the patio wall baskets. I think a complete change would be good this Summer, and am contemplating maybe a single geranium (or pelargonium), the ivy leaf type maybe L’Elegante with its beautiful pale pink fl owers and white edged leaf, twinned with some pale blue lobelia and either side a darker blue or even yellow viola. It my minds eye, that would look very pretty. I shall still grow my basket toms in my twin towered baskets that I have got on the patio. They seem to do well there. The seeds are in and up in the greenhouse, along with the mini cucumber that I like and just a few Moneymaker tomato. Foolishly I overloaded the greenhouse last year. Twice I have tried to grow aubergine and on both occasions were a total loss, so I shall forget about those! I keep reminding myself to grow just what we like, then there is no wastage of money, time or space! I have also done a tray of lettuce seeds to grow as mini salad leaves as I did last year. Once up thin them, (eat the thinnings), then let them grow on and pick and eat as you go. Obviously if you want you can plant some out, I do. Then when the tray is eaten you should fi nd that the lettuce in the garden is ready. Little Gem is a favorite as is Webbs Wonder.

The long tailed tits have taken up residence in both the bird boxes, and I’m sure there is twittering going on from the inside, so perhaps the eggs have hatched. Each year I am so surprised when these boxes are snapped up as they are situated right by the dustbin area, and there is a lot of noise when we put rubbish in the bin! We think that perhaps the birds that are nesting are the young from the previous year and are used to the clatter that goes on!!! Nothing much seems to be happening in the

robins box, but its early days yet – I shall keep you informed!

Out of room again and I didn’t even cover the vege patch. I shall keep that for next time.

Needless to say its coff ee and cake time, and it just so happens I have made a batch of Almond Danish Pastries. And one of those with coff ee ...Need I say more?

Open Day Will Score Highly with New and Experienced Golfers

Tenterden Golf Club is staging an open day on Sunday 12 May (10am to 5pm) with a range of activities designed to be fun and inspirational for both new and experienced golfers.

Through its GolfMark accreditation, the club participates in the nationwide “Get into golf” scheme and will be providing free introductory lessons to novices on 12 May. In addition, experienced golfers will be off ered free coaching.

Richard Silman, the club’s professional, said: “The open day is for all ages and we’re looking forward to meeting youngsters and adults who are thinking about taking up the game as well as golfers who live in the area and want to see what we have to off er.”

The club’s par 3 practice course will be available during the open day, entry to which will be free, and visitors will be invited to tour the main course in a chauff eur-driven buggy. Competitions for chipping, putting and bunker play will be run throughout the day and several holes on the club’s challenging main course will be reserved for those wanting to test their skill further.

Training equipment will be demonstrated, a club cleaning service provided, and refreshments served.

Newly off ered by Tenterden Golf Club is Trial Membership and Flexi-Membership. Trial Membership costs just £65 and is aimed at anyone wanting to try out the club’s course and other facilities. Flexi-Membership is a bargain at £90 a year and is for golfers who want to belong to a club, play in matches and offi cially keep their handicaps, but who have little spare time so can only play occasionally. Additionally, there are attractive Academy Membership and Family Membership packages.

Tenterden Golf Club is located in Woodchurch Road, Tenterden – it is a short distance from the town and there is plenty of free parking. For more information about the open day, phone 01580 763987.

From the outside the Kings Head appears like any other quaint, village pub, however upon entering, the pub’s unique charm soon becomes apparent. This beautiful old Victorian coaching house is almost unrecognisable following its recent, tasteful refurbishment. Despite its contemporary new look the pub still feels instantly homely and welcoming, boasting the traditional features desired of a cosy Kent pub, such as roaring open fi res, comfy arm-chairs and cosy nooks hidden throughout.

The inviting atmosphere was matched by the warm welcome we received from the pub’s landlords who proudly told us all about their plans for the pub. They expressed their passion and enthusiasm to create a vibrant, sociable environment which it is hoped will bring the community together. They are keen to involve as many local suppliers and businesses as possible in a bid to support the local community, further enhancing this sense of community spirit. Local people and businesses are celebrated in a collection of artistic photographs capturing the true essence of the Kent countryside, and taken personally by one of the pub’s landlords.

We were presented with an enticing menu which off ers a quirky twist on traditional ‘pub grub’ classics. You’ll fi nd something for everyone here, from a delicious cheese fondue, served with glazed ham and sourdough, a great dish for sharing, to Hot Chocolate with a twist, served in the form of a lollipop which is slowly disolved in a tall glass of warm milk. A diverse specials board is regularly updated to keep the menu fresh and exciting.

We were lucky enough to sample this month’s featured dish, a mouth-watering beef-wellington which is the exclusive recipe of none other than Celebrity Master-Chef Winner and Atomic Kitten member Liz McClarnon. We even had the pleasure of meeting Liz, the pub’s proud food ambassador, who admitted to enjoying regular retreats to the Kent countryside to visit her close friends at the Kings Head. Liz’s passion for cooking was clear as she fl itted in and out of kitchen to check the food was being prepared to her high standards.

