TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
Next Monday afternoon we will be holding an ANZAC Day commemoration at our
whole school assembly. Our school captains will lead this commemoration,
commencing shortly after 2.30pm. As part of this assembly, we will welcome local
author Anne Vize who, along with The Hon Mr Bruce Billson, will be presenting
our school with a copy of the book she has recently completed called The ANZAC
Resource Book for Dunkley Primary Schools. Parents are most welcome to join us
for this assembly. Our school captains, along with Davyn and Caleb have been
working on a poster to be displayed at the Frankston RSL
ANZAC Day commemorative service on Saturday. We are all
very proud of the work they have done, and it’s great that
Overport Primary School will be represented at this service.
NAPLAN testing for Year 3 and Year 5 students is coming up
soon. The tests will be held on Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th
and Thursday 14th May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in
Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and
Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, and
teachers which can be used to improve student achievement. All students are
expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests, however may be withdrawn from
NAPLAN by their parent or carer, only after consultation with the school. If, after
consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must contact your child’s
teacher, or Mrs Wendy Kilpatrick, who will provide you with a Student Withdrawal
form to sign. For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website
at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the National Assessment Program website at
www.nap.edu.au Results of these tests are sent out to schools towards the end of
Term 3. Please keep in mind that the results are a snapshot of your child’s
performance on the day of testing. Our teachers conduct ongoing assessment for
reporting purposes.
This week and next week all students in Yr 5 and 6 will be completing the Student
Attitudes to School survey. One of the ways our schools find out about areas
needing improvement is by collecting data from students. This survey covers many
areas: student learning, student safety, their connectedness to school, to name just a
few. The results of this survey give us an understanding of our own students
perceptions, as well how we compare to all other schools in the state. These will be
made known to schools during term 3 and presented to school council, assisting us
in making plans for future improvement.
Yesterday was our first group tour for Prep enrolments for 2016. It is fantastic to
see the interest shown in Overport PS, and it’s wonderful to be able to take these
visitors around the school to see the great things happening here. Further tours have
been arranged for later in the term, so if you know of anyone thinking of enrolling
for 2016, please remind them to contact the school office to book a place.
Unfortunately due to a staff professional development session, the education
subcommittee meeting which was scheduled for this afternoon has had to be
cancelled. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 21st May at 3.45pm in the
staffroom.I also remind school councillors that the meeting scheduled for Monday
27th April has been rescheduled for the following week; Monday 4th. May.

PRODUCTION NEWS
Wednesday 9th September 2015
We are very excited to announce that our pro-duction this year will be “Zalobardi” written by our very own, very talented Jane Lacey and Katie Bingham with musical numbers
composed by Anthony Bingham.
Zalobardi is the tropical island where a boat-load of tourists have just begun their holiday. As the tourists and sailors set out for a lunch feast at
neighbouring Mahala Bay, a little girl (Robin) is left behind. The glamorous queen of the jungle (Shirley Bird) and her friends direct Limbo (a monkey
infatuated with humans) to help Robin find her mum. Meanwhile, through swarms of bugs and butterflies,
dangerous swamp creatures and
hungry natives dancing around their fire, a hapless search party of sailors track the girl. Despite the best
interfering efforts of 3 cheeky
monkeys, and with the help of a talking totem pole, Robin and Limbo make their way through the jungle to be
safely reunited with her mum at
Mahala Bay.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S ARTICLE
Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
Term 2 has begun with a ‘bang’ with many exciting
things happening across the school. Some of which I am
fortunate to be part of. My name is Tess Higgins and I
am the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Coordinator
here at Overport Primary School.
If your child is in grade one you may have heard of the
CASEA program. The CASEA program is a program
run by Monash Health in conjunction with the
Department of Education and Overport Primary School.
The CASEA team, comprising of, Sarah, Janaki and
Davina have been working with members of our school
community since the beginning of the year. This term
will see the beginning of the group program with a
selection of parents and students. Stephen Pugh
(Department of Education) and I have the privilege of
working alongside the CASEA team with our parents
and students to enhance interpersonal and social skills,
problem solving and communication. This is a great
opportunity for our school community to work with
experts in the field to improve the wellbeing our
students.
The journey to the RACV Energy Breakthrough
competition for 2015 has begun. Mrs Alice Wynne and I
have received in excess of 20 expressions of interest
from students who wish to be involved in the push cart
teams for this year. During the week we will read the
letters and send home a letter of commitment to
families. The RACV Energy Breakthrough is a fantastic
program which, according to the students who competed
last year, was the highlight of the year. It does, however,
rely on the support of families as there are many
afterhours training sessions and families are required to
accompany their children to the event in Maryborough
in late November. This year we hope to enter two teams
of 8 students from years 4, 5 and 6.
Please remember that Every Day Counts. Going to
school every day is the single most important part of
your child’s education. Every day at school, your child
learns new things and is involved in important social
interactions with their peers. If you are having
attendance issues with your child please contact your
child’s classroom teacher so we can work together to
have your child here, on time, every day.

Extend OSHC at Overport Primary School Last week was a great
first week back. We
decided to get messy on the first day back and
we made some playdough which all the children
loved doing. The children got to have pikelets
with a difference as they were green, red and
yellow. Outside is always a must when the weather is
nice and as usual soccer was the game of
choice, and we ended the week making our
jester rattles with a twist.