Having sampled her food Liz joined us for a chat. We ask her about her love of cooking and she shared her dream of one day having a restaurant of her own in a rural area much like Kent. The next day she was rushing back to London in preparation for Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway with

Liz McClarnon with Gordon, Sharon, Scott and Mark, landlords of The Kings Head.

Atomic Kitten. Their involvement in The Big Reunion will keep her busy as the tour starts this month and will come to the O2 Arena on May 14th. We wished her luck with the tour and hope that Kent continues to provide a relaxing retreat from time to time.

Overall the delicious food, fantastic company and pleasant atmosphere made our evening at the Kings Head an extremely enjoyable experience and I look forward to returning again soon. Plans are well underway to provide accomodation too, so be sure to head down to the Kings Head to see what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Heat 1tbsp of olive oil in a small pan on a medium heat, add the garlic and shallot then cook for 1-2 minutes until soft and golden.

Add half of the parsley and port and boil until the liquid has reduced by half (this will look a little syrupy).

Use a saucer to cut out two circles of pastry and lay on a non-stick tray. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes.

Dissolve the stock cube in 1 ⁄2 pint of boiling water and add to the pan with the remaining port. Gently leave to simmer whilst preparing the rest of the dish.

Heat the butter in a small frying pan until just melted, add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper. Then cook gently until slightly soft in texture.

Once cooked add a drizzle of truffl e or other fl avoured oil and keep warm.

Place the remaining oil in a heavy ovenproof frying pan or skillet, heat until it’s just about to smoke. Next, add the beef, allowing it to sear for 1-2 minutes

Season with salt and pepper, then turn the fi llet over using a pair of tongs. Sear again for 1-2 minutes and season. Add

I learnt to crochet when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I was taught by an elderly neighbour one glorious, long-ago summer. We used to sit together on her swinging garden seat under a beautiful, scented white rose intertwined with honeysuckle. She patiently taught me the intricacies of winding the wool around the hook and pulling it through to create the stitches. We crocheted squares in a multitude of colours with her left-over scraps of real wool.

As the years have gone by, crochet has been something I’ve dipped in and out of. A shawl made whilst I was a student nurse in quiet moments on night duty, pram blankets for the babies and dolls blankets for my daughter. I even crocheted a tiny shawl with sewing cotton and a fi shing bait hook to drape across the bed in the doll’s house, as though its wearer had just tossed it aside and moved out of sight.

Recently however, I have begun to experiment more. The beauty of crochet is that, basically, you work with only one stitch: if you drop it, it is not the disaster that it is in knitting because it is instantly picked up again and, if you don’t like what you’ve done, it is so very easy to just undo it and try it again another way. I have also learnt more about how to follow patterns – again, there is an advantage over knitting because crochet patterns are often given in both written and chart form. If you can’t understand one, you can usually work out the meaning from the other.

I have an older friend who has spent many hours knitting the most beautiful jumpers and cardigans. The downside is that all the long hours of concentration have resulted in severe arthritis in her neck. I asked her if she had ever tried crochet and she replied that she hadn’t

because she had no desire to wear the end result. I introduced her to crocheting fl owers and she was hooked (!!!)

Now she has resumed her knitting in small doses just so that she can make tea cosies on which to arrange her crocheted fl owers!

Family Law The University

Challenge

In the latest of a series of articles about legal matters aff ecting the family, Nigel Clarke, Collaborative Solicitor, Resolution Trainer & Accredited Family Mediator from Johnson Clarke Solicitors & Kent Family Resolution writes:

At a time when many students are looking to enhance their career prospects by choosing to study for a University degree, they face an unenviable task.

Apart from the challenge of deciding which course, which University and where to live students (and parents) often face the daunting prospect of working out the best way of funding the cost.

Information on the internet can be confusing and sometimes it is diffi cult to work out the

best fi nancial options.

What are my choices? A combination of funding is available. Tuition fees for the year, now commonly £9000 per annum, are usually met through a loan taken by the student from Student Finance paid directly to the University. This loan is repaid by the student once they start earning, by paying 9% of their annual income above £21,000.

Maintenance loans are also available from Student Finance for those who qualify - up to £5500 outside London (£7675 London). Eligibility is means tested and based on the previous tax return for the student’s parent’s household income. These loans are repayable in the same way.

Separate funding is available through a Maintenance Grant, again based on the student’s parent’s household income. This

Page 25: Tenterden May 2013

25

Maintenance Grant is not repayable. If the household income exceeds £42,611 per annum no grant will be paid but for a student whose household income is £40,000 a grant of £540 would be paid. It is not uncommon for these grants to be overlooked.

Many universities off er Scholarships (indeed must do so for those that qualify if they are charging the maximum £9000 tuition fees) and bursaries (generally based on academic merit). Again these awards are not repayable.

How about funding the gap? Most students are likely to have an income shortfall, even once available loans and grants have been taken into account. This is when parental support is often necessary.

A recent report of the National Union of Students suggests the average yearly cost of being a student outside London is £8875. Even those fi gures probably do not take into account the reality of day to day living for many!

Meeting the shortfall can be a problem. In households where parents are separated any Maintenance payable for the benefi t of the children is not taken into account when assessing the student’s parent’s household income so there often scope to sort out some sensible fi nancial planning between the parents.

There may be a court order already in place providing for maintenance to be paid until the completion of full time tertiary education (to cover a fi rst degree course) but many orders only provide for maintenance until the end of full time secondary education.

With sensible planning, discussion and consultation students can often fi nd a way forward that is manageable, aff ordable and are able to fulfi l their dreams.

And in more diffi cult situations separated parents (and their adult children) often fi nd the family mediation process very helpful rather than the expense of a court application.

THE NEWS AT 10Del and Peeps sat down at a bar and stared up at the TV where the 10pm

news was coming on. The news crew were covering a story of a man on a ledge of a

large building preparing to jump.

Del looked at Peeps and said, ‘Do you think he‛ll jump?‛ Peeps says, ‘You know, I bet he will jump.‛ Del replied, ‘Well, I bet he won‛t.‛ Peeps placed a £20 note on the

bar and said ‘You‛re on!‛

Just as Del placed his money on the bar, the guy on the ledge did a swan dive off

the building falling to his death.

Del was very upset but willingly handed £20 to Peeps, saying, ‘Fair‛s fair. Here‛s your money.‛ Peeps replied, ‘I can‛t take

your money I saw this earlier on the 5pm news so I knew he would jump.‛

Del replied ‘I did too; but I didn‛t think he‛d do it again.‛ Peeps took the money!

IN A VACUUMDel and Peeps were playing Trivial

Nature. His question was:‘If you are in a vacuum and someone calls

your name, can you hear it?‛He thought for a while and then asked

‘Is it switched on or off?‛

And Finally...Del & Peeps were sitting on a park bench

enjoying the weather when Del turns to Peeps and says “Come on lets go, my backside is going to sleep.” Peeps says“ I know, I heard it snore three times.”

• Choose simple white bathroom fi ttings in standard sizes. Simply use tiles, taps and accessories to create an elegant and upmarket eff ect. Remember that not all whites are quite the same shade however so make sure they match.

• Try www.gooddealdirectory.co.uk for factory shops, seconds shops and permanent discount outlets nationwide; for listings of shopping villages, outlet stores and factory shops, go to www.shoppingvillages.com.

• Plan carefully so that you avoid moving existing plumbing. By putting the bath, basin, WC, shower and any radiators in the same position you can keep installation costs down. The same applies to existing doors, windows and built-in features such as cupboards or radiators.

• DIY or GSI? If you do some of the work yourself, it will save money. Know your limitations, however. Tiling and painting are straightforward and even plastering or putting down fl ooring can be tackled by a competent DIYer. If in doubt, however, call someone in and, when it comes to electrics, remember that there are strict safety regulations controlling what work may be carried out by a non-professional. Search for a qualifi ed electrician at

www.eca.co.uk or www.niceic.com.

• Fitting a new shower? Know your water supply system and make sure you choose a shower that will work with it. If your water pressure is low, for example, you’ll need to choose a type that can cope with this; otherwise you’ll have to install a pump as well.

• A radiator that doubles as a towel rail will save you buying the two items separately, or simply attach a towel holder (such as a plain chrome pole from any DIY retailer) above your existing radiator.

• To avoid the labour cost of removing old tiles and re-plastering the wall, it is often possible to tile over the existing tiles.

• When putting in new tiles, save by only covering specifi c areas: perhaps up to half-height around the room, or else just the splash backs next to the bath and basin. Use paint everywhere else.

• Instead of pricey stone or marble wall or fl oor tiles, fi nd a look-alike made from ceramic or porcelain. They are widely available, attractive, stain-resistant, light (and therefore easy to lay) and should cost noticeably less than the real thing.

• If you love expensive mosaic tiles, limit them to small areas, or else combine them with plainer tiles as a border or insets.

• Rather than installing a blind or having your windows sandblasted, use glass etching spray or stick-on fi lm to ensure your privacy. These days, the latter comes in a wide range of patterns, from plain frosted to your own bespoke designs.

• Custom-built, fi tted storage can be expensive. Instead, choose standard-sized, off -the-peg units or else combine a simple set of shelves with free-standing storage such as trolleys, chests, cupboards or baskets.

Sit-in Private Care Service

Town & Country Homecare Limited, 102a High Street, Tenterden, Kent TN30 6HT www.townandcoutryhomecare.co.uk

For a free assessment of your care needs or to receive your brochure Call us on 01580 762244

Be it companionship or just someone to sit with a relative, our Private Care Service carers can come to your house and help. Visits can be for as little as one hour or as long as 15 hours. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed. We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.
